I know it's 4 months old, but this was a very helpful video. I like to play the two knights defence against the Italian, but I've always avoided the fried liver with the exact line you showed at the start of the video. No more! I have already won two games with these tips. I won't go for it all the time, but this has definitely given me another weapon if I'm feeling like a bit of excitement.

So awesome! No one talks about this as black! I'm gonna try it. At the very least it is practice with defending, which I think a lot of puzzles and trainers don't prepare you for. But actually a lot of the lines are very logical as you point out. If you remember the ideas, you will probably be able to rediscover the right moves even if you didn't memorize them perfectly.

Hey Nelson, I remember watching this video when I was trying to wrap my head around the Fried Liver and it helped me a lot. I've just gone and made an even deeper video (an hour long one) on this subject following as many move 9 variations white could make in the Fried Liver and how it could be countered by Black as well as many mistakes that could be made as the position gets more complicated. I also found one of the most ridiculous engine lines I've ever seen with three brilliant moves involving sacrifices. It's a really fun opening and I try and play it often especially with Black.

This was a great walk through. I play fried liver as white AND black cause at my ELO rating of 1200... ...not many people know the lines all the way through so i come out ahead either way. The plan is to get my rating to go up as high as it can before everyone else catches onto the full lines.

Great video! Before watching this I won a game with black going into the a3 line and after Nxd5 I tried walking out of the diagonal with Kd7 instead of playing Qh4. I ended up winning, analyzed the game after and learned that my defence was wrong, and that only Qh4 saves the game. I got lucky. My opponent resigned a few moves later because he failed to punish my mistake and his attack dissipated. I was just up a rook, lol. I found your video looking for ways to defend against the fried liver. I think the two knights defence is great because if they don’t go into the fried liver, then black has a really comfortable game. And if you study navigating the mine field, you’ll have decent chances to stave off the attack. Most players will not be prepared beyond the first couple of intuitive moves. I’m struggling to understand which bishop to block when inevitably retreating my king. Sometimes you need the light-squared bishop, sometimes the dark-squared bishop. I’m relatively low rated though. Maybe I need more practice.

I analyzed the position with stockfish, after the knight takes the rook, you give a check with your queen forcing a queen trade, and try to exchange your knight for White's light square bishop. This way, the material should be more or less equal (you'd be a pawn down by following Stockfish) but the position in -2. You have the bishop pair, and white's knight is basically trapped

After 8)...Nb4 9)Bb3 line is not discussed. I won lot of games in this opening till 1990 influenced by P. Morphy. During those years there were no engines available in town limits. We had to depend on books. Max. Eue's How to play King Pawn openings discusses the variation of King moving towards queen's side. But when I played it with IM Ravi Hegde he went for the option Na5 attacking the bishop & I lost 10 games.

Alright, another iconoclast! Several years ago, I got into an on-line debate with a chess coach who was telling all his followers (presumably mostly scholastic players) that the Fried Liver Attack was awesome and would win tons of games for them. I decide to play Devil's Advocate and suggested some lines for Black to show the variation was at best unclear - a kid who did his homework could turn the tables by surviving the attack and retaining the extra piece. After a few more exchanges, the guy called me an idiot and banned me from his blog. With that said, the move 6. d4 instead of 6. Nxf7 is legitimately dangerous. IMO, 6. d4 rather than the knight sac is a better reason to avoid this variation. Heck, if you can provide some strong lines against 6. d4, I may start playing it myself.

I usually play 5...b5 as black to avoid the Fried Liver, and have found most people do not know how to respond to that move and it takes them out of their preparation. But I like your analysis and will have to look at it again to see if I want to try it. The most difficult thing with the Fried Liver as black is remembering all the best moves, because like you said, one wrong move for black and it is over.

@joelpenley9791
@joelpenley9791 2 жыл бұрын
@@deadlypendroppingby yes, but this now deflects their bishop, which allows black to play Qxd5. If white is not prepared for this, it usually throws them off. From what I remember, best for white is now to retreat the bishop all the back to c1. Unless the theory has changed on this, I studied all this like 15+ years ago.
@zanti4132
@zanti4132 2 жыл бұрын
One of my former students had excellent results with 5...b5 in scholastic tournaments. As would be expected, most of his opponents played 6. Bxb5, when after 6...Qxd5 he got a position very much to his liking. His bishops were especially nice once they came out to c5 and b7. As for 6. Bf1, yes that is considered advantageous to White, but it's doubtful anyone who isn't familiar with the theory on this opening would play it.

You say the two moves White can choose from for move 9 are 9. a3 and 9. O-O, but I always thought the best move for White in this position was actually 9. Qe4, defending c2 and pinning the e5 pawn, in preparation for d4 (which both attacks the now pinned e5 pawn and opens a line for the c1 bishop...). It would be nice to see how (or even whether!) Black can defend against _that_.

UNEXPLORED ATTACK - At 23:16 when the white queen is at f5 and the black king is at d6 and it has only c5 and e7 squares that are not under check then a check by the white knight when it moves to b5 has not been explored by you as that is a forcing move instead of the line you pursued from this point by moving the white queen from f5 to f7. Or let's go to 23:21 with white queen at f7 and the white knight gives a check through b5 then the black king would have no option but be forced to move to c5 and putting it at the most forward point of the black line.

Yoooo, just played a fried liver game and won. The difficult thing is everyone never plays these lines. They just play the moves that start it. After Nc3 you have no idea what they are going to play. I’ve had a lot games where I had to review afterwards with the engine to discover the best move. I’ve slowly been getting a better idea of the moves I can play in certain positions and it finally payed off. I just played solid defense and then eventually my opponent started running low on time bc it took him forever to decide each move. Eventually he just blundered away the game once he got under 20 seconds.

Lol I was surprised to see that my usual response to Nb4 as white isn't even analised! I play Qe4 defending c2 and threatening a3 the next move (and I think the position is unpleasant for black from there, they have to save both knights and you can continue attacking with stuff like d4/castle/rook e1). Is this bad? I guess not being a good line explains why my opponents usually seem confused by it.

The best try is 9.Bd3 and then 9...Nd4 10.Qe4 c6 11.c3 Nf6, and now if 12.Qe1, there's 12...Nf3+! 13.gxf3 Qxd3. A nice little trap.

If anyone can answer would white pawn to g4 be a response to black attacking the bishop?

Or just do the Traxler gambit. But Its great info for those of us who like to play fried liver as white.

0:00 Wow, I wish I've seen this video earlier. I had this exact position in a simul against 2600+ GM and blew it :( I made it to 40 move mark, but then the GM had mate in 2 so I resigned. Could've played it much better

Don't worry even if you know these moves you would probably still lose. With perfect play white is still slightly better and gms know how to capitalize that advantage. The only thing that would change that gm would be probably impressed by ur theory
