Check out this video for a complete walkthrough on how to winterize your RV, travel trailer, camper, 5th wheel, or motorhome. When the leaves start to change up here in Michigan I know I have a few main preparations to make for the coming winter. One of these is to get the travel trailer ready for some cold weather and snow. In this video I go through that process step by step and offer some pointers and advise for protecting the exterior, water system, and preventing mice from invading!
When we purchased this trailer used one of the first repairs I had to make was to correct some damage from the previous owner not winterizing the water system properly. The 'p' trap on the bathroom sink had cracked from freezing and it was a pain to repair. With different types of pipe (ABS,CPVC, and PVC used in this trailer it took a few trips to the hardware store to get the random parts that were needed. This was a lot of work that could have been avoided with a proper winterization the year prior. I hope that this video can help someone out and help prevent extra repairs before the camping season begins next year!

Hi Terry... I have been going nuts with watching winterizing videos.. I found yours and it was perfect. Wish I had found it first. Yours was so easy to follow and did not have all the nonsense we don't need to know. We are retired and this is our first Trailer. Thanks again from Iowa. God Bless

That is a great video. Thanks for the clear and easily understood information. I have only 1 thing to add on the antifreeze topic. Many trailers have a hot and cold drain port under the back corner the close to the bumper. It can be tricky to loosen the plug when the system is under full pressure. I would recommend starting with no pressure, opening 1 plug, and turning on the pump only until you see the pink. This requires a helper. Then reply and repeat it on the second line. I hope this helps.

Your video is well done. Its not hard, done in less time than it takes to pull it to a RV center and saves you $100.00. Antifreeze is less than $10.00. Thank you.

My husband and I consider ourselves Not So Handy, but we bought a use RV this summer and have been learning all about it and how to take care of it via youtube. Your video was the most simple and easy to follow of all the videos we looked at regarding winterization. We were hoping you had another video regarding De-Winterization so we will know what to do come spring. Thank you again!

Thanks for the kind words. I have not done a de-winterization video but maybe I should this spring. Basically the only thing to do is drain out all the antifreeze and rinse the system out with water a few times by filling and draining. I also like to add a few cap fulls of bleach to the water tank and run it through the system with a full tank of water as well. Hope that gets you started!

Another great thing to use to deter mice is Irish Spring Soap,mice hate the stuff plus it makes things smell great,we use it in farm equipment to keep them out of the cabs and engine compartments and to exorb smoke smells.

I learned this from my teacher

Absolutely LOVE the idea of putting the Antifreeze into the fresh water tank and pumping it thru the system like that. I would NOT have thought of that. I am doing my first winterization this year and was not looking forward to disconnecting hoses from the pump. Thanks for the tip.

This was awesome! I don't have a shut off valve for my hot water heater so I have to reconnect my hoses every year, wish I had something easier. I have a trailer much like yours just smaller. I agree that it has been a great investment, $5,000 for a used trailer that really has been pretty easy to learn. Your video was great and I will share it with my friends who are also new to the camper/RV world. Thanks again. Rita

Something I didn't catch but may be useful for those that don't know. Be sure the anti-freeze is "potable". While it may not be something you want to drink; it's pretty important to be sure it's something that won't harm you if someone happens to. I also installed a siphon hose at my bypass valve. It stays permanently installed so I don't have to take apart water lines every year and all I need to do is put the hose in the gallon of anti-freeze, turn on the pump and run it through. I can get it completely done with less than one gallon. Something you didn't mention was covering your camper. I covered mine until the wind destroyed my $300 cover. I then decided to not cover it for a couple of years. That was a huge mistake. I just replaced 4 tires, had to re-caulk nearly everything on my roof, replace vent covers from sun damage, and not to mention it took me nearly a day to wash it for our 1st trip out. I can assure you it cost me several hundred dollars more to fix the damage of NOT covering above the cost of a cover. A tip for buying a new cover is to either shop for one in late winter or spring. Everyone is shopping for them in the fall and the prices will be the highest.

Camped for 20 years in Wisconsin (it gets cold around here!). We used a compressor to blow the lines out and never had an issue with lines freezing! The only year we did have a problem was the year we inadvertently locked a chippy inside a storage area. The little squirt decided he wanted better accommodations and chewed his way thru and past a bathroom pipe to access the trailer. Needless to say the pipe had to be replaced! By the way, there were fabric sheets all over the trailer!

One thing that I do as well is winterize the awning(s). Prior to the cold weather and temperature fluctuation it is important to open the awning and clean the material. Then allow the awning to stay open for a day or two to allow it to air dry or sun dry prior to storage. If the last time you used your awning the weather was rainy or wet, then it is really helpful to open and dry the awning soon after the camping trip and allow the material to dry, even in the spring or summer when the weather is warm. Storing a wet awning can cause mold and or discoloration and stains on the material depending on the material. Also, a little Vaseline on the rollers prevents corrosion and helps keep the awning easy to operate. Also, I noticed that some comments were made about using the compressor method to winterize the plumbing. This method does work, however if a person chooses to use this method, then they need to understand that high pressure in a system with water in the lines can cause a rupture or a plumbing fitting to burst. These lines are only plastic in most cases with many fittings being pressure fittings. Using high air pressure in a closed system can cause severe problems and expense. Having a significant amount of water in the lines can create a significant back pressure and trapped energy.

