Episode#5 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
This video shows possible options for where to get your monitors, the specifications for your 3 monitors (playfield, back glass, and DMD) that are needed for virtual pinball, how to roughly set up/layout your monitors for a look at what it will look like in a cabinet (and so you can play for the first time!), and finally how to decase the monitors so they will fit into your cabinet.
Monitors I show in this video: The playfield monitor is a Samsung LN46B750U1F and is a 46" 1080p monitor but looks amazing in game mode. Many hours of testing and I was quite impressed with it for vpinball. The 32" backglass is a Sharp LC-32D62U and the specs are just as good as the playfield, it would make a good playfield monitor for a mini build too. The full dmd monitor is a run of the mill 19" Dell 1908fpt monitor.
The best thing about this video is that if you need specific help with a particular issue you are having, I have created timestamps so you can jump to the info you need and get yourself going waaaay faster. I found that I had to hunt down a lot of this information so I thought it would be good to have this resource for other people trying to figure it all out.

@@wayofthewrench I could see the evolution from the early videos on.. not Vancouver.. other end, I’m in Ontarable.. lol trying to get work done but can help but think about going home and making myself a tabletop pinball or arcade… I have a Pi 2 that I made a long time ago with retro pie that a guy in Montreal put together but I don’t think they do it anymore, was tech wizard or something… no big deal there are hundreds of others lol but now I need to build a cabinet for it all haha

Ontario!!! It's ok, we can still be friends eh! LOL. I know the feeling. When I get a project idea, it consumes me until I get it done. Live and breathe pinball right now....just working on the parts video for the virtual pinball cabinet and I need to get on the design so I can build it. That Pi 2 should be able to play nes and maybe snes but I'm not sure if it will play most arcade games great, you may have to get a RPi 4 or even better... build up a pc for Launchbox. Keep me posted on your build!

LOL, I'm always on the hunt for my next project but I already have too many on the go....If ya hang in there, I'll have some videos coming up for you to learn how to make your own virtual pinball cabinet from scratch instead of looking for an old one needing to be restored/stripped. In my area, all of the pinball cabinets are way too nice and expensive to rip apart for a virtual pin. Not sure I could do that too, I might eventually get one to restore.....that would be cool. Crap.....that's my next project....see....SEE! Lol. Thanks for the long term viewing of my videos, it's cool to talk with long time subscribers!

I can confirm the Auto Motion Plus 120 on Samsung TVs work great at simulating the 120hz refresh rate on a 60hz native display without breaking the bank. Playing in Game Mode is a must to see these benefits!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks this tv is awesome. I got a lotta flak for telling people it had auto motion 240hz which made it really smooth. I knew it wasn't 240hz but it was waaay nicer than 60hz. Yeah, it's gotta be on game mode for this though like you said. Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench People get scared of what they don't know and attack. Human nature these days unfortunately. Cannot go wrong with Samsung TV's and their auto motion technology. I only buy Samsung. I have a Samsung 43" TU8000 as my main playfield and glad I didn't spend double or more to get 120hz native. Sometimes spending more isn't always the right move. Its called "Best bang for your buck" which recent generations don't seem to grasp well. Great videos! Building my full size cabinet in the next couple months and appreciate your help.

Well in essence they aren't wrong, it isn't a120 hz or higher refresh rate, it just blends the 60 hz frame rates into something resembling more but it sure does it nicely on this monitor. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there interested in getting more for your money by putting in a little hard work rather than blowing money and making it quicker/easier. Thanks for the comment!

I was watching the flickering thinking that would be a terrible experience. Glad it is just interaction with recording, odd that it didn't show up on the other two.

Yeah no that would be horrible. There is no flicker at all on any of the monitors in person, it's just the filming. I can edit it out but felt it washed out some other parts. I think it's because the playfield has an active refresh rate that can simulate more than 60hz so it looks smoother but my camera is picking it up. Thanks for the watch!

