Photocell. A photocell is a resistor that changes resistance depending on the amount of light incident on it. A photocell operates on semiconductor photoconductivity: the energy of photons hitting the semiconductor frees electrons to flow, decreasing the resistance
A photocell is a device that is used to detect and measure light. The dusk to dawn photocell sensor switch will switch items such as lights and fans on during the night and off during the day. A photocell sensor can be regarded as a transducer that is used to detect the light intensity.
The way this works is that as the resistance of the photocell decreases, the total resistance of the photocell and the pulldown resistor decreases from over 600KΩ to 10KΩ. That means that the current flowing through both resistors increases which in turn causes the voltage across the fixed 10KΩ resistor to increase.
