Like many of you, I spend a lot of time imagining arguments in my head. I have my opinion going in, and my imaginary opponent has theirs. I pretty much always win, and my opponent graciously admits defeat and changes their opinion on the subject.
This is obviously a fantasy. Not only is it hard to win arguments in the real world, but it is even harder to genuinely persuade someone to change their stance on a topic.
But what if you could take your fantasies of triumph and make them a reality? What if you could win an argument every single time?

Mastering the Art of Persuasion: Winning Arguments Every Time **Summary:** In this video, the speaker delves into the art of winning arguments consistently by employing effective strategies. The key points include: 1. **Logical Mastery:** Understanding the difference between good and bad logic is crucial. Arguments must be both valid (conclusion follows the premise) and sound (premise is true). 2. **Evidence-Based Positioning:** Building your argument on solid evidence is paramount. Credible sources, high journalistic standards, and legitimate studies should support your position. 3. **Recognizing Assumptions:** Acknowledging the assumptions underlying your argument and ensuring alignment with your opponent's assumptions is essential for productive debates. 4. **Simplicity is Key:** Focusing on one or two main points strengthens your argument. Too many premises can dilute your message and make your position less persuasive. 5. **Avoiding Logical Fallacies:** Steering clear of common fallacies such as ad hominem attacks, slippery slope arguments, and straw man fallacies enhances the strength of your argument. 6. **Understanding Motivated Reasoning:** Acknowledging that humans are not purely rational and are often motivated by emotions is crucial. Being aware of this can help navigate heated arguments. 7. **Avoiding Fight or Flight Mode:** Arguments can trigger the fight or flight response. Employing techniques such as asking for more details, being respectful, and validating the other person's perspective can prevent escalation. 8. **Persuasion Over Winning:** The goal is genuine persuasion, not merely winning. Calming the other person and oneself when triggered allows for more productive discussions.

One major thing to keep in mind while arguing, there are many people who do not have truth as the ultimate goal. It's hard to imagine that many people are not interested in getting to the truth or that truth even exists. If getting to the truth is not the common goal in an argument, you are not likely to settle anything. Some people just want to win at any cost.
@nvmffs
@nvmffs 6 ай бұрын
Finally someone intelligent enough to point out the obvious. The only thing I disagree with in your comment is the word "many". It's not many people. Pretty much no one is interested in the truth. Not even the judge in the courtroom. Especially if going for the truth would bring about negative consequences on them. The truth is almost always ugly, inconvenient, disillusioning and depressing. People are weak. They can't handle the truth. The only times people choose what's true and factual are when it benefits them somehow. Arguments are about perception, not truth. Both sides are usually trying to create the perception that they have won, regardless of the way of achieving that. And appealing to logic is one of the least effective methods, unfortunately. This has been a source of immense frustration for me my whole life. I refuse to stoop down to that level of existence and it's no wonder I have the hardest time accepting anything the society does or thinks.

@@nvmffscan you make one objectively truth statement that isn’t biased by human logic?? I’ll wait. The truth is overrated, what people need to seek is clarity, certainties and uncertainties that one can trade off. Building rapport, validate by reiterating their point, and suggestively querying them for compromise is my own take on tactics that always what works. Once you know the level of difficulty you’re looking to face gives you a good idea of what it’s going to take. Even if someone doesn’t agree with you, you can usually aim them in a direction for later suggestive approaches. You don’t want to get off the wrong foot when it comes to needing to bring someone to the other side.

One of the hardest parts of becoming logical in your opinions is accepting when you are wrong. I've made a conscious effort to not hold dogma, but it's an ongoing process. I don't have to be willing to accept every idea, but i can understand the place of reasoning it came from and acknowledge when my own thoughts are incomplete. We sometimes forget we are not the main character or the end of all reasoning, but that every one of us is a sapient and independent mind with reasons for why we believe what we do. Maybe those reasons aren't always good, but they are reasons nonetheless.