I know you do some incredible tutorials and they are brilliant..but I think for views if you're interested it would be a good idea to make a slimmed down video, almost a montage like Rambo getting ready but instead it's you basically showing a design, cutting it to measure, fitting, sanding, cleaning, putting it together, adding electronics, then finishing touches.. A real dumbed down version of the otherwise informative videos.. Basically a bite sized video of what's possible when you put your mind to it. Think it would help the channel a lot as you deserve more attention for the work you've done..I always like your videos when I see them.. It'll pick up mate 👍🏻

That's a good idea, I'll probably edit a video like that when I'm done the series. There are a lot of people out there that just wanna watch quick videos and I see the appeal but I kinda grew up on tv shows where a rusty car came in, a couple shots of parts being removed, a pallet of new parts rolls in and a shot of it being painted, and then bamn.....a finished restored car! I was always like, " How did they do that?" and was left wanting to learn more. So that is my niche in KZfaq, I want people to come away from my videos feeling excited to try the project because they feel confident about what they have seen/learned. Thanks for the idea, I totally will make one as a glimpse of what the series is about. Cheers!

One other potential consideration with monitors is whether it comes on when power is restored or if you have to manually turn the monitor on. Depending on how you set it up, if you plan on shutting down the PC and monitors when not in use then a monitor that will come back on to the correct input when power is restored is a nice feature. Obviously not necessary, but it would be a pain to have to keep two or three remotes laying around to turn all the monitors back on when you power up the machine!

Yeah I'll be putting a smart power strip that turns on the monitors when the pc is turned on. It should work with that but if not there are ways of getting that to work. Thanks for the watch!

Yeah it can get confusing especially with all the SSF,shaker motors, solenoids,LED strips, etc. I will have to make a clean looking install this time! My arcade cabinet never got that treatment as I was too busy wanting to play it. Thanks for the watch!

Old free pc with free video cards from friends or facebook marketplace. As long as you are patient, you'd be surprised what you can get for free/cheap. Buy a $50 500g ssd drive and do a fresh install and install the baller installer and BAM.....you're playing virtual pinball. If you want 4k 120hz then you're gonna have to spend more money for sure. I am using a i5 3.1 ghz 16g ddr3 ram and a gtx 770. Thanks for the watch bruh!

You look at your different monitor connections and you have to match them to your video card's outputs. Its pretty easy, hdmi to hdmi, display port to display port, etc. If the connection doesn't match then you need to get a cable that has one end hdmi and the other what ever you need it to be. Same software I used in the baller installer video I did. You're just going to have one monitor so you are going to set it up for a desktop view.

You did everything I did, with the exception of taking the monitors apart. You summed up the 3 years it took me in a few videos, but I played my mock set up a lot, which you mentioned. I had mine on a pool table that was lopsided (not worth playing pool on), but had a good foundation. Used that to build a huge arcade cabinet..... Your frustrations and excitement sound so familiar! If I had baller installer at first......... it would have cut my time in half, but I'm glad I learned how it all works. Thanks for the videos, you gave me a bunch of new ideas and explain things succinctly, and I appreciate that. Not easy to find that in this hobby, but there are some amazing people. Great Work!!!! You mentioned you are a teacher, wondering if any of your kids found interest in this? Mine said it was lame (literally said that) before I started, then played, and now they are addicted.

Yeah I spent like 8 months setting up tables and playing them on the floor....it was a lot of fun to "research" this build! Thank you very much, I'm just glad that people are enjoying the content and are getting something out of my tutorials. Yeah not so much, as cool as I think I am and as much as I think how cool pinball is, my students think of me as the old guy tinkering with an ancient gaming device. However, I have set up the vpin on screens before and a bunch of them thought it was pretty cool. Once its all up and running on the cabinet, this thing with be a whole other level. Hey no worries, I'm here to help. I wouldn't mind being a big youtuber but it looks like I'm gonna have to grind it out cause I refuse to yell at people or make trending videos about cats or burn money....lol. I'll just keep trying to make the best videos I can, help as many people as I can, and I'll see where it goes. Yeah this pinball is super addictive. I've been playing fx3 on my ps4 a lot and I'm getting a lot better than I used to be. Lots to learn about each table and how to play them. I'm a big fan of TOTAN, High Speed 2, Monster Mash, and Medieval Madness.

This tutorial is so helpful explaining all the equipment and how it all fits together! I have just a two screen setup with my backglass being a 21" 1080p monitor. But I'm having trouble getting the black glass art and dmd to coexist on the same screen without it being distorted. Is better to have a 4:3 or 5:4 monitor instead to fit everything? What about art work that's only 16:9 would it still work? Keep up the great work!!

