Zaire became the first national team from sub-Saharan Africa to qualify for the World Cup in 1974, but it wasn't a happy debut for the nation now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo in West Germany, as they were beaten 9-0 by Yugoslavia and mocked for defender Mwepu Ilunga's seeming lack of understanding of the rule of football at all.
