Episode#19 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
In this video I will be showing you how to create your very own custom diy lock down bar that is as legit as it gets.......16 gauge stainless steel just like in the arcade!
In this video I will show you how to cut out your stainless steel sheet, hammer form the shape, TIG weld up the corners, make and TIG weld up the stiffening strip/ j hooks, and how to draw file/polish this back to a #4 brushed stainless steel finish. This video uses a hammer form that was made from a previous video where we made a 19 gauge steel lock down bar. I recommend watching that 2 part video to learn how to make the hammer form and how to calculate the dimensions of your sheet metal part. So much metal fabricating goodness!
This is an expensive part of the build (lock down bar, receiver, shipping, duty, taxes) and often people require custom widths or even custom lengths to fit their custom pinball cabinets so this info is crucial to be able to make this yourself. Sooo much pinball cabinet goodness for any inspiring cabinet builders out there.
This video is part of a new welding series called "How to Become a Welder"! This series is about anything and everything about welding including safety, setup, proper operation, diagnosing bad welds, and making cool welding projects.
Way of the Wrench is pleased to announce that we have partnered up with the Canadian Welding Association (CWB Group) and are looking forward to producing more amazing welding content for this new series. Very nicely done, looks every bit as good as a factory lockdown bar. Honestly, I expected 16 Ga stainless would put up enough of a fight when trying to hammer form it to make such a project not worth the effort. Happy to be wrong in that assumption. :)

Thanks Dan! Ya it was really hard to not just jump right to welding one up for myself but I thought it would be good to create a diy non welded version first for everyone. Ya I might still put in a fire button but I'm not really a fan of them....I do like a really clean looking ld bar instead. Yeah I should make my own legs but nowadays, the chroming would be more expensive than just buying them. Maybe I'll make a video later once the build is done. Cheers!

Wow, you sir have an amazing array of skill sets! I have no idea what that bar is you are making, but the finishing and metal working skills are impressive! I always wondered how to get the heat discolouration out of stainless besides the electrolysis type of passifiers. Do you know of a chemical that will clean it up?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! It's a lockdown bar that holds the glass in on a pinball cabinet. It also is where your hands go to make the corners feel smooth and not sharp. Yeah I have never done hammer forming before so I wanted to try it out. As for the discoloration, I usually just use a wire brush. You can buy chemical pickling but it's pretty powerful acids that you need to be strong enough to dissolve the layer. Thanks for the watch!

Wow... beautiful work and a really credible result, it looks just like a bought one. But whew, what a lot of work! You make a great case for making your cab a standard width and just buying a real lockdown bar and reciever. I got mine second hand from a guy who repairs & restores real pinball machines (same guy provided my legs & coin door, also used as well as various devices such as the shaker and a couple of power supplies). Out of curiosity, how many hours did you put into that lockdown bar?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! Yeah it looks and plays just like the real deal but $50 instead of $500. Remember that I did the custom width cab to fit my monitor so I didnt have an apron, the monitor goes right to the lockdown bar and yet fills the standard pinball depth. Win win. Ya it was a bit of work but I saved money and everytime I look at it, it's gonna give me a smile. Hrmm hard to say, besides making the form....maybe 3 or 4 hours. You could always make more too and you'd get faster. Thanks for the watch!
@SandmannOZ
@SandmannOZ Жыл бұрын
@@wayofthewrench yeah I always did like the look of the playfield filling the cab but I wanted to use as many standard parts as possible which meant I needed an apron. Still I took advantage of that and added a pair of 10" screens to the apron to display the price and instruction cards, and adjusted to view of the playfields of all the tables so the aprons were obscured beyond the edge of the screen. Still that's the great thing about vpins... we can all create exactly what we want. :)

That is a piece of art! But be open and honest . The amount of hours it took to make it? If you were charging your hourly rate plus materials it would be Astronomical! Better to get a pre made one & work the build around it! Ps give me a quote for an example ? PS love your channel!

Well, you gotta remember that this is a budget build so the experience is building versus just buying outright. For me in Canada, the price of a custom ld bar and receiver after taxes/shipping/customs duty/USD conversion was gonna be around $450 CAN. Plus I wanted to design my custom build so there was no apron needed yet the 43" playfield monitor filled in the stock widebody length. I also could have just bought a kit and put it together but at a premium and then I wouldn't be able to make this diy series for people. These are my costs estimated for supplies. $15-20 bucks stainless, $10 wood (free for me), $15 toggle clamps, $5 of sand paper, $2 in welding rod. Yes I bought a burnishing tool but that was a purchase to speed up the process, you could sand it out as well by hand. Without having to film this and I had a video to follow like this, I would say 2 hours for the form , 30 min for making a template and cutting out the stainless, 10 min for hammerforming, 20 minutes welding it up, 1-2 hours for grinding filing/sanding the ld bar. So maybe 4 or 5 hours of my own time where I got to learn some new skills and hone my old skills and make a product that everytime I step up to play pinball, I'm gonna have a wicked smile on my face......priceless. If I had to make another it would be way faster too...maybe 2 to 3 hours. If I was going to build one for someone else up here in Canada, it would probably be still cheaper then ordering but it would be expensive because my time is free but if you want me to build something for you, it might be close to $35-40 an hour plus materials. Honestly, I'd rather help someone make one for cheap in my shop as I'm a teacher. Thanks for the watch and the good question!

This is awesome and I learned a ton so thank you for this! Unfortunately I don't have all the toys it would take to do this myself. Might I ask though... how many hours did this take to fabricate and what would the price of the materials come out to?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Well most cities now have a makerspace where you can use their tools and machines to make your stuff, you should look into that. I would say 4-5 hours and roughly $50 in materials and a bunch of elbow grease. Thanks for the watch!

Would there be any benefit to running a heat gun on the areas that you are hammer forming to soften the steel a bit?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
No there would be no benefit, especially as the heat gun isn't hot enough and not required. The hammering is really easy to do, it just has to be done in lots of hits to prevent big warps/dents. To aid steel being bent, you need a oxy acetylene torch. There would also be more effort required to cleanup and bring back the finish if you used a torch. Great question though. Thanks for the watch!

Great result! Although I myself rely on a ready-made wide lockbar, I find this video fantastic. The self-construction of the lockbar makes your building guide very individual and unique. Another question occupies me very much: You showed the Logitech speakers at the shopping list. Are you going to leave the speakers & subwoofers in their cases or put them in your cab without the case?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Thanks Coco, yeah from my research, it's the only diy lockdown bar video out there. Yeah the Logitech speakers will be screwed down into the back box behind the 3d printed speaker grills and the sub box will be screwed down with the sub speaker pointing at the hole in the bottom of the cab. I already tried the system and was pleasantly surprised by how clean and powerful the music is. I would highly recommend that Logitech system. Thanks for the watch!

No worries! Ya know, don't let my skills dazzle you too much, believe it or not I had never plunge cut with a jigsaw until that video. I just practiced a few times on some scrap and then did my cuts. The main trick is to not let the end of the blade come out of the cut and jam into the top surface or it will bend/break. Thanks for the props and nice to hear you have progressed on your cab! Cheers!

@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Sure but send them through dm to my instagram account. You just plug it in with a 3.5mm audio cable and they work Bluetooth is a switchable thing I think but usually once you have a device paired (like your cell), it just auto connects and plays that as well. Good for playing your own tunes over top of the pinball game.