One of the big problems today is that so many people are not only poorly informed but completely misinformed. It's always better to know nothing about a topic and be able to draw on what you do know about reality, your life experiences, etc. Than to start from flatly incorrect information and go from there. I've heard it said that a PHD in any topic may only be an inch wide,.......but a mile deep. Many people just do not seem to understand even the concept of expertise anymore. They seem to imagine it's an inch wide and maybe and inch and a half deep. They literally have no idea how much there is that they do not know. So they must already know everything important. And they draw their conclusions accordingly. Bad conclusions, very very bad conclusions. Any change in anything is some kind of personal attack on their beliefs. Beliefs they've held for a long time (therefore must be correct) or beliefs they gained from someone they respected (also, therefore must be correct). That's just not how reality works, we are all wrong sometimes, more often than any of us are comfortable with. Even people like me who like to find out that they are wrong about something. That gives me the chance to find out what's right, instead of just continuing on being wrong. I can do a lot of harm when I'm wrong. So can everyone else. But no amount of evidence will convince an idiot. They'll question the motivations of your sources no matter how many there are or how independently they came to their conclusions...... Yeah, that's what they want you to think. Someone actually said that to me recently. This someone is also objectively the worst person I personally know. But their "interpretation" of reality gives them power over others so they are sticking to it. At least until they end up in prison, hopefully. (Really they do deserve it) Eventually the world will get so screwed up people will have no choice but to respect expertise again. Electing idiots to run the world only works when your objective is to hide how badly we've screwed things up. I mean, we genuinely could have colonized the solar system by now and have access to endless resources, if we were motivated to. We literally have tons of enriched nuclear spacecraft fuel sitting around waiting to blow each other up with. We somehow someway have got to figure out how to put smart thoughtful people back in charge. And keep the apes that throw their feces back just long enough for changes to take effect. The world is going to change, as much as we'd like to deny this it's truly the only constant in life. We can can continue to bumble through pretending like we meant for all this to happen. Orrrrrr......... maybe we could try shaping things in a positive direction for once. At this point even dumb old non sentient chatgpt could do a better job than we are. Unfortunately that would mean some people would have to give up some things that they never really had to begin with. How many non wealthy Americans really feel free these days? Wealth is unfortunately the only way to attain freedom, but its at a huge cost and one that is carried by everyone else. It might be in slow motion, you might not see it everyday. But make no mistake, you are paying for those few to be truly free. And you pay for it with your freedom and general well being. I'm under a enormous amount of stress right now from events in my personal life so I'll admit my views trend toward pessimism lately. But I've thought about these things since I was a child and always come to similar conclusions. And I don't think I'm basing them on personal bias. I think we can all see it if we choose to look. That's also why my happiest friends never ever ever look. Ignorance can rrally be bliss. Ignorant asshole bliss but bliss for them just the same. I'm just too curious to remain ignorant of anything I find interesting. And I want to know how we turn out so badly it literally keeps me up at night. Not me personally, I know I'll just die one day. That's life. But there is a very good chance that we are effectively alone in the universe. Sure there is probably something like us out there somewhere, space is kinda big. But the problem is that space is kinda big. And the chances that made us seem so unlikely that it just feels to me very unlikely anyone else is close enough to matter. If life's job is to spread to every niche. Then we have the ultimate responsibility on our shoulders, to spread it. Hopefully mostly the good parts, but even the bad parts have their place. Arguing with people about virtually anything feels like such a waste of time anymore. So many of us are just too stupid or stubborn to get it no matter how well you show them or how sensitive you are while doing it. They've usually tied so many other things to those beliefs that changing their minds would mean rearranging their entire life. And nobody wants to do that. The first time someone tried to explain God to me I couldn't help but ask how can you imagine an eternal God but not an eternal nature? The answer is that nature doesn't give a shit about you and God watches out for you over your shoulder. Like the luckiest of us had from our parents as kids. Sounds really nice. But now we are adults with real problems that have real, simple solutions. They just take a little time to work. So basically, we all just need to grow the hell up.

