Thinking about learning how to wingfoil? Check out this video for some tips and why I like it so much. The unique thing about wingfoiling is that you can completely turn off the power of the wing and just surffoil the wave. I also love that I can do it at spots where I'm not allowed to kitesurf, when it's too gusty to kiteboard, or when the spot is too small to launch your kite.

am an old school surfer and one of the 1st kiteboarders on planet (along with one of first snowboarders as well.... to those of you who know, it was on a burton backhill, with a rubber band for backfoot and a rope attached to front of board). Anyway, enough credentials to me, my point in listing my experience is I wanted to tell you (Annelous) that you have done an excellent job describing on how to wing foil. Bravo! Compliments due for sure.

I liked your turn transitions, especially tacking and just switching over head. I've seen many but the camera angle helped me fully understand and now I just need some wind to go see how well I can execute a tack. I just learned and did 5 successful jibe turns last session as well as riding toeside. Before I'd just ride switch and try changing my feet before the jibe. Never really had much success. Also in my low wind 7-9 mph with 17-21mph gusts I'm using a Gong 9m Superpower wing. Last session with 9-10mph I finally tried my new Duotone Echo 7m and that's when I had success with jibes. So much lighter than the 9m and I liked the boom instead of 6 handles.

Stumbled across your video and I love it, very simple and straight forward and well explain. I am a windsurfer turned kiteboarder and met a guy at the beach yesterday with one of these setups, we chatted and he kindly let me have a go - I didn’t managed to get the board foiling but had no trouble starting of on my knees, standing up, gibing/turning around then heading back towards him and going upwind. I’m very tempted to get involved with the sport for the reasons you outlined at the beginning of this video and I will definitely be subscribing and following your adventures.

Michael Villis that’s awesome, kite foiling is a great way to get into foiling and then the switch to wing foiling will be really easy because you understand how the foil works. Here with East wind I can now go at the inside like with the windsurfers which is really fun, more time on the water doing what we love!

I'm watching this video again and I get something new every time. I'm new into the sport having been just a paddle border. I love your idea of renting stuff but unless you live in a surf town there are no shops and I had to buy all my equipment online. But now I wonder will this wing make surfing so accessible that we might see surf style shops begin to spring up with wings and paddle boards and foils in places like the great lakes? I hope so because that's where I live.
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, yes for sure, I understand. Here we have a lot of surfshops everywhere and it's easy to get your hands on rental gear and even test gear from the latest collections. But I think there will be more and more shops opening at places which are popular for paddle boarding, since it is so accesible for everyone. It's also really fun to just use the wing on a SUP board without foil!

Inspiring to see that it works with a board as small as 33L. I tried it two times with borrowed material and got flying thanks to kitefoil skills, and man it was fun but the 100L sup foil did feel big when flying. I still want a surf sup / foil sup hybrid just for wave riding plus winging, but now I see a foilsurf board is a nice upgrade for winging. Would be nice if both boards work with one foil setup, maybe with multiple Frontwings for different conditions. But I guess I first gotta save money a year or so to afford all of this.
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rocco, that’s awesome you got it so quickly! A hybrid set-up is the best, I’m using set-up for surf foiling and winging, and you can definitely do something similar with a SUP foil. You can have a hydrofoil that works with a SUP and surf foil board, and then use the SUP in lighter wind. A shorter SUP will also give you some more performance than a really big wide one. What is funny is that now I’m used to a small board the bigger board actually got harder for me, I taught a lesson the other day and was struggling because I miss the direct feeling of the small board.

Hey Lous, top video hoor. Top!
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 4 жыл бұрын
@wimperelly
@wimperelly 4 жыл бұрын
Grtz

Wow looks so fun and easy. Less equipment than kiting or windsurfing. Also, looks very safe except maybe the sharp hydrofoil wing. One day I will try this.
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 4 жыл бұрын
trexinvert yes true, and it feels really free on the water! It is very safe, when there is a big gust you can simply let go and you’re not attached like in kiteboarding. These foils are big and not that sharp but the most important is a slow progression and first master the basics before learning things like jibes. If you take it slow you won’t get hurt, I still never fell on the foil:)
@trexinvert
@trexinvert 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, doesn't you hands/wrist/arm get tired? Perhaps some kind of harness device might be used in the near future? Keep on.
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 4 жыл бұрын
Haha good question. In the beginning my under arms were getting tired because I’m not using them so much with kiteboarding but now I can ride for 3 hours without getting tired. I personally would never want to put a harness, I love the freedom of movement without. I know there is people that have put some kind of harness line on the wing, but the way I’m riding it’s not necessary. I just do 1 or 2 racks upwind, catch a wave all the way to the beach and go back upwind. So for that I’m switching all the time to using my arms to using my legs for pumping :) it’s an amazing ‘workout’ at the same time
@trexinvert
@trexinvert 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like on a foil board you don't need constant power. Like skateboarding on a street. You kick to get going and then you just "cruise" for a little bit. Also, during board pumping the wing sail action looks like it is "both" push/pull. When you pull on the sail, you can lift your body up to help board rise up. Then during the board diving stroke you can push against the wing sail to make your body go down. That's my guess. Also, if you feel like falling you can quickly position the wing sail over your head(apex) and lift yourself straight up. You can't easily do that with a kite.

Great video, thank you for that. I know wings come in different sizes depending on wind speed but how much does one's weight factor into it? I am about 68 kgs. Would a 5m wing be too much to handle?
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! How is the wind at your homespot most of the time? A 5m will not be too much to handle, I'm 60kg and using a 5m a lot. But it does also depend on the wind you get, if that is between 15-25 knots a 5m will be a good choice. You might be a big powered in the high end but being powered helps a lot with the learning curve.

