The Jaguars wasted the elite talent of their Wide Receiver Calvin Ridley. Sure, he had a decent year if you’re just looking at the numbers, but when diving into the film like we like to do, the Jags played him out of position, which completely ruined his ceiling. Ridley is a great speed, route running wide receiver, but the Jaguars forced him to face the third most press coverage in the NFL, and his high end potential was capped. Why did they do that? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 game film to analyze Jacksonville Jaguars Wide Receiver Calvin Ridley.

"Speed" is probably the most misunderstood concept by football fans. Most people will look to a guy's 40 time to discern whether or not a player is fast. This metric only informs a players acceleration from a dead stop. It does not measure the most important aspects of playing Speed. For example how quickly can someone throttle down? How much does a guy throttle down before making a cut? Can he cut at full throttle? What's a players terminal velocity or long Speed. All of these examples are far more useful metrics for evaluating play speed. It baffles me that as data becomes more ubiquitous modern scouting has not evolved to create more predictive measurements. Also fans who like to get more granular in the ways they understand the game would love new toys to play with.

As a Jags fan I attribute Calvin Ridleys wasted potential to be a number of things that was plaguing us. 1. TLaw and Ridley were constant on different pages 2. The Jags were notorious for big gains getting turn apart by penalties 3. Ridley had a decent drop issue. Not big but decent 4. Ridley would sometimes give up at the top of the Route. Leading to picks 5. TLaw constantly felt the need to play Hero ball because his offensive line was utter garbage. 6. Because the o line was so trash.... Ridleys route running tree was very limited to deep comebacks

I'm convinced the jaguars have been wasting talent everywhere. They have decent players on defense including what should be one of the better LB groups in the NFL yet their defense is slightly above average. This shows how they ruined using ridley and Lawrence took a step back. I think they got a new def coordinator and Brian Thomas JR may be a better fit than Ridley. Maybe they bounce back

Thank you for this. So many fans/fantasy players claimed Ridley was washed last year, but JAX did not use him correctly at all and he still got 1,000 yards, like you mentioned. Using him as the X negatively impacted his ability to perform. It’s no coincidence that his best games of the season are games in which Zay Jones was healthy and operating as the X.

Ridley contributed to more lost points due to drops more than any player in the NFL last year. EPA claims Lawrence lost 37.8 points(most in the league) from dropped balls from WRs, and thats with him not playing a full 17. Dude should've had a monster year if he could've held onto the ball.

Great video! I never knew about the differences between the "X" and the "Z" in regards to lining up on or off of the line, and regardless to preferred skill set and body type! Also, I do believe that the Jaguars may have blown their window last year, and that they wasted some elite talent. In addition to Calvin Ridley, they had an elite Running Back, an elite Tight End, and a receiver that had 1,000 yards the previous season (Christian Kirk). I was willing to argue that they had one of the best skill position groups in the league. Do you know how many teams would wish to have a group like that? They also had a 5-2 start that they squandered. The way that they handled Trevor Lawrence's injury during the last month of the season was horrible. But, who would you hold at fault for squandering this talent? Coach Pederson? The coordinators? The Lawrence injury, and the way that it was handled?

TLaw was awful last year for his standards. Ridley had a 4.4% drop rate, 6 on 136 targets. According to PFF, average drop rate among recievers with 52+ targets is 6.7%. Ridley was 33% better at catching than the average nfl receiver. Ridley also ranked 82nd in catchable targets, at 64.7%. When adjusted to compensate, his true adjusted catch rate is about 86%. Meaning if TLaw threw Ridley 10 *good* balls in a game he would come down with 8 or 9 of them.

“Out of position” you don’t know ball brother he dropped at least 9 passes 5 of which were tds. Position doesn’t correlate to on or off the ball. Ridley was running the wrong routes constantly too along with giving up on plays. Ridley wasted our time.

Kirk was 5'11, Zay Jones was 180 lbs and less talented...So who was the expecting to take on press coverage? Now that the Jags have BTJ. Ridley would have been able to be in a better role had he stayed. So what sold him with the Titans is that he could play that off the ball role and not have to worry about being pressed off the line as much.

@@AlexRollinsNFL He quit on his team not long after that. Then got suspended. Looks to me that Jax had less playmakers and they needed to use him on the line of scrimmage due to him being the best they had. Had he stayed in Atlanta perhaps he could have been the guy in his spot. he deserves some fault for his situation. Will Levis may not be the guy for him either this year. We'll see.

So basically Ridley never learned, nor cared to learn, how to beat press. For a receiver who doesn't like press, although I don't think any receiver does, a thousand yard is amazing.

@Sunshine4prez-kt8eb Not saying everyone wants or cares to be the best. But is that not embarrassing to be in the league that long a kids fresh out of college that have less speed and a similar built (Justin Jefferson) can beat press? Not shaming the guy. I’m just super surprised looking at this tape.

Well he would have had about 1300 yds and 12 tds if he didn't drop so many balls including about 3-4 tds I can think off the top of my head. Let's not act like the Jags got the same exact Ridley his first year back after missing two years he was deff rusty.

Stud, true #1 receivers could play on and off the ball. Rod Smith didn’t need motion or space to get open. He got open and fought for ever yard. That’s elite talent in action. Unfair comparison for Ridley, but he should aspire to greatness.
@BlGDaddyRob
@BlGDaddyRob 25 күн бұрын
Why would you take someone that can play well and force them to do something else? You don't take a Darren Sproles type RB and try to turn him into a 3 yards and a cloud of dust battering ram. You try to maximize what you have. One of the jaguars problems in this respect is that their TE Engram is barely a TE so hes not great at lining up on the line either. Basically their whole team is off the line type finesse players, which is why someone like Gabe is a sorely needed addition - someone who is both a deep threat but also a more physical player. Ridley probably should have been the one to play off the line though, he gives you the biggest upside from the guys we had when he wins.

@@BlGDaddyRob Not only are they finesse players but they were saved by consistently good scheming which explains the pass production in 2022. Because Pederson was the play caller in all those games. 2023 was a huge change because despite that success, Dougie P handed those play calling duties to his OC Press Taylor. But as you noted balance and different athletes help expand good schemes so Gabe Davis despite his inconsistencies as well as rookie Brian Thomas Jr are a welcome addition. If only Doug would take play calling reins back in 2024.

@@t4d0W Taylor called the second half of games in 2022 as well. People act like he wasn't already calling half the plays the previous year, or the first half of the year when we were 8-3, on the road to 9-3 when Trevor got injured.

2022 offense was play called by Doug P. 2023 offense was play called by his OC Press Taylor. He also did this during his time with the Eagles. Pederson's big flaw is that he gets too cute with offensive continuity by not choosing to do what he does best.
