Continuing on in my series of Cthulhu Wars Strategies, I'm covering my FAV... heh heh, ok, couldn't say it with a straight face... this faction ruins people's days more than most factions, they feel unfair, they're powerful...at least with some basic Black Goat strategies behind you. Thats what this video does, if you feel like they're weak, this video should fix it. Good luck and bring on the mother of monsters, Shub-Niggurath!

Hi all, There is a balance errata for Black Goat by Peterson Games. The problem was against EXPERIENCED players Black Goat tended to lose, especially in games with lots of players. It was too easy for other players to keep the Black Goat from gaining its 5th spell book. (Some people tried giving the Black Goat an extra Dark Young.) But now there are two official fixes. >> 1st problem:

Great video! Can we use necrophagy if all figures in area got pain result and the area became free? I mean, in spellbook it says that you move your ghouls as a 1 step and only after that you add pain results. So can I move my ghouls even if every figure in battle got their pain result already? And also, can I hit my own units with necrofagia to spread them to next locations?

I really enjoy your videos! You've been doing a great work so far on Cthulhu Wars. This one, though, is a little more rough around the edges than the others in terms of strategic advice..

I'll do better! I'm constantly trying to switch formats and styles of how I film things to try and get better, I'll work on Black Goat more when I get to neutral faction advice, thanks for the feedback!

Then, here's a couple of things you could try as strategies :-) : 1.0) (Optional) First turn Shub-Niggurath - bullies the rest to either stymie their growth by awakening Great Old Ones on the second Action Phase or awaken them on the third, after you have consolidated your Power base. You will get a maximum of one Gate on the second turn through Avatar, if you feel adventurous. 1.1) (Optional) Focus on your power base through a sacrifice two Acolytes for The red Sign - Dark Young - Dark Young - Acolyte - Acolyte opening. 1.2) (Optional) Go Full Aggro if someone builds a lightly-defended Gate close enough to you by a sacrifice two Acolytes for The Red Sign - Dark Young - Move (once or twice as needed) - Battle (once or twice as needed) - Capture the now-alone Acolyte if needed - Recruit one or two Acolytes with your remaining Power. 2) Never spend more than two Power total in the whole game for your 4-6-8 Area spellbook requirements unless if you absolutely need to. Playing normally will get you to 3-4 Areas by itself, Necrophagy abuse will net two more. If you are lucky, you can even get to 6-7 Areas by using the Pains inflicted upon you - after all, you will either get attacked or will win without any trouble! Pain-scatter the Fungi if at all possible. 2.1) The above means that the "move 3 Acolytes" opening is essentially counter-productive, as your presence shrinks from 4 to 2 Areas by sacrificing vulnerable ones. 2.2) Ninja the 6 or 8 Area spellbook by moving an Acolyte to an enemy Area after they run out of Power and perform a Blood Sacrifice with that Acolyte on the Doom Phase ;-) 3) Whether you start the first round by awakening Shub-Niggurath or play a Power economy - based game, prioritize the Blood Sacrifice. As a matter of fact, if you awaken Shub-Niggurath on the first round, do not hesitate to take it, as it will yield the Doom that you would have gotten through a second Gate, at the very least. Plus, with this strategy, you can Avatar-steal only one Gate on the second round, not two, so you have the extra Power to get that Acolyte back.

@@ilyakraboed You are right on both counts. The rulebook mentions battle examples where Necrophagy adds Pains to your own Units, as well as speceifically mentioning that if there are more battle results than can be assigned, the excess results are ignored.

Since you bring out Shub before Dark Young, doesn't it make sense to get thousand young before red sign? Red sign doesn't do you any good until you have Dark Young; might as well bring them in cheaper.

Necrophagy is great to spread to more areas. So even in your fights you can spread around.

@@ilyakraboed It's a post-battle ability, so you can always bring the ghouls regardless what happened in the battle. If you were involved in a battle, you can use necrofagy to give both sides a pain / ghoul.

Black Goat can Ghroth with few or consolidated fungi and hope to fail. Then they can place a cultist of any faction in BG's own territory. It's a cheap way finish off the share-areas-with-enemy-factions requirement.

