In this video, I show how a fuel pump relay works and how to bypass yours. I also show how to rewire your fuel pump for an upgraded fuel system or race car. Aftermarket 5 pin bosch style fuel pump relays can easily be wired into any car and made to work with nearly any electric fuel pump scenario you can come up with. This info could apply to any Bosch 044 style pump, AEM external pumps, or even a Walbro 255 fuel pump.
Pin 30 - Incoming 12v to relay from battery
Pin 87 - Outgoing from relay to electric fuel pump power.
Pin 85 - Ground
Pin 86 - Trigger wire to turn on the fuel pump relay. Can be connected to a toggle switch, the ignition switch, or connected to the factory fuel pump relay wiring.

Do you have a multipump tutorial of this? Can the relays be linked in parallel using 87a to one toggle switch for example having a surge tank with 4 fuel pumps and 4 5 pin relays? Then keeping the factory in tank pump connected to the factory wiring?

You may add, that a relay needs to be diode protected in order for the circuit to be computer controlled. So that when the relay coil is turned off it does not back feed voltage into computer.

Glad I found this. I am already a subscriber. I wired a relay off my ignition wire to aft as a “jumper” to keep my ign switch from overloading. But I think it’s causing issues. The pump does not come on now. Also my grounds should go to each other and on pin 85. Will try this. Pump worked before but I had aftermarket efi. Now I switched back to carb and the fuel pump does not work. Will rewire and retry! Before the ecm would “ground” the pump and switch it on.

Thank you so much for posting this video! Any recommendations how to use trigger wire based on boost level or only turn it on when car is above certain rpm range ?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 ай бұрын
When it comes to upgrading fuel systems in turbochargerd cars, people usually upgrade the fuel pressure regulator to one that is a 1:1 rising rate. That way you can run a high volume fuel pump all the time and it runs like stock. However, when the turbo spools and starts making boost,the fuel pressure increases 1psi for every 1psi of boost. For higher horsepower applications (maybe 600hp+), you’ll get into larger fuel line, multiple pumps and surge tanks/swirl pots. Below that, 1 good high volume pump should do the job just fine.

Quick question, I'm trying to add a kill switch to my truck for the fuel pump... When I cut the positive wire to it from the fuse box do I run 2 wires from pin 87 to connect to each wire... Also since it's going to be on a rocker switch can I just add a jumper wire from pin 30 to 86 and it still work, or do I have to run pin 86 back to the battery...

@WiringRescue question: could I use any 4 pin fuel pump relay from any car to create this setup. Plus does the relay need a earth wire for the relay to work. I just put an AEM 340LPH in a mitsubishi GTO in uk.
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 4 ай бұрын
@@beastman.330- Mitsubishi GTO’s are awesome, and I happen to be a big Mitsu enthusiast actually . So - your 4 pin relay just needs to be rated for the amperage that your fuel pump draws. Most aftermarket relays are rated 25 or 30 amps, and I think a 340 will draw less than 20 if I recall correctly. You DO need to ground pin 85 on your relay to a good ground/earth. Then the pump will need a ground/earth wire as well. Your factory fuel pump wire will go to pin 86 and it will turn your relay on. Pin 87 will go to your pump. Pin 30 will be a fused power source from your battery. Again, this fuse should be rated just higher than your fuel pump amperage draw. And this wire needs to also be rated for a higher amperage than your fuel pump draws. I usually use 8 gauge wire when I rewire fuel pumps.

If I run this relay do I disconnect the factory relay?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 жыл бұрын
@@dwight_boi - you absolutely can. Or you can use the factory fuel pump feed wire to power pin 86 on the new relay. That way the new relay is controlled with all the factory key-on controls. That is assuming your factory setup works, which is seems like it may not. So - yeah, I’d probably just ignore all the factory stuff and do this setup instead.

Awesome diagram for us visual/practical learners, thanks. What is the purpose of 87A? Is it for an alternate circuit sharing the ground (85) with 87? Does it trigger synchronously with 87 from 86 (on trigger, 87 and 87A both become high), or does it alternate state with 87 (ie, 87 high, 87A low, then 87 low, 87A high)?

If you wanted to have a hobb switch activate the secondary pump would you just run the trigger wire (86) to the NC on the Hobb Switch then once the pressure is reached it will close the circuit?

Great video and easy to follow. I have my LS3 all hooked up accordingly, the pump comes on key ignition, and it starts up. however when I run the car down the road easily and then jump on it, the fuel pump shorts out, but not the fuse and stops the car. I would take a live 12V battery spare wire and hook it to the fuel pump wire and start the car and it starts so I could get back home, then I have to disconnect the "hot" wire off the fuel pump wire otherwise the engine would stay on after removing the key. What connection do I have wrong that would make the fuel pump cut out just by quickly jumping or accelerating the engine?

Heavier gauge wire, fuse, relay and good grounds. It seems like the pump is demanding more than it can get.

So, let me see if I understand this correctly? My situation I am converting from efi on my 1981 jeep cJ7. I am retaining my in-tank fuel module (fuel pump). the power from my fuel pump will connect to PIN 87 and 30 will be connected to battery power and My trigger PIN 86 if I wire in a switch can come from the same 12v power source as PIN 30? Or, I could wire in the switch off of PIN 86 to my ignition power source and I would have to switch the switch to on to get fuel or if I left it off, I could use accessories power and not have the pump running if I did not want to start the engine? Do I understand that correctly... Sorry if this is a stoopid question. Thanks for your video it has helped a lot.

Are these wire setup safe on modern car's design? Because it have safety design built into ECU just in case there's an accident so that it can shut off vehicle fuel pump from not getting rpm input information from crankshaft sensor?

I Love the physical schematic and great explanation. I do have a question: on another video I saw that the presenter mentioned about wire “87A” as your direct hot wire to the fuel pump in case of emergency, is this true? . Now, my pump will run but it will not prime when I turn the key on, the vehicle requires, at least, two good long cranks to then start. After that, I can hear my fuel pump humming normally. I also replaced the relay only to observe the same behavior. Is this a sign my pump,is going bad? All of this happened after my mechanic replaced the electronic spark control among other things. Please shed some light? Thanks again!

Thanks for watching! I haven't seen that other video, so I can't be exactly sure how their circuit worked. There are many ways to wire a fuel pump though, so anything is possible. If the fuel pump isn't priming when you are trying to start it, I would expect it to be very difficult to start. If I were you, I would connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel system and see if it is getting fuel pressure when cranking the engine. If not, hunt down the reason why. It sounds like you may already know this reason. My guess is that your fuel pump is getting fed power in the "Run" position, but not the "Start" position. Good luck!

Any tips? My ECU have strategies like low voltage at idle and 12v for the original fuel pump. Thanks.