Great video, never thought about dryer sheets in place of mothballs must be the chemicals in the sheets, we use No.4 steel wool to fill holes, mice seem to not like steel wool, that is the only tip I have... We have spiders and snakes which also take up residence in campers, the attic you name it down here in the winter; mothballs work for them I believe I will try the dryer sheets for a change... Have a Blessed one.

Thanks for the video..... I've seen on other winterizing videos that they did NOT pour antifreeze into the fresh water tank. Instead, they swapped the fresh water hook-up for the antifreeze hook-up. You described why you choose to pour antifreeze into the tank, but does that (pouring antifreeze into the tank) then require a flushing of the fresh water tank when you de-winterize your TT?? Not pouring the antifreeze into the tank would eliminate the need to flush the fresh water tank in the spring. Thanks for the input/feedback.
@SSLFamilyDad

+carmine faro yes, in spring I fill the tank with water then run it through the system to flush out the antifreeze. Then do a standard water system sanitize just like I would do anyway with bleach. Fill and drain several times

For those that use a battery on your camper like I do, I recommend using a battery tender over the winter to keep your battery charged. I use the Battery Tender Jr. which was $25.00 and well worth it. I even use it between camping trips. The only other thing that I do that was not mentioned is to keep the ceiling vent in the bathroom open about an inch. I have a vent cover so I don't worry about water getting in and it is good to have air movement. I keep the bathroom door open, of course.

If you were to apply that same concept (draining the tank) to the lines, it would replace the water in the lines with air so they couldn't freeze. (A few drips won't expand enough to cause the water system to break). Then you won't have to do all that de-winterizing flushing and sanitizing, or put chemicals into your fresh water system, or pay for it.

This is the most onformative video on KZfaq for winterization. It is so helpful and easy. It's our first time to do this and you're easy to understand. We have a washer and dryer in our trailer. Instructions I have found says to pour 1/2 a gal in the washer and let it run for 20 seconds on rinse spin and shut it off. Do you know is it very important to discontect the water lines to the machine. They are nearly impossible to get to. Or would it work to run the machine from the fresh water tank with antifreeze in it so the washer water lines get pink in them too?
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 7 жыл бұрын
I have not winterized a washer and dryer in one but I would assume that if you just run it with the anti-freeze in the tank until you see some in the washer you should be fine, make sure to run the rinse so some gets through tot he drain as well

Thanks for creating the video. It is straightforward and easy to follow., We live in Eastern North Carolina and plan to take the camper down to Florida for January and February.. There is a chance we might get below freezing temperatures during December and also in March when we return but it would be unusual for the temperature to stay below freezing during those months for more than 24 hours. We are wondering if we should just drain the water system or should we go ahead and drain it and also add the antifreeze.
@SSLFamilyDad

that is your call, if it stays well below freezing over night it could freeze and crack the p traps or the water lines. To be safe I would add the antifreeze

Very helpful. We are winterizing for the first time at age of mid 50. Just upgraded from 25 years of pop up. We have the ability to pump directly from the antifreeze jug, used 2 gallons. I really liked the idea of getting one side up, it helped drain everything. Question, I did not have to use the fresh water to run the anti freeze. Does the fresh tank need any antifreeze? Thanks for your efforts and attitude. blessings to you and yours.

As long as you make sure it is as close to empty as you can get you should be ok. It won't hurt to just pour a little but in there if you want to be safe though. Just have to sanitize the whole system come spring anyway. You'll enjoy having the travel trailer over that popup!

I love how you left a Bible verse at the end!!!! What do you recommend for the top during Minnesota outdoor storage? Some say tarp, some say shrink wrap, some say always store it inside, and yet others say you really don't need to do anything because it is a 2017 model (the roofs are so well built these days).
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 7 жыл бұрын
it will never hurt you to cover it in some fashion to keep the sun and water off the roof. Using a tarp is cheapest, shrink wrap is probably best and/or keeping it inside. I would disagree that it won't do some damage over time if left outside every winter year over year even if it is well built!

@SSLFamilyDad

It is best if it is covered if you want the roof to last the longest but it will not hurt it to leave it out for a few years during the winter. Just check the roofing for leaks/cracks in the sealant around vents and other protrusions in the spring

@SSLFamilyDad

+Laura Rash Drain the antifreeze out ( I save mine in jugs for next year) and then fill the tanks with water. Let it site for an hour or two then drain it all out. Next fill the tank and add some bleach. Run it through all the faucets and shower and then let it it overnight (don't add too much bleach, just a few capfuls. Drain the tank again. Then fill with fresh water and drain once or twice to ensure they are clean. It sounds like a lot but honestly very little actual touch time.