You're absolutely right! In my group it became a bad habit early on to say "summon", but at higher levels of play it becomes important whether you're recruiting or summoning so since these early videos I've been trying to be more careful about which word I use.

In my group some guys always "bought" their cultists/monsters. It took a lot of time to convince them to "recruit" Cultist and "summon" monsters. But who cares?! ;)

how did you summon a monster at an uncontrolled gate after using necrophagy? I don't think it says you can summon them like cultists no?

Could anyone inform me about the box size of the other factions (Opener, Sleeper, etc)? I wanna buy one but, since it has to go through some taxes depending on its size, I gotta know how big it is.

Roughly, using a junk ruler, I measured out 12" x 10" x 3.5" or 31cm x 25.6cm x 8.9cm We have an ebay store too so if you care about the weight I could weigh Tcho Tcho or Opener of the Way, I'm still waiting on the others.

2 pounds 8 oz is how much one of the faction boxes weighs, of course each one is going to weigh slightly differently.

Приветствую! Скажи пожалуйста, можно ли переместить упырей с помощью некрофагии в зону, где все фигуры уже получили боли и уходят без доп ран от упырей? В гримуаре написано «сначала переместите их, потом добавьте боли каждой стороне». Можно ли переместить при условии, что все фигуры в зоне и без упырей получили раны. То есть, по сути, упыри накладывают избыточные ранения, которые в общем в игре никак не учитываются, можно ли так сделать, чтобы переместить их в зону или из-за того, что им некого ранить, они не могут туда переместиться? И второй вопрос: можно ли таким образом перемещать упырей в зоны, где есть мои юниты, будут ли на них ранения распределяться, и, как следствие, мои фигуры будут расползаться из той зоны по карте. Вот, к примеру, дерусь я с человеком, у нас остаётся по 2 фигуры в зоне, перед применением результатов боль я кидаю туда упырей, которые ранят мои фигуры и фигуры врага, в результате все фигуры кроме упырей из этой зоны уходят. Так можно или нет?

I Awaken GOO first turn and in the 2nd turn, I start stealing gates. I've ended 2nd round with 3 gates doing that.

I think if you summon GOO second turn you should usually end with 3 gates anyways , because 2nd gate first turn, 3rd gate after you avatar 2nd turn. I think the primary difference is how much damage you do to the other people. Option 1) more power, less damage Build Gate, Summon GOO 2nd turn. 10 power at start of 2nd turn with 2 gates Avatar and steal a gate. end with 3 gates, enemies have 1 less gate Option 2) less power, more damage Summon GOO 8 power at start of 2nd turn with 1 gate steal 2 gates end with 3 gates, enemies have 2 less gates What do people think? I kinda wonder if the power efficient way might be more valuable in a large multiplayer game, the more damage way being more valuable in small 3 player games. The reasoning being that if you can damage the other 2 players in a 3 player game (100% of the other players), then that is more valuable than being able to damage 2 players in a 5 player game (50% of the other players). But I'd love to get some other people's thoughts.

Correct and I think that's why it is viable. You're not just gaining points, you're removing points from others as well. That means they've spent 3 power and gotten nothing out of it. Since any Victory Point system is essentially a race, removing points from someone in front of you is identical to getting points yourself, all other things being equal. So if I can do both, that can be potentially twice as good as simply generating the points directly.

@@GreyWizardInsights Wouldn't summoning GOO in the first turn start your second turn with only 6 power? You lose 2 of the cultists as well as part of the GOO cost. I'm not sure that turn 1 GOO is a good idea, unless that one extra elder sign from having blood sacrifice early is worth the loss of power.

No! That's not for another year. Have you played with any of the neutrals? I love this game and have most of the neutrals but haven't used them at all yet. I enjoy playing with just factions too much still to be bothered.

We have most/all of the neutrals from last year's onslaught, but I've only played with the Azathoth expansion, I feel like the rest of the players are still getting good with the factions (which generally means I'm guaranteed to lose because I spend most of the game coaching people against me, but I'm happy just to have players) and the neutral factions really mix things up. I REALLY want to give Black Goat the Servitors because I think it'll really screw them, but last time the BG player was struggling so I didn't want to slow down his Dark Young. :'(