Thanks Fred! Well it depends on what kind of pinball era you are wanting to display properly. The newer tables are going to look better than an old elecro mechanical table because of the shape/size of the old elecmech back glass artwork. I usually use the full 1080p screen to display the back glass and I would use the back glass art that has the grill/speaker option. Those look perfect and there is a perfectly sized spot for the dmd, just left click and drag the dmd to the back glass and stretch/fit it for the grill dmd spot and right click save it. My previous build was a 2 monitor setup like this and it looked amazing. Now if I was into older tables more, than I might rotate my monitor or select a more square resolution monitor so it looks better. Just for your reference I am using a 46" playfield, 32" back glass, and a 19" full dmd screen. Thanks for the watch Fred!

Thanks very much, I love arcades too! Lots of memories in arcades when I was younger. Best one I ever went to was one called Friday's in Vernon, B.C. back in the 80s.

Ultrawide cabinet is what I used. Scorpion (by Williams) is 27 inches inside. And Atari Airborne Avenger was 27 inches as well. I did think that was standard widebody until just now as you said at 24 inches.

That would have been awesome to find a fixer upper for this vpin cab with those dimensions but everything around me was too nice or too expensive to do that to. I guess my custom build will be an ultrawide too as it is 25" inside. Cheers!

This is fantastic introduction to considering a virtual pinball build -- I think I could actually start one now. Considering that the playfield is a lot more exposed than something like an arcade monitor I am assuming a glass top is recommended. I think the gloss finish on the playfield just adds to the charm of a pinball machine, but with the image passing through two pieces of glass would you recommend a monitor with a matte finish if it were an option ?

Awesome Rich! You should totally do it, vpinball is totally amazing and this series will totally get you all the info you need. You totally need play field glass, I have seen a bunch of shattered monitors from people dropping things on them....usually a remote control from the top of the backbox. I'm not sure about gloss/matte screens but I would bet that a very slight tint on the glass would be beneficial. I'm going to ask my local glass place about that when I get my tempered glass. im going the laptop route for my first Windows base build. a laptop where the lid broke so my brother-n-law bought a new one and gave me this for parts. using the screen of that for the DMD. got an old non smart 32in LG for the backglass. i just need to get me a Samsung, LG or any TV that powers on when plugged in for the playfield. not trying to break the bank for my first build. I have a 43in Visio, but it doesnt power one when i plug it in. i have to wait for the power cycle and then cut it on. what a pain.

Cool, it's awesome to build on the low cost route. You might have to get an IR repeater to turn on your tv, I was lucky and mine turned on by itself. Good luck dude on your build!

Enyoyed watching your videos and now i decided to build my own pin. As a pinhead from start (restored many machines like Diner, Totan (Tales of the arabien nights etc) I always looked for the possibility to own all of them, seems the time is right and the virtual is coming near the real thing. What you not told is how the monitors / tv connected to the Computer. I suppose Table HDMI, Backglass ? , DMD over DVI ? Thanks for the really good videos, patient speak, tipps and your inspiration. That's awesome Sam! Glad I could help get you excited for your vpin build. Yeah I'm coming from the opposite direction, I really never played pinball because I was horrible at it and didn't want to waste my quarters. I just got into virtual pinball in the last couple years, I didn't even know about it until a subscriber mentioned it. However, now that I have been hooked into virtual pinball, I'm finding that I want to start messing with real pinball tables. So maybe there will be a custom real pinball table diy in the future! I did show the connections between the monitors but it was quick because I thought it was pretty easy. It doesn't really matter which connection you use to connect the monitors to your video card but hdmi cables/connections are the most common. If they use a display port, then you will need a display port cable. If you have dvi, you will need dvi. If your not sure which one you have just google it and go buy the correct one. Now the bigger problem is having enough connections on your video card, make sure you have 3 ports for a 3 monitor vpin cab build for example. Video cards will have different types of ports as well depending on age and brand, just make sure you have the matching ports on your monitors so the card/monitor works. I got my video card first and then made sure my monitors had the ports I needed. You can also get hdmi to dvi/display port adapters or cables too. I had to buy one of these for one of the monitors to work with my video card. If you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate a share out on your social network so I can inspire more people. With the DMD up higher, you are able to accommodate the newer Stern screen size.

