To be fair, Brazil definitely did better in 2014 than they would have if they were not the hosts. There is absolutely no way that they were the #4 team in the world that year. Normally, they probably should have gone out in the round of 16 based on the quality they were showing on the pitch.

Extra Rule: The world cup is not about winning it. For some nations making it into the world cup is enough. For some nations reaching the quarter finals is a lifelong dream. It's really an event where, really not being PC culture, everyone's a winner. Except for South Africa, and Argentina/Germany if you underperform.

As a South African, I can confirm that a lot of what you said. South Africans are very athletic hence our success in many sporting codes. We are currently rugby world champions; been #1 in cricket for a long time; even win a surprising amount of gold medals in the olympics. When it comes to soccer though, the main problem is that it is considered a "black sport" and with that association comes a severe lack of support. When I was in primary school (predominantly white btw), we not allowed to even kick a soccer ball during break because it was "dangerous" yet rugby was allowed. Detention after detention, we would still bring new soccer balls after our old ones got confiscated and play. With the lack of financial support comes a lack of infrastructure. If you went to any township, I swear you would find some of the most skillful soccer players you have ever seen. But the majority of those kids have never played on proper grounds nor received proper training. That is why to this day it is so rare to find even a professional South African soccer player who is good at basic things such as passing and shooting. Additionally, we are seldom represented by anything remotely close to the best soccer players the country has to offer. Soccer team trails are always biased and corrupt, and scouting is virtually non-existent when compared to rugby, where players are found at high school level and selected to play in big sponsored tournaments such as Craven week. It is such a shame that the legacy of apartheid continues to shine in South Africa. Black people's potential is seldom recognized in all fields. We have the talent it takes to win the world cup but until we undo the racial discrimination against blacks, that dream will never be realized. Even in academia, business and politics, there remain strong racial undertones. This racial tension is causing the country to stagnate. I'm pretty sure that Elon Musk wouldn't be the world's richest man if he had stayed here for example. I only pray that someone like Elon Musk decides to convince the world that South Africa is worth fixing in this regard. Which is both ironic and unlikely, lol.

Anyway all the rules seem about accurate for success I didn't know about the South Africa though not being allowed to participate don't why they were banned by FIFA but we're allowed to play arguably play their more popular sports Cricket and Rugby? S U P R E M E sure, but is it more popular than soccer? I highly doubt it lol Meanwhile in America, we have the NFL, NBA, and MLB that are more popular than our league, the MLS. Granted, the MLS is nothing compared to the Premier League, Ligue 1, or Serie A abroad.

...Honestly, I think that's why the U.S. Men seems to "struggle" on the international stage. We're getting better. The MLS is getting tougher overall, the NCAA is tightening up, and we have more of talent pool to pull on. We basically have all the ingredients for several World Cup runs, but somehow we've never really managed it.

Im sure we’d have more Clint Dempsey’s and Christian Pul...I forget how to spell his last name, but you know whom I speak of...if soccer were a primary sport in the US as opposed to second tier. We absolutely have the althletes for it. Look at the results of the Olympics (for our caliber of athletes, not soccer performance)

that would honestly be amazing. reminds me a bit of the european championship in sweden 1992, with denmark only being admitted due to the USSR dropping out shortly before, which made them the biggest outsider possible since they didnt qualify on paper but in the end actually managed to win the whole thing. sure i wasnt alive and the final was against germany (my country), but seeing recaps of that still sounds like a magical story. sure iceland qualified regularly (and honestly Icelands EM matches in 2016 were all an absolute blast to watch) but winning against all odds makes for the best stories.