What you said about arguing with unsolvable topics I fully agree with, however I'd love to tell you of my experiences in such cases. Sometimes (intelligent people no doubt) I've come to find myself and them included might argue on a topic and not realize perhaps that the conclusion is unsolvable (ie. via concluding that we cannot conclude in the middle of a heated debate where you don't agree with the other's views but I'd usually realize later on how the argument couldn't be concluded) however I have had rare cases as I say with intelligent people. Where we'd actually still learn and feel more adapted from the research we pick up in the debate. So my conclusion is sometimes engaging in the unsolvable arguments teach us how to react better, learn more and create better arguments for the solvable ones. Like I've personally picked up a lot of information and levels of arguing just on the unsolvable arguments, for example we cannot conclude that naruto will beat superman in a fight, however having engaged in that argument, even though no conclusion is possible, still ended up learning more factors to each character and learning each possible side of the argument. Even if I say begin learning truths behind what could make my opponents argument true if I find myself in the opposite side of the argument and learnt how to persuade others with those points. Just a note :D

That happened to me the other day. It's disheartening that people will not admit when they are wrong. I think it takes a lot more _courage_ to admit you're wrong, and say "I stand corrected." I've noticed that people simply will not admit being wrong under any circumstances. Also, it's a lot more work to be kind, than hostile. Hostility is the easy, lazy approach. Kindness takes effort.

I’m bringing this up because I’m willing to be educated I recently stated because I didn’t like the Arrogant Way, Mister musk was explaining some thing they should drive your 1950s pick up truck for the rest of your life and it would be less damaging to the environment than an electric car Because of the production of the lithium ion batteries. When you reference this in the video I thought well I’d better be willing to accept new information it’s starting to sound like I’m wrong. However, I noticed your only metric for environmental impact was how much CO2 would be produced in the lifetime of each vehicle. I feel that this ignores other aspects of damaging the environment CO2 missions alone would certainly suggest that the electric battery car is best. I feel that this ignores the manufacturing process and the disposal of the electric vehicle. I appreciate anyone’s intelligent input.

That is funny I love this topic, and actually made a video a few months ago with the exact same title. But people misunderstood my meaning, as the best way to win any argument is to not participate. To be okay with being wrong is one thing, but to stop trying to convince others is something else altogether. To truly 'win' a debate, one realizes that you win either way, if you see that even if wrong, you learned something. Which is even more rewarding than being 'right'

Three things you’ll never be able to change in the other person just by talking to them… ego, religion and politics. So if the argument involves those things, forget about it. On a side note, it’s surprising how closely related those three things are.

Honestly if it was that easy to win arguments by using evidence then arguments wouldn’t even be a thing The problem is that people don’t even care if there wrong it’s called confirmation bias We so desperately want to be right that when we find out we’re wrong we just ignore that

This all implies both parties are arguing in good faith AND have the same goal. This is far from the common experience for most folks. If this video was titled 'An overview of the physiological changes your body deals with during stress and how to deal with it', it'd be great. But it's not. It's clickbait. If you go into a stacked argument, logic won't help you win. Being kind won't help you win. Nothing you've said here will help me WIN anything. It'll help me understand why everything happened, especially if I've never been in the situation and it's all new to me. If by 'Win' you mean 'Walk away while you still have your self-respect', then yeah. But that's not how viewers are going to parse the title, and you know it. This is the first Aperture clickbait I've ever seen. I sure do hope it's the last. I come to Aperture because you guys DON'T traffic in clickbait hyperbole. If you're gonna just be like every other channel, then what's the point?

IMO you've only lost an argument if you are still on the wrong side at the end of it. Be willing to change perspective and accept the other person's point of view. Don't only outwardly argue them, but inwardly argue yourself to either solidify yourself or realize mistakes in your own perspective.

Before you go all in on published research, know about published research. Much research has been published that shows how much published research is wrong. Published Research is only as good as the parameters used and only as honest as the publisher wants to be. Many youtube channels have done pieces on how published research can be wrong.