Yeah this is an old video, I decided to go with a full dmd so all the new Stern tables look great. I'm a big fan of the Legacy of the Beast Iron Maiden table.

I have a newb question that you may be able to help with. I am seriously considering building one of these. I am enjoying your videos and you've helped me keep motivated about researching and eventually build. I saw on the dmd monitor you can adjust the size and things but my question is, could I get away with 1 larger monitor in the head for the back glass and put the DMD window at the bottom of that screen to eliminate the dmd screen? I haven't installed the app yet or anything but figured you'd be the one to know.. Thanks so much for your awesome tutorials. I can tell you are an instructor by how well you present your videos..love it!

Thanks Jim! Glad you're enjoying the content. You should totally build a vpin! The setup you're talking about is called a 2 monitor setup. One is the playfield and the other is the back box. You can download back box b2s images that have a grill so it looks like the original speakers and position your dmd in there. Good luck on your build!

It's pricey! your Circular saw track was cool, didn't know that existed, but it's like 98 bucks at Lowes. I have all the electronics and computer know how, I just lack in the woodworking department. I've had real pins in the past and had to sell them off when I moved but I kept my mame cabinet and other real arcades. I'll definitely look at B2S backglass files and pull them down. I may have more questions when I start working on this thing in the summer.

Yeah wood is stupid expensive these days. That track saw may be 90 bucks but you can use it again for more projects too. Remember, you're saving money building it yourself. Good luck on your build!

Enjoying your build. One thing you never mention about your TV's and monitors is if they power up when power is applied. I know you are using a smart strip that will power up the slave outlets when the master outlet senses current draw but wouldn't the TV still need to auto start when the power is applied?

Most tvs will auto start up if you turn the tv on and unplug it. If it auto turns on when you plug it back in, then my master/slave power strip will work ( all 3 of mine do). If it doesn't turn on, then you may need to set up a ir repeater or other methods like soldering the power button on or have something else trigger the on button. Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench I have a TCL 32 inch that I bought brand new from Best Buy that will NOT do this. I rigged up a Velcro dot that the remote hangs on. I thought this would be no big deal but after dealing with it for about a year or so, I am finding that it’s a pain in the arse and need to find a different way.

You need to look into an ir repeater setup, shouldn't be hard to do. I didn't need it but maybe once my build is done, Ill go back and add a video on that. Cheers!

Are you going to do DOF or Ledwiz and do addressable LEDs? They are pretty awesome if you go that way. I'm trying to get my table that direction.

I am going to do DOF and addressable led lights for sure ( already bought the teensy, octo board, led strips). I can tell this project is going to be almost neverending as there are so many cool upgrades to do but the plan is do as much as I can with the zl25z board. Thanks for the watch!

Hey there. I realize this vid has been up for about a year - I just wanted to say - that I have started to watch your series on the virtual pinball machine build - and your vids have ACTUALLY taught me what I need to know - much more than anyone I have found on KZfaq thus far - so thank you so much for your thorough and easy to follow tutorials - you're a godsend to newbies like me. I do have a question - for the main table monitor (what you call the playfield monitor) - does it have to be a "Monitor" like computer monitor - or can it be a TV ...because I would LIKE to have the main "monitor" be 4k - but trying to find a 42-43 inch Monitor with 120 refresh rate is not only hard they are very very expensive - but 4k TVs of that size are much cheaper (but hard to find with 120 refresh - usually they are 60) ....so can I use 4k TV or does it actually need to be a "computer monitor"....sorry for the big post/long winded question. Thanks in advance. Jaek. Ps - I plan on watching your welding tutorials too...something I've been wanting to learn for years... can't wait to check those out too

As for suggestions, I would go tv with 4k 120hz if you can and if your gpu cant handle 4k, you can turn it down to 1080p and later upgrade your gpu. You can totally use a tv, most do. No on the full screen DMD. I switched and got a 4 to 1 ration LCD DMD. I like them close to the playfield to see scoring etc. Only Voltaire had one built in the playfield.

yeah it was tempting to put a dmd where people put their dot matrix panels so that all of them could have that feature.

