#checkers
Abstract strategy game where players move disc-shaped pieces across an 8 by 8 cross-hatched ("checker") board.
Pieces only move diagonally, and only one space at a time. If a player can move one of his pieces so that it jumps over an adjacent piece of their opponent and into an empty space, that player captures the opponent's disc. Jumping moves must be taken when possible, thereby creating a strategy game where players offer up jumps in exchange for setting up the board so that they jump even more pieces on their turn. A player wins by removing all of his opponent's pieces from the board or by blocking the opponent so that he has no more moves.
This game, also known as Draughts, is part of the Checkers family.
The Official Checker Board to be used in tournaments and official matches of associations like international WCDF, ACF, and APCA usually shall be colored of green and off-white (buff). Board squares shall be not less than 2 inches nor more than 2½ inches wide. Tournament pieces are Red and White, but called Black and White in game related literature.

Yes, it has been sadly maligned for many years now. Let's bring it back!

Positive points: The video is well produced and visually appealing. You make us aware that checkers is more subtle than we think. Some of your tactical advice is pertinent. Negative points: No, no and no. Mandatory capture is not a tournament rule. It's simply one of the most fundamental rules of the game. Would it ever occur to anyone to change the rules of chess, on the pretext that we don't play in tournaments? Especially as playing without these rules means losing 90% of the richness and interest of the game, even if it's counter-intuitive for a beginner. It's only by learning the art of giving away pieces to win more that you can begin to play checkers well. Keeping your pieces in the last row as long as possible is not a good idea. Beginners will soon realize this. What you indicate as an illegal move is indeed illegal for American checkers, but not for International checkers, another form of the game that is very popular outside English-speaking countries. In short, I'm sorry for my few critical remarks, but above all, congratulations on your willingness to promote checkers!

Actually this video made me realize that it is an “official” rule at all while I was trying to play online checkers. My whole life I grew up not “having” to take a piece and could choose not to. It certainly changes the game a ton to force someone into a position but in all my time of checkers I’ve never in person played with someone who adheres to the “must take” rule.

@@crustader3755Yes, unfortunately many people refuse to apply this rule because they mistakenly think it limits playing possibilities, when in fact it's quite the opposite. There isn't a checkers variation in the world that doesn't use this rule. It's because of this misapplication of the rules that checkers is often regarded as a small game of limited interest, nowhere near as good as chess. I know of no other strategy game whose rules are so poorly applied by the general public!

I appreciate the effort to make a film about checkers, but unfortunately, this material contains many false pieces of information that mislead people. The animations also show incorrect moves.

No, there is no 'huffing' rule in the official game rules. It's a schoolyard myth that causes people to not take checkers seriously.

It's an interesting question. There are definitely many references to the rule as being official (for example pokegym.net/community/index.php?threads/checkers-rules-unfair.13302/. - see bullets 16-17), so I thought I would mention it as such. However, if I am mistaken, or if my information is out of date, I apologize.

@@LegendaryTacticsYour example isn't well chosen: someone who doesn't know the game and doesn't play it gives his opinion on the rules he'd like to change... He has, of course, absolutely no idea of the real impact of this rule on the course of the game, nor of the complex strategies that this makes possible. There are many variations of checkers, and ALL of them apply the compulsory capture. The "huffing" rule is only applied in very rare variants. So, for American checkers or international checkers, there's no ambiguity: no "huffing" and capture is mandatory. It's not difficult to check, just consult the federations for the official rules. Everyone is free to use their own house rules, but in public encounters, especially tournaments, you have to speak the same language.

My grandpa used this rule to teach me to pay attention to the board. Boy was he merciless and used it to gain the edge vs 5 year old me. Good times!
