Tricia Cusden - Look Fabulous Forever

Tricia Cusden - Look Fabulous Forever

Күн бұрын

In the past colour has been a contentious subject when worn by older women. For our grandmothers and maybe for our mothers too, there was an expectation that clothes, makeup and hair would be toned down with the advancing years. However, as a generation we are ageing very differently because we now expect, with some care and some luck, to survive well into our 80s and 90s.
Since starting Look Fabulous Forever I have been amazed at times at negative comments about red lips on an older face, or grey hair worn long or clothes in bright colours. In today’s video I explore the pressures to embrace ‘ageless’ style when we are older whilst still navigating the shark infested waters of still looking ‘age appropriate’.

Great video! You really dissected this issue of ageism for women so brilliantly. The expectations of how an older woman should dress and present herself are really just a continuation of the control of women's identity and behaviour that starts in childhood and goes on through our entire lives. While at 20 we're expected to flaunt our 'assets', by our 50s and beyond we're expected to fade 'gracefully' into the background. None of these cookie-cutter moulds that we are presented with allow for the expression of our true selves without which our lives become just an empty charade.

Once again , really enjoyed your presentation. First thing I noticed, like on of your other admirers, was your cushions. You and I have similar decor, white shutters, purples and lime greens etc and it was your positioning of the cushions that caught my eye. You just looked perfect in your ensemble, which demonstrates everything you said. Loved your blouse, colours are terrific and everything blends. Generally I find cool ladies, grey beautifully, for the first time in my life, I am wearing my hair longer.....not long long....it’s just touching my shoulders. Being warm toned and blandish hair colouring, I now look as if I have low/high lights in my hair. Overall colour brownish , with greyish blonde lights. Strange. I would love to have had hair that greyed like yours!!! And as for the dowdy , matronly look, none of us should go with that style, today. We can and have every opportunity, to look good in our skins and should try and enjoy these years ahead of us. My age, 74 , once lock down is over and if it is safe out there, I do hope to return to work for my two days a week.....God willing. Thank you Tricia for these very enjoyable afternoons for tea at the Ritz.!

I love your makeup and choice of colourful clothing, nobody should want to just fade away into the background. Sometimes I think other women are our worst enemy, with their negative comments and too many can't do this or that. My hair is salt and pepper and at first I got a few withering looks and mutterings of letting myself go, but for me it's been more of letting myself free. Now I get so many compliments about my hair colour and I fully intend to keep bright and beautiful and I have finally learnt how to be comfortable in my own skin.

Having been retired two years from a university vice presidency, I mostly am leaving dark colors behind, except, like you, I am comfortable in the dark uniform of trousers. Color has entered my life, instead, in the form of wildly colored flats and handbags, sweaters with interesting details and colors, and bright makeup. Now, sheltering at home, I’m finding my increasing amount of white bangs to be quite attractive, too. I enjoy this age and choose not to put a number to it . Jill

What a wonderful, uplifting video Tricia. Loving your new blouse. I let my grey through about 6 years ago now and my youngest son wasn’t happy about me doing so but I told him it was my choice. I am so pleased I did because as you say it suits me because my colouring has changed. I’m not one to wear lots of bright colours but I’ve taken this video to heart and when I do get out into the big wide spaces again I will be buying much brighter coloured outfits. Thank you 💕

How well I remember the Coronation - had a beautiful yellow dress, new shoes, etc. - unfortunately, had yellow jaundice too! Thus began my life long aversion to yellow!! Couldn't agree more on what you said about the Queen - I don't remember a time without her, and she definitely defines the meaning of steadfast, dutiful, loving service to her country. Can't imagine what that must be like - and how difficult is has been also. Adore her and love the way she is dressing these days!

Agree with all you say......….I always wear colours - my daughter refers to some of my friends as black crows (!) and encourages me to stay colourful.....like many am confused with warm or cool so looking forward to our session on that subject and hopefully I will finally know which I am!

Agree wholehearted with your comments on the Queen.. I love colour. I have worn a bright lipstick all my life because I look better than in a pale colour, I once went out in a very pale pink lipstick, and bumped into a friend, who immediately asked if I was ok, she said I didn't look well. It was the lipstick, never again have I worn a pale colour, and never again have I been asked about my health. As for my hair, I like the colour, I am not pressured by anyone to keep colouring it, I do it for me, maybe one day I will be ready to go natural, but I am not there yet. I feel my choice of clothes is also stylish, colourful, and appropriate for my age, in fact my daughter usually raids my wardrobe when she comes to visit, so they must be ageless. Thank you Tricia for another informative Teatime at the Ritz.

Love it - so articulate, insightful and wise - and encouraging! I'm letting my hair go natural with the lock-down after years of dying it - I have slight trepidation!! But I like you am a real fan of colour - it is just so cheerful - scarves and accessories are such an addition and make so much difference. Thanks Tricia you're an inspiration!

Keep it up Trisha, I find that if people make negative comments it says far more about them than you. As my mother used to say if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all. This is the problem with social media, would the people who make negative comments say those things directly to your face I think not. With regard to colour, bring it on, I’m a great believer in wearing colour and since I had my colours done in the 1990s, now wear colours that suit me. I only wish I’d known about colours when I was younger, but I have embraced it and I’ve lost count of the compliments about how well I look. Look forward to tea at the Ritz daily.

I love the blouse: it is gorgeous. I totally agree with your comments about colourful dressing: I had my colours analysed a few years ago and it has totally transformed how I dress - I suit rich autumnal shades far more than the black I used to wear. However the fact that I suit warm colours does give me a challenge about grey hair - I just don't suit the cool colours of grey and silver/white. Though I think it looks fab on those who suit cool colours.

Couldn’t agree more. I love colour in clothing and makeup. I was so happy to see how lovely Queen Elizabeth looks, she wears the most beautiful colours. I have been so tired of seeing only black, white or grey these past few years in clothing. I am a spring so the colour palette for me is bright or warm pastels. The past few years have been so hard to find colour, I heard it is because colours are more expensive to produce and black, white and grey are cheaper to produce. I think that is why we are seeing it so much. I am with you- bring on the colour!

An argument against using younger models is comparable for size 2 women modelling plus size clothes. I wear plus sizes and don't want to see how baggy they are on a size 2. Thankfully, lately, more retailers are using plus size models. And they are aspirational! I'll never be Ashley Graham but I can try.

Hi Tricia, I found out about you and LFF from your story that was published in the May edition of Platinum. A new magazine for women of our generation. A magazine for 'real' women, not airbrushed 20 year olds . Great, at last, recognition for who we are, what we've achieved and what we can still give to life. You mention young models being chosen for catalogues and what a great opportunity these companies are missing by excluding us. Well, Platinum have done us a great disservice as well, one I didn't expect from them. On the cover of the May edition was a photo of Carol Vorderman, a beautiful 59 year old, a woman nearly of our generation. But my goodness what has Platinum done to her? Its like looking at a Barbie version of Carol, they've made her look about 20 and it's scandalous. I've written to the editor expressing my utter disappointment of what they've done to this image and to older women the world over. It's not enough that we're being dismissed because of our age but when we are accepted, we're still not 'ideal' in their eyes, so they put us under the knives of airbrushing and Photoshop. I'm with you in all the comments you make here Tricia. It makes my blood boil when I see a 16 year old advertising on TV what such and such moisturiser does for her skin. God give me strength. Oh dear, I have gone on a bit haven't I? Well rant over. Love your videos, took me a long time to find you but glad I did. Throughly love the serum and lip serum. Looking forward to my next purchase later this week, your foundation.
