Forty years ago when my interest turned to making baskets there was no one around that could teach me and a very limited resourse in the librery .I wou;d buy baskets and copy what the weaver had done. Eventuly I found coarses, and at times had to travel hundreds of miles to attend coarses. Once learned never forgotten. I have passed what learning I have acquired .

By watching this video, I was instantly inspired to create a woven nest for my chickens. I used bamboo and water reeds because I don't have any willows growing in my area. I just love your videos and the way you explain everything in a way that beginners can learn quickly.

Hanna, you make it look so matter of fact and easy. I hope when I try making the same project that mine comes out recognizable. I just found your channel today after watching a decorating/organizing video. I have all kinds of material in my yard that would make beautiful baskets. Okay! Finished my second attempt at a willow basket base. Pretty rough, but much better than the first. I learned a few things…would have worked better if I had sorted my willow types. As Hannah has said, some are better than others…I picked wild willow. I don’t see having fields, so I will have to try to pick one variety at a time and keep them together. Some were just more flexible than others, even with generous soaking. After the leaves have fallen off, how do you tell them apart? I am ridiculously excited to try another and see if I can get it mostly flat😅

Hi Hanna, thank you for your tutorials. They are so helpful. Could you just tell me though, roughly how thick are the butts of your weavers? I have just tried my first base and I think maybe my weavers are a bit thick as I am struggling to close gaps in the weaving. I think my willow is around 4ft long - does it mean the longer the willow the thicker the butt end? Many thanks.

Yes you can! As long as you realize the willow will still shrink, so your basket will be wobbly. But that's ok to practice!

Thank you so much. I long for the day that i weave a base as neatly as you do :) I’d love to understand better why you pull the base sticks towards you every so often? And at one point you undid your weaving and cut off a length of the weavers only to pair and continue weaving? What was the reason?

Hi, I pull the base sticks towards me to make the base in the shape of a bowl. Some people push the stakes away from them but I prefer doing it this way. The bowl shape is to prevent a wobbly basket as the uprights will push the base out when they are inserted and bent upright. This pressure from the uprights could make the base pop out the other side. The basket will never sit right if that happens and wobble. I sometimes join buts before I need to join them to spread out the but joins. If all the but joins are on the same side of the base the shape will be more oval. So I like to spread my joins out evenly within reason. Joining tips does not affect the shape of the base as those joins are not as thick. Hope this helps. Love H
