A good front wing foil will get you upwind a lot more easily too.

Correct, gear plays an important role in upwind performance. Also the length of the mast and type of wing that you are using. But on all gear, being able to put more load thanks to the harness will help with your angle upwind.

Good point! :) It was my first session, and my wing has different attachment points so I just started there and later moved them back. Definitely better power distribution with the mount more backwards.

Great video, thank you. I have a question. How do you manage forearm fatique in cold weather. My arms get so tired after like 20 min., so i have to stop. What gloves woukd you recommend? I saw you wearing no gloves!? Overall any tricks how to avoid forearm fatique? Thank you
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 7 ай бұрын
Hi Martin, that’s a good question. It’s definitely a tricky one for me as well. If you look closely you see I’m wearing neoprene open palm mittens. They protect your hands against the wind chill and you can choose to put your hands completely in, or just have them cover them a bit. On the coldest days I wear 3mm neoprene gloves with pre formed fingers, and I take regular brakes sitting in the board to rest the forearms. You get more used to it, but almost all winter I still ride with the open palm mittens. They’re just not ideal in a case of having to swim back, which is important to keep in mind for safety reasons!

Great video about gybing. I'm entering into my gybe whilst flying now so I just have to figure out the exit... I believe by watching you that being and staying centred (by not moving the feet) is key. I'm a windsurfer and snowboarder and there are so many skill transfers between the 3 sports... that's very interesting. Also, is this video on lac d'Annecy, au milieu pres de de Menthon St Bernard? Et du coup le wingfoiling passe bien sur le lac l'ete? Assez de vent? Merci

@annelous This is one of the best videos I've seen for tacking. I came to the same conclusions as I developed my easiest technique. I would add that releasing the wing up overhead tends to initiate the turn upwind, which is great because as you say you don't want to turn up into the wind with any power in your wing. I would also stress to shift your eyes to the upwind horizon as start the tack and keep your primary awareness on the foil to carve hard enough into the wind to bring the board back underneath and downwind of you in the new direction before you power up your wing.

Ils getting cold by the belgium border and neoprene gloves are awesome for warmth but super hard on hands and forearms! I had to stop riding because I could not hold the wing anymore after à short while. Harness seems like a good solution. Any other solution to cramps due to gloves ?

Suggestion ... video about starting to turn, in taxi mode but powered. Most video, if so, show turning when on your knees or when standing up but stationary turning the board with your feet a d then powering up again. Most jump to turns when already being able to be on foil. Also most only show the jibe but when beginner you don't want to loose ground each time when turning. Lucky I now manage to go upwind (most of the time) but when I fall and need to get back on the board, find balance, flip over the wing, and by doing so I loose too much ground.

Great video. I've been using a harness for some time and love it, I think it significantly increases time on the water, and upwind is so much easier. I prefer a hook which you can push to the side along the harness strap rather than the metal bar type.

@Annelous Thanks for the tips, I might be missing the tip for "wait to turn until wing is in neutral". I'm going to try it today. My biggest problem is feeling the backward drag on the wing which slows me down. Even on the beach practicing with just the wing I felt a lot of drag. This was with my 5m in about 20-25 kts. I'll try with the 4m today to see if it helps. I am currently on a 1300cm foil

I recommend using the smallest wing that you can that allows you to have good speed. Ideally your set up makes it easy to go faster than the true wind and take that speed into the turn. Have fun!

I was wondering when a harness would start becoming standard for the wingfoil. I can only imagine many riders starting to get "wrist cramps" from aggressive riding or after long hours in the water. I used to windsurf and when I was at an intermediate level I "resisted" using a harness, because I enjoyed the physical exertion of my arms and shoulders against the wind. Until, I started to get "cramps". Game over. To be a mile away from shore with hands that don't work is scary.
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! For the long sessions it makes a huge difference. It's still not as heavy as windsurfing, since we're up on the foil, but there were times that I had to sit down for a moment and give my arms some rest.

Thx for your tutorial, hopefully I nail the tack tomorrow.. one point of improvement for your vid is about the sound quality.. for me the sound of the wind and waves are too loud to hear your explanation clearly, maybe if gets better with a small microphone. Great tutorial. I've now cracked tacking both ways because of 3 key things you said. - pushing the strut away, throwing the wing early and learning on the preferred stance. This the key and no other videos mention pushing the strut away from you.

Some others do mention pushing the strut away. Just not explicitly stating and showing both hands staying on the handles until horizontal. But I agree this is the best tack video so far (Jan 2023).

Is it essential to be able to pump the board? I’ve got one fixed knee (does not bend at all) but would love to give wingfoiling a try. (I am able to windsurf and windfoil.)
@AnnelousLammerts
@AnnelousLammerts 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome that you want to give wingfoiling a try even though you have a fixed knee! You don't need to be able to pump the board if you have enough power in the wing and the right gear (a foil with enough surface area and a board with enough volume). If you are able to windsurf and windfoil you will probably progress quickly! Have fun and let me know how it went :)
