Hi, great video. Thanks for sharing. I got a Samsung wall double oven. The Electrical cord the store gave me has 3 wires only. Hot, neutral and hot. The oven has black, white and nothing on the red spot. This means the oven works on a 110 volts with a 40 amps braker and wire#8?

What does the oven installation manual state for the required electrical circuit? Or - take a look at the nameplate on the oven, typically found inside the door, what does the electrical specifications state. The specifications provided by the appliance is how we determine the circuit requirement, because all ovens are not the same.

Refer to the Installation Manual for the specific oven that you have. If a dedicated neutral wire is required then you may not do this, however check to see if the manual states that the neutral and ground may be bonded together, if so then follow the instructions found in the manual.

Hi Mario - If the circuit has 4 wires then a 4wire outlet and 4wire cord should be installed. This will provide the separate neutral and ground connections that your stove requires, and this will clear the error code that the stove is now displaying. Enjoy your stove!

Can I run the wire through a conduit from the main panel to the outlet on the wall surface? The old house has something like shiplap wall covering on the inside walls. The ceilings are 10ff high and the area is to low to the ground to access it from the crawl space. Searched dozens of videos, this was the first that shows what I have in my 35 year old home. I have the 2 wires with the ground wire only for the oven. Red and black with a cooper ground. No white neutral wire at all. I presume it still wires the same as in the later part of your video. If I understand correctly, the ground becomes the neutral and the green ground to the oven attached separately? Btw, there is no plug in my application. It is directly wired into a 4 gang box. Does this change anything? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician 2 жыл бұрын
The circuit wiring for the oven or range should be verified and then labeled, especially if the white wire is in fact a power wire of the 240volt circuit, then for example it should be marked as red. If your oven or range does not have a separate neutral wire then the circuit will be OK to wire. However if the oven or range does have a separate neutral wire then you will need to look in the owners manual for the specific electrical requirements and the wiring instructions for the wire connections.

The 6/3 Romex is correct and is used in a typical installation for the circuit, however the wiring between the range and the four prong outlet should be made with an approved Range Cord. The issue is that a free standing range needs to have a cord so that the range may be unplugged.

So if you're wiring a newer 4 prong oven plug to an old 3 prong outlet, from the diagram that the ground connector gets ran to the middle white neutral wire? How can a ground be piggybacked off a neutral?
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician Жыл бұрын
A ground cannot be piggybacked off a neutral, the two must remain separate. Consult the installation manual for your specific oven to see if it requires a 4-wire circuit (separate neutral and separate ground) and any wiring information the manufacturer requires for your oven.

The ground strap was on the ground and neutral terminal when I removed the 4 prong plug. Isn't the ground strap supposed to be removed and not attached to the neutral when you have a 4 prong plug? @@summerforever6736 it worked fine for a couple of months then my wife cleaned the oven, smacked the heating element pretty good and it stopped working, it would get red hot at one spot right as it comes into the oven from the back oven wall. The stove top works fine and we have a second oven for baking. The range was used, my father in law wanted to help out and grabbed us one before I could get a new one. I haven't checked the panel for the neutral and ground to be bonded yet. I will now. What do you think? If it isn't bonded at the panel I'd think there would be some snap, crackle, pop instantly when I turned it on for the first time? My wife attempted to try the oven again and worked for a couple days, she said she heard it pop (didn't trip the breaker) and stopped working, instantly shut it off and haven't used it since but the stove top burners (not gas) still work fine. I assumed it was the "failed" heating element acting up. They're pretty cheap so I'll probably change that unless you think it's a wiring issue and not the element.

It will depend on the stove that you have and the electrical specifications as mentioned in the installation manual of your stove.

Can I install 4 wired range to 3 wires power source wire? If yes, how?
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician Жыл бұрын
A 4wire range typically requires a 4wire power source (3 insulated wires and a ground wire), unless your range installation manual states otherwise and provides the method of alternative wiring. Some do, some do not - it depends on which range you have.

Does an electric range need to be away from the wall, like a fridge needs air circulation??
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician 2 жыл бұрын
Great question Ginger. A typical range does not need to be away from the wall, it may be flush against the wall unless your specific range states otherwise.

Hello can i add a #8 to # 6 wire for my stove? The original wire was #6 but due to move the location of the stove had to add some more wire but got #8 does this affect the voltage thanks
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician 2 жыл бұрын
No because the #8 wire is smaller than #6, therefore it should not be used as we need to maintain the same wire size to ensure the circuit integrity and safety.

hi friend, can I use an electricity monitor between our cooktop range & the electricity wires? we have ariston elect cooktop range (2 burners) in our condo It's hardwired to electricity wires (no wall socket) We'd like to monitor the kw consumed by the range I saw an electricity monitor (V, Amp & KW) online which has 2 connectors on top & 2 at bottom, my question: if I install the device between the electricity feed wire (lines in) & the cook range (line out), will it work & also give us the kw read-out? the monitor device is advertised to connect to the fuse-box. Do u have any alternative solution? Thank you 🙏
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician Жыл бұрын
Typically a 240volt circuit is monitored at the panel. There are KW usage monitors available for 120volt plug in devices, but that would not work for your application.

You show three wires all green for the older home then when you show installation you show three different color wires?? Also on my stove the ground isn't connected to the three wires it's off to the side on the stove?
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician Жыл бұрын
The wire colors shown are an example of a typical installation, however the wire colors for the ground may be bare as you mention depending on the age of the home and circuit wiring, and ground wire bonding may be made to the metal frame of the range depending on the specific range that you have.

@Ask-The-Electrician If I am hooking up a 50amp welder circuit 3 prong 6-50r receptacle. i bought some 6 gauge copper Romex thats 3 conductors rd/bk/wh plus bare ground. Would it be preferred to use the bare ground and cap the white in the panel? It is a main panel so I believe the gnd and neutral are bonded but haven't removed panel cover yet... not sure if that is important info to answer my question. Thanks for great videos and good luck with your channel👍

Yes - after verifying the ground, we typically cap the neutral wire and use the ground when the neutral wire is not needed.

what will happen if the circuit is only 30 amp? is it going to destroy the range, or it will run with less power? what is the difference between 120/240 and 240V?
@AskTheElectrician
@AskTheElectrician 2 жыл бұрын
If a range is wired with a 30amp circuit the circuit breaker will trip when the range exceeds 30amps. A 120/240 circuit includes a separate ground and neutral wire. A 240volt circuit includes a ground wire and not a neutral wire.

Only if the 40amp range is actually connected to a 50amp (or typically a 60amp) outlet at the wall. The actual range circuit size should be verified at the panel.
