How To Water Your Bonsai In The Summer; there is more to watering than you might at first realise!
Most enthusiasts know to wait until the soil surface of the tree has begun to dry before then watering the tree thoroughly, until water appears through the drainholes at the base of the pot.
This video explores how to ensure that the tree has enough moisture at its roots for longer during the heat of the Summer, with a few simple tricks and changes in technique.
If you enjoy this video and would like to see more, please Subscribe, Like and let me know!
My bonsai books Bonsai Inspirations I and Bonsai Inspirations 2 describe these techniques in much greater detail than is possible on video and are available from bonsai4me.com/shop/#!/B4MePubl...

Hi Harry, great video. I'd be very interested in a video showing how you've set up your water butt and pump system for watering.
@bonsai4me2
@bonsai4me2 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll try to do that, it’s fairly simple tho. Hozelock waterbutt pump dropped into whatever container you use to hold water, has enough pressure to run the full length of my garden and back again. Surprisingly cheap for what it is as well

@@bonsai4me2 Thanks for the reply Harry. I use a Hozelock watering system foe when I'm away and it works OK if I have no alternative, ie someone to do it properly. I'll have a look at their pumps. Cheers.

I envy your garden, such perfect semi shade. My hornbeams go crispy and larch get long straggly needles due to the constant sun exposure.

It's all about the water! That's really like the core of keeping bonsai (and any garden) alive. I'm still trying to figure out how to keep the bonsai alive when I go away on trips. It's really a conundrum.

What has worked for me is this. Place them in large trays no higher that half the height of the pot and fill the tray with water. If it does rain the water will overflow and not drown your trees. I use overflow trays meant for under use home washing machines available at big box stores. With these you can fit several trees in a tray. Put the setup in the shade if possible. I’ve used this method for several weeks with much success. Good luck, keep growing
@bonsai4me2

@@mattbrennan647 that’s not a bad call for smaller collections, although I wouldn’t do it for longer than 3-4 days. Ultimately some kind of automatic watering system needs putting in place. They are more reliable than well meaning friends and relatives!

So good Harry! It’s good to have you back! It would be great to see the works for this year on the Common Hawthorn, to be able to follow the progress of the tree you show us on the Bonsai Empire deciduous course :)

good to see you posting again Harrry, I followed your advice on my Turkey oak and have already seen new buds at the end of the branches, a potential extension to the growth that has been static for the last few years. I've also started this year on the air layer of the field elm that I collected a few years back with the significant shari to get a better base, we messaged about it a few years back now and it is a long process but I'm following your advice, it followed the carving video of an elm that you did. If it is successful (and I am sure it will be as new roots are showing already) then I'll let it grow a further year and 2024 will see the awful branch structure cut right back and a complete regrow of the branch structure begins. I've really been challenged by this tree, my impatience has often been challenged but that is why I do this. I'm sure I will reach out again for help at some point but so far your videos have helped me greatly

First-the shrubby honeysuckle bonsai has got to be one of my favorites in your collection. Second-last summer I encountered leaf yellowing on my American Hornbeam. Is that from overwatering? It might be too difficult to know but it’s perplexing to me
@bonsai4me2
@bonsai4me2 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yellowing is typically something that happens as an indirect result of a lack of aeration in the soil, that leads to too much water being held in the soil. Aka “overwatering”. That can then lead to deficiencies that lead to the yellowing. Try carefully opening the soil up a little with a chopstick and feed with seaweed/kelp

At the moment I'm only able to use tap water Harry, I know you've not recommended it in this video but will it suffice for now?
@bonsai4me2
@bonsai4me2 2 жыл бұрын
I used hard tap water for nearly 20 years before being able to switch over Alex. It will suffice, but you do give your trees an advantage with rainwater, when the opportunity comes along

If you use the correct soil u can't overwater your bonsai, so like me i just water them and soak the mix (it all runs out a little after). Therefore i can go without watering a couple of days without any harm instead of watering twice a day

I’d worry if my trees didn’t require watering for a couple of days in the summer. That’s a bad recipe for all kinds of trouble!!!

@@bonsai4me2 No i always check top soil for water, ive had no problems at all but it depends on the soil mixture. But i water it if it gets too dry :), some trees like pines and juniper needs it very dry. But of course i live in a totally different place (Denmark) where there could be more humitity idk :)
