How to Wire a 72 Telecaster Deluxe

In this video I wire up a 72 Telecaster Custom pickguard for a customer who has sent the pickguard and his pickups, purchasing a prewired harness to suit.
The tutorial offers a step by step guide to wiring the toggle switch, the 4 control pots, capacitors, pickups, jack and connecting everything together.
The 72 Telecaster Custom is a reflection of the Les Paul - 2 humbuckers, 2 volume controls and 2 tone controls. Electronically it is very similar to a Les Paul setup - the beauty of wiring a Telecaster Custom is that you can do all of the work in the pickguard.
Components Used:
- CTS 500k solid shaft pots
- Switchcraft right angle toggle switch
- Switchcraft 1/4'' jack socket
- 2 x 0.022uF capacitors
- 2 x Treble pass capacitors (1000pf capacitor + 150k resistor)
Pickups used are Bare Knuckle - Nantucket in neck position + VHII in bridge position www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/

Just installed this wiring harness on my MIM Tele deluxe. Very easy to install and made a big improvement. I actually didn’t realise there was a treble bleed when I bought the kit. It’s my first experience with treble bleeds and I’m lovin’ it. Really nice feature. Thanks man!

Very interesting video, Dylan. So new subscriber here! The blend control was very cool. Perhaps you could look next at modding the newer guitars with a treble-bleed circuit vs a 50s wiring circuit. Also, as others have mentioned, the four-way switch looks good, as does a five-way, where the first position (nearest the bridge) is actually a blend control and the fifth is the "humbucker" style.

Aye, having built panel boxes in the past using Allen-Bradley readouts, I can fully attest it is always better to have more wire than to come up short. YES, BEEN THERE, DONE THAT! And If I may, such things will ALWAYS happen whn you are short on time! Guaranteed! lol

Just finished a Deluxe and used flux paste on the top of pots due to the coating on the CTS pots. I scored the tops where I soldered and applied flux paste to ensure proper conductivity. although i use flux core solder it also makes for a better joints... Could of added a length of conductor for the bridge. Would of helped your customer a bit.

Brilliant video mate thank you! I’m wiring a 72 tele deluxe so the bridge pickup is standard tele bridge and neck hummer. I’m assuming the process is exactly the same? Just connect the tele neck pup as you did here with the hummer? I bought a mojito tone pre wire which just has too much going on and the tone pots don’t work despite me following the instructions to the letter. Figured I’d just strip it down and start over with the parts but following your instructions here.

Could you do a demo of a Fender Telecaster Custom? I have tried everything but no sounds from pick ups just buzz when touching hot wire from input jack to 3 way switch. It's very weird wiring

Since there’s a piece of shielding underneath the four pots already would that ground them together already? I’ve been told there’s no need to jumper the pots together if there is shielding already on the pickguard. Could you explain this for me so I can finish wiring up the 72 Deluxe Tele I have on my desk at the moment? I can’t seem to get the grounding and humming issues to go away. Thanks! Love your videos.

Thanks for this, very helpful. Question: is the ground jumper connecting the pots necessary here, since there's metallic shielding tape on the underside of the pickguard touching all 4 pots?

Hi thanks for watching. Not if your foil/copper tape is decent. If it starts to wear through then a ground wire is required (or replace the foil/tape of course)

I’ve noticed people use the thicker, stiffer copper lead for connecting all pots as you’ve done here. Is there anything special about this or is it just standard 20 awg wire without any cover/insulation?

I have Seymour duncan phat cats, but I cut them too ahort and want to use them on a different guitar. How can I add more wire since it uses the shielding sleeve?

Is the wiring you did here a version of modern Les Paul wiring? What confuses me is the caps soldered back to the tone pots and The single wire from tone to volume. Is it possible to use the standard Les Paul modern or 50s wiring in a telecaster deluxe with humbuckers?

Yes you can use typical Les Paul wiring, modern or 50s it is the same setup.

@Harrison Mair That's my biggest hurdle. I would assume it would be 250's for the Single Coil and 500s for the humbucker. Every source i find says something different. Some even talk about using 1meg pots. so confused.

I'd use 500k + 0.022 for the humbucker position and 250k + 0.047 for the single coil.

Fender actually use 250k pots across the board in the Deluxe and Custom regardless and .22uf caps (according to their own service manuals) which seems to go against the usual rule of thumb

Hi This guitar is a Telecaster Deluxe, not a Custom 72. the 72 has a single coil at the bridge and humbucker at the neck position. Im just sticking a seymour duncan hot rails in the bridge of mine and I jumped on this video, but wrong guitar. Nevermind, good quality wiring by the way, very neat.

Silly me thinking this video about wiring a telecaster custom would be about wiring a telecaster custom... as you said at the beginning, this a Deluxe, not a Custom.