They do require maintenance but I recommend creating a check list for things like this and it will make it a lot easier. It really isn't a lot of work. Wintering my trailer, which includes pumping anti-freeze through all the lines, cleaning and sealing the rubber roof, protecting the slide out seals (if your trailer has a slide out) cleaning and protecting the awning, and everything else takes about a day. Most people I know who have trailers don't go through the process I do but it gets me out of the house and I go over almost every square inch of the trailer to make sure nothing either needs to be repaired or replaced. I do it again in the Spring to make sure I am ready for camping. I know you will have a blast with a camper. We have met some great people doing it and I know you will too.

What about moisture inside the trailer. We use crystal packs from Dollar store and hanging bags from Lee Valley (lava rock) and some people put out bowls of cat litter. Prevents the musty smell when you open up in Spring. Thank you for your video.

That is a great ideas also, since it is so cold here throughout the winter the air is pretty dry so we don't have much issues with moisture. But if you do, those ideas sound great to me!

It is our first year RVing. So this is the first time I will be winterizing and you have some ideas I like. Specifically I like the idea of using the fresh water tank instead of accessing the pump. Most other videos instruct me to access the pump. One question I have is do you think blowing out the lines with compressed air is necessary? BTW I use RV antifreeze because it doesn't have the ethylene glycol that is poisonous to ingest like normal antifreeze has. In fact you could theoretically drink it straight out of the jug however I can think of many other things I would rather drink! :)
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 8 жыл бұрын
+Kris K lol, yes I am using RV antifreeze also, you should never ever ever put automotive antifreeze in your RV, very bad:) I do not think that using compressed air to blow out the water lines is needed. Just make sure to get some antifreeze in all of the lines and the drains and you should be fine. Good luck and have fun in that new RV!

My Parents has a 1995 rainbow travel trailer they bought it new.They used it maybe 10 times from now The last time they used it water was coming from the middle of the floor.is there pipes under there.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 9 жыл бұрын
+David Gurrola There very well may be, and I would assume there are since water has to be coming from somewhere:) That might be a hard to get to repair but you could try to cut out and repair the floor, or try and unhook the water line (it is probably flexible plastic) from both ends and pull it out from under the cupboards

So what if I can't find the water diversion valve for the water heater? Will it hurt it if I run anti-freeze through the water heater?

your camper looks almost identical to my1990 camper which I bought as a salvage (needed a new roof so with that done I have it parked on some land in the mountains so I need to do all my winterizing, we basically use it to dry camp but have been manually filling water tank and filling sink with jugs of water. how can I move antifreeze through the system without having the pump working?

So I did the antifreeze into the fresh water tank to fill the lines ( 4 gallons )but could not get it to pump. I added straight water to the tank for a few minutes and then It pumped fine. I used 4 gallons last year and it worked fine. Any thoughts ?

could have just been the slope of the trailer, if it is leaning to one side the water in the tank may not have been covering the pump inlet

Why does dryer sheets prevent mice?
@joanrec4167
@joanrec4167 7 жыл бұрын
please answer. i'd like to know too. we tried using them in our cottage in the thousand islands and peppermint oil seemed to work but the dryer sheets didn't. do i need to get a certain kind? we put them all over the cottage. in the drawers in the spring, there were nuts and mice dirt along with all the towels chewed up. guess they didn't work for us.

I believe it is the smell, similar to moth balls. it may not work for certain mice or maybe rats but it has worked for ours for several years with not a single mouse dropping. We even left cereal and other food in the cupboards this last year.

I know this is a couple of years since you posted your comment. I like to dump 4-5 bags of ice cubes in the toilet when the black tank is empty just prior to going on a trip. The ice cubes roll and scrub around in the tank with the trailer movement and break any stuck on deposits from the interior surfaces and help clean the tank. The ice cubes melt and then drain during the next dump and take all the loose deposits that may have been stuck on the surfaces of the tank. If there is/are deposit(s) stuck on the surface of the tank they are usually just under the toilet opening and at times may create a problem to completely flush the toilet. Also, it is important to only use RV toilet paper in the toilet and also to use an RV approved chemical solution in the tank when there is waste in the tank. The solution helps breakdown the waste and keeps the interior surfaces from deposit formations.

So when you winterize your RV does that mean you don't use the sink and showers any more until spring?
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 8 жыл бұрын
+JohnnyTango111 that is correct, can't use it here in the cold all winter. These types of trailers would not be good in Alaska. Everything would freeze underneath so if you were up there and it were below zero at all you would ve in trouble

+JohnnyTango111 i am not sure about that. It is not below freezing all year everywhere in alaska but if you are there in the winter you will need a special setup
