Hey Scott ... I can't thank you enough man! I just took delivery of my new Catalina Kennedy and needed an "electrician" to hook it up. However, where I live in Eastern NC, very few are available and they are booked weeks out. I searched the subject and found your YT video and bam!! ... did it myself and saved lots of money. (Yes, I watched your video several times and referenced it throughout the project. Dude...it's folks like you that make KZfaq so successful and make folks like me look like pros. Great job! Excellent step by step details as an industrial maintenance electrician some people get confused about the white wire being called a common VS a neutral when the white wire is carrying the unbalanced load in a circuit like 220V, 480V it's a neutral DC voltage its a common, but I get what he's saying, but not D.I.Y.'s 😊

In my area the shut off box is supposed to be above 18" from the ground and between 6 feet to 15 feet from the tub. A local electrician quoted $4,500 (4/2024) to do the hook up. I bought all the parts for $700 and did it myself in a day.

Question. So I'm in the middle of connecting a 220/240 volt Spa from a Pentair Intellicenter Sub Panel like your doing in this video. The breaker at the Intellicenter is a 60amp NON-GFCI breaker. So I just need the 1 60amp GFCI spa disconnect near the spa and that is fine correct?

Looks like you converted from a 110V plug-and-play to a 220V hard-wired? Don't you need a line-of-sight maintenance disconnect greater than 5 feet away from water? I guess the breaker can be considered a proper disconnect, but this looks closer than 5 feet. Code violation?

You will also need a different Breaker package... You will need to use #6 from the Main panel to the Sub panel,,.In the Sub you will use the required breaker for a Hot Spring the use #8 from the GFCI in the Sub to the Hot Tub... @@spaman5440 Yes it makes good sense - actually all of what you've replied with is planned for the install: 4 wire #6 AWG from main to sub in metal conduit, and 4 wire #8 AWG from sub's GFCI in sealtight to spa. Nothing is needed.... The hole that was cut in the side of the Hot Tub is just one size larger then the seal tight. You can also use a hole saw that is the same size as the seal tight if you want. What's your take on downsizing the neutral wire. Tip for you also. After doing hundreds of panels here in Chicagoland (solid wire) I found it best to go back and give all lugs and breaker screws a check. Wow. Great video. Thanks. Quick question: I have builder-run spa wiring. A black, red, white and ground wire run from a GFI 220V 30A ganged breaker in the box. All my spa equipment is high amp (e.g. 10A) 120V: pump, heater, etc. Can I wire the outlets to split the red and black circuits and have the return be the same white in both and have the GFI work properly? That is, the red/white pair and the black/white pair each have equipment on them, and both circuits are protected by the ganged GFI 220 breaker in the panel? It would seem to work properly--since no current is lost to ground. All of it balances back to the neutral in the breaker. Works???

Scott, amazing video. Thank you for sharing. I’m not close, otherwise I would reach out to your shop. We had an electrician pre-wire from a 50 amp GFCI breaker to our future spa 40 feet away. Now that we have the spa I’m trying to hook up the wiring. There is no disconnect close to the spa, so planning on adding a disconnect. Do I need an AC style disconnect or a GFCI breaker disconnect in the location close to the spa? Also, the electrician ran number six hot wires, number eight neutral, and number 10 ground. Based on your info, should I run the last 20 feet with all number six or do I need to replace all of the number eight and number 10 wires? Thank you in advance for any guidance.

The electrician need to go back and rewire with #6 THHN or THWN wire on all four wires (the smaller Neutral and Ground over time could cause the GFCI not to work properly) A/C style disconnect should not be used for a hot tub .Use a GFCI in the Main panel or in the Sub panel. Hot tub calls for 60A breaker, 6# wire. How far can I run that wire from main to sub before I lose too much power?? Found one chart that says 188ft? And to clarify - I would run 60A out of the main and 60A GFCI out of the sub - or does that wire run necessitate a larger breaker out of the main?

It will work but it won’t be as safe and may not be to code. Is your main panel within site of the tub or is it around a corner? If someone needed to immediately turn off power to the tub would they be able to find the breaker in a main panel as easily/intuitively as turning off in a sub panel? These are the safety questions you should be asking.

The neutral (white wire) that feeds the spa from the disconnect, must be connected to the gfci breaker, not to the neutral bar, otherwise the gfci will not work correctly, most likely will trip. Also make sure that the ground wires (green or bare copper) are not in the neutral bar but in the ground bar, neutral and ground should always be in separate bars in sub-panels

While returning empty handed from three hour drive to buy panel (that turned out to be another 4 wire) to my surprise I get a direct call from Scott with his full understanding of our circumstance with 50 amp, 30/20 split two breaker sub panels for 6 wire systems being unavailable, or at least very hard to find. Within minutes Scott provided clear, detailed, concise instruction that I feel confident will function safely and well. -At main install 50amp GFCI breaker -Run #6 wire to sub panel, NOT #8 -Within weather resistant sub panel use 30amp & 20amp standard breakers After months of seeking correct sub panel, paying for assistance, being stood up by two electricians, another coming to estimate yet not providing one, a general contractor working outside scope of license, poorly installing wrong sub panel and putting shovel through wire of overall grounding system, I will cautiously yet confidently be handling this myself. Update to come. 👍

@@amilias1000 Interesting...Well I can tell from that that the manufacture has probably never had to go out on a service call. 8/3 is Roman with an undersized ground.. Can ground wire be undersized? With too-small a ground wire, the breaker cannot magnetic-trip because it cannot flow enough current to hit 10x, because of the too-high resistance of the wire. And as you can guess, that's trouble. Romax wiring has been the problem in so many Hot Tubs Ive lost count ..Thats just my two cents worth. Thanks for Watching & SUBSCRIBING

@KitchenerLeslie2
@KitchenerLeslie2 2 жыл бұрын
You might have to add a ground bar. The bar you use for the neutral should be isolated from the panel. Usually by plastic spacers. The ground bar should be mounted directly to the metal panel and the two bars should not be connected. If something goes wrong with your hookup the neutral could become hot. If you have the ground hooked up to the neutral dangerous surfaces and the water could become hot.