Six years ago I build a budget VR pinall machine. I wasn't aware of the response time on... say the flippers, after I went an bought a real pinball machine. I was kind of horrified of the delay I didn't noticed at first - BUT !! It only takes a couple of minutes before your brain gets used to it - adapting to it.

Yeah I could imagine you get used to your vpin cab so a little lag might be ok but it's probably best to just search out better components. On my trial setup, my components left very little to no lag which played pretty awesome. However, jumping to a real pinball cabinet has a way different feel to it. I just trued a real Metallica pinball cabinet for the first time and I hated it....I actually like the vpin version way better. You still have your vpin cabinet?

@@wayofthewrench yes I still have it. Build on my sons old pc. Two second hands screens for the head. New cheap Sharp tv for the playfield (I gave up finding out what models that had true 100 hertz). There are some ball move 'studder' seen when playing, but the overall game experience is good. I do think of upgrading it from VP9 to VPX or whatever is out there now. That's how and why I found your video ☺👍

Nice! Im relatively new to the vpin scene but if you're still only playing vp9 tables, I would highly recommend getting vp10 installed ( just released version 10.7). There is a huge difference in the tables and a ton of new tables coming out. I ran all of them off of my i3 530 2.9 ghz pc with a gtx 1050 so maybe your old pc can still work for the upgrade, depending on what you have. Cheers!

@@wayofthewrench I did install vpX (if that is the same as vp10 !?). But somehow I ended up using the vp9, I don't remember why. Maybe there were more tables back then, maybe vpX didn't have the specific table I wanted. I don't know either what my sons old computer contains of hardware, but when playing 'Tales of the Arabian Night' with 3D moving objects, it is challenged. So maybe the computer isn't ready for more vp10's more advanced games. I'll try and dig into it. Cheers! :-)

I have searched for vpin once and KZfaq constantly plays your videos. Idk who you know at KZfaq or what you know but I am sorry to say I’m blocking you. Not that I dislike your content. I enjoy it. Just that KZfaq seems to play your videos after each video I watch, even when it has nothing to do with vpin.

Nah the playfield monitor was $50 used from a little old man in Whiterock, B.C. Looks and plays great with no stutter/lag. Cheers!

The playfield monitor is a Samsung LN46B750U1F and is a 46" 1080p monitor but looks amazing in game mode. Many hours of testing and I was quite impressed with it for vpinball. The 32" backglass is a Sharp LC-32D62U and the specs are just as good as the playfield, it would make a good playfield monitor for a mini build too. The full dnd monitor is a run of the mill 19" Dell 1908fpt monitor. Thanks for the watch!

Higher refresh rates will make it look smoother along with a 4k resolution. 1 ms is really good for the lag as well.

Either but usually a gaming monitor is better. You have to have large viewing angle, low latency, and high refresh rate for a good display. Use Rtings.com to find out specs of displays you are thinking of buying. Cheers!

movies are filmed at 24FPS and the motion picture industry determined that anything over something like 11FPS (from memory I didnt go double check this stat) looks like smooth motion to the human eye. I think people put way too much stock on FPS. Main;ly I thnk the monitor companies throw the FPS spec out all over and people believe the hype. I think the lag you are refering to is more a factor of ghosting than FPS lag. After proper size for a playfield monitor viewing angle is probably the mosty important stat since you are going to be looking down at an angle at the playfield monitor totally not how PC monitors are are designed to be used.

Actually 24 fps is the industry standard as they deemed that this looks like real life motion with no loss. They also film in higher fos for different situations like a slowed down scene, if you slow motion a 24 fps clip it stutters and looks choppy. As far as fps goes for vpinball, The higher fps smoothes out the ultra fast motion that happens during gameplay, like a really fast ball shot. It dies nothing for the static playfield stuff. Yeah the viewing angle is really important, especially if you are laying the playfield down at an angle instead of flush with the cabinet. Refresh rate is really important too so you can prevent lag. Baller installer which runs pinup popper, visual pinball 10, and future pinball. There area few others like pinvol, xpadder, DOF, etc but these are extras. You building a vpin? Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

Yeah I hear ya, but time and experience makes you better. I used to suck at pinball but the more you play, the better you get and there are a lot of tricks to learn as well.
