How to wire a guitar jack socket using vintage style braided hook up wire.
When wiring a Les Paul with braided hook up wire, connecting the outer braid (ground) to the ground lug of the jack is easier than it seems. Here we demonstrate a simple trick to make it easier.
This is referred to as "surgery" here at Six String Supplies HQ, as the best way to describe it is similar to a surgeon cutting the trousers of a patient open.

For separating the braid from the core wire I've always used a pick (dental, not guitar) to open up a hole in the braid wide enough to pull the core wire back through it.

Yes that is the preferred method - but it takes me too long and I’ve found cutting the braid away to be much quicker for me. I shall practice

@@SixStringSupplies, the Gavitt shielded wire is different than what I was used to using, it is a pain to try and pull it through, must be the wax coating on the cloth insulation. Now with the Gavitt I use the pick to separate a bit of the shielding away and nip it off and just work my way around it.

Good to know. I happen to be on StewMac & was going to grab a few shielded wires for my Strat's I'm working on & just wondered about the 1 wire hookup. All my Strat's have un-shielded wires so this upgrade would be how I do the rest of them... Great video.

The wiring kit from StewMac provided and recommended coaxial for the input jack but neglected to give instructions. I searched and searched for this info before giving up and using two black wires for my output jack. I'll mark one of them with white tape, but next time I get bored I'll consult this vid and install the coaxial. Thanks for these great videos, there is a gaping hole for content like this

Have you done a video on wiring up a jack that has a battery in the electronics? Or is it possible to solder both earth wires together on a mono jack? Cheers.

Great instructional videos. I have learned a lot. Thank-you! However, I have one question. Assume that I have followed your instructions to the letter. I have wired my Switchcraft three-way-switch as you direct, and I have wired my output lugs to the output jack as you direct. Here comes my question. Don't I still need to run a wire from the grounded sleeve on the output jack to the tone pot ground, running to the bridge ground? I'll put my question a simpler way: Doesn't a wire need to lead from the ground on the output jack to the bridge ground?

If you "pump" 1cm of brade a few times, you can then easily open a gap and pull the inner through. Its easier than trying to unwrap the brade.

I know this video is a bit old but I have a question. For the other end of that connection would you solder the braiding to the back of the pot and the wire to one of the hot lugs on the pot?

Can you solder the braided portion of the wire from the output jack to to top of the tone pot and then extend that output jack wire for soldering the inner cloth covered wire to the volume pot lug? If so, is it a good idea to solder a short length of wire from the top of the volume pot to the braided portion of the output jack wire? By the way, your video instructions are excellent! Very easy to understand, well organized, and clearly described. It is really helping me to figure out how to wire and shield my first Tele-style guitar build. Thank you.

@@SixStringSupplies Hi, sorry for my poor description. In reference to your video "wire a jack using braided hook-up wire" I interpreted it to mean the braided wire can be used as a ground wire. In that sense, using one braided and cloth insulated wire that is long enough, can you ground the braided wire (which is already soldered to the grounded output jack lug) by soldering the braid to the top of the the tone pot and then use the remaining cloth insulated portion of that same wire by extending it to the volume pot "hot" lug and soldering it there. I was thinking that might enable one to only use one braided wire instead of two (hot and ground) wires to accomplish the same thing.

question what do you call the wire that connects the ground from the lugs to the pots? It looks like just raw tinned wire, but I'm trying to buy it and can't seem to find it for lack of a name!

So what is the purpose of using braided wire? And this is as opposed to...another method?
@SixStringSupplies
@SixStringSupplies 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, the braid acts as a screen/shield against EMI and is recommended where the wire travels a longer distance, such as from a toggle switch to the jack socket. If using cloth wire and the distance is shorter (as in a strat) you can twist the wires tightly for the same effect. Cheers