Hi there I want to start wing surfing and would like some advice on the foil to use.. I want to go on the north sea and have wind and kitesurf experience. With my wetsuit on I would weigh around 100 kg though... ;-) So would a hi rise varial size L be big enough for me? And what about the mast length? What would be recommended? Thanks in advance for your reply!
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, That's awesome! The Varial large is perfect. Do you already have some foiling experience in kiteboarding or windsurfing? The 60cm mast is perfect for learning and it also makes it easier to get going when it's shallow compared to a 85cm mast. When you go out in the North Sea there might be some sand bars to cross with low tide, there a shorter mast will be useful too. The longer mast will only be better when there is big swell, which aren't the conditions you will go out in in the beginning!

Hi Jeff, good question! If you’re looking to do it in very light wind you need to get a board with a lot of volume and a very big hydrofoil. That makes the biggest difference in the low-end. My set up is a surf foil set up, but if you’re looking to do it in light wind you need to look at getting a SUP foil set up. So a board with more liters than your body weight and a foil probably around 1800 cm2. Let me know if you have more questions.

Dank je wel! Video is well done. Gefeliciteerd! We usually go to Wijk aan Zee near Beverwijk. That's our hometown. Now we're in NY and Lake Ontario will be my water. I am going to be getting a new kit, and I think I want windows in the wing. I do not have a shop nearby, so I think I'll need to buy a board. I've been told that around 6 feet and 120 liters (I'm 87kg.). I'm also thinking high aspect foil, like 2400 or so. Any thoughts on equipment for beginners? I am an experienced paddle boarder though.

That's awesome, at Cabrinha.com we have the X-Fly which is a great board to learn how to wing on but at the same time really progressive. It's also a SUP foil board at the same time so you can use it for both sports. If you have a high aspect wing you don't actually need such a big surface. So you can easily try a bit smaller front wing. For our new Mantis wing you can choose the wing with the windows, that's better for on lakes. I mostly ride the ocean and I don't need the windows :)

Is it essential to be able to pump the board? I’ve got one fixed knee (does not bend at all) but would love to give wingfoiling a try. (I am able to windsurf and windfoil.)
@AnnelousLammerts

Awesome that you want to give wingfoiling a try even though you have a fixed knee! You don't need to be able to pump the board if you have enough power in the wing and the right gear (a foil with enough surface area and a board with enough volume). If you are able to windsurf and windfoil you will probably progress quickly! Have fun and let me know how it went :)

@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 7 ай бұрын
Hi Martin, that’s a good question. It’s definitely a tricky one for me as well. If you look closely you see I’m wearing neoprene open palm mittens. They protect your hands against the wind chill and you can choose to put your hands completely in, or just have them cover them a bit. On the coldest days I wear 3mm neoprene gloves with pre formed fingers, and I take regular brakes sitting in the board to rest the forearms. You get more used to it, but almost all winter I still ride with the open palm mittens. They’re just not ideal in a case of having to swim back, which is important to keep in mind for safety reasons!

Good video. Thank you. Looking for words of wisdom on possibly a wing foil. I'm a long time "decades" long boarder to give real I idea what use/enjoy i have/had since 1993 a equipe xr2 an a phantom 377 since 2015 that like 377 better with it's advantages. Use 8.5 ezzy lions on both for decades with my local given conditions of 10-20 knots when I can sail June to September. I'm getting old 58 having a harder time transporting dealing with all on water with age becoming a issue. I'm 5.7 tall 170 lb like being able to hook into my harness enjoy the ride 10-20 knots. I'm looking for a long board alternative to keep me smiling on the water for many more years that I can transport an physically be able to enjoy. Wings to me seem like they would be physically demanding in comparison to be able to hook in the harness in comparison to longboarding in similar weather. Please give words of wisdom wing.. or...👍👎
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! You sound really passionate! So if I understand correctly you've been mainly windsurfing right? Wingfoiling is definitely a lot less physically demanding than windsurfing when the conditions are easy. On flat water with the right gear for the wind you get going really fast. In big waves and with a lot of current it can be a bit heavier, but that's the same as with windsurfing. A friend of me is about the same age and is only wingfoiling right now, and doing 3h sessions!! I would say, go for it!! You'll love it!

Bas Peterse it is way easier than a lot of people think, especially with the right gear. It is not necessary to first learn how to kite foil. With wingfoiling we use bigger foils which are more stable and actually make it easier than kitefoiling

There actually is a Foil spot on the most northern part of the Brouwersdam beach. It’s the only place where the water is deep straight with all tides. There are bouys showing where to enter and exit the spot, but when it’s this cold there is no one on the beach so it doesn’t matter where you enter and exit!

This is a total nubie question, but do you always have to keep the leading edge upwind? I kept thinking that I would always point the leading edge in the direction I wanted to go. When going upwind this tended to work. But when I was trying to go downwind the wing kept wanting to flip into the ground. Could you do a video on how the wing should be with respect to going upwind vs downwind?
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 4 жыл бұрын
Yes good question, I will try to film it when the lockdown has finished. I understand what you mean when you go down wind and the wind flips touches the ground. You can go pretty straight downwind but then you have to really keep your front arm high (closest to the LE) and long and your back arm short and in front of you with the middle strut just above the water.

What is the advantage of a small board with foiling? Looks like hard work & less safety with a tiny board but what do you gain?
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 3 жыл бұрын
A small board is very reactive. Cabrinha has now launched small boards with a lot of volume, for example the macro, 5’0 so shorter but 78L. Which gives you the advantage of volume for an easy start and a better low end but at the same time a very maneuverable board and light feeling. I now use a 4’10 autopilot with 40L which is perfect for me, I’m 60kg and don’t need more volume than that, and I can use the autopilot for kite foil and surf foil too.
