A few years ago I came to a meetup you guys had in Roppongi. This was before my semester as an exchange student started and I remember meeting a few acquaintances who got me into computer vision. @@yyawyeet2624 Hi, it's been okay lately. I'm still working remotely until Japan opens their borders though. I think I'm kinda fortunate that my university had AI and ML classes for undergraduates, but it's likely very brief compared to the graduate classes. This was also a job opportunity through connections, so I think I'm also fortunate in that regard as well. This ML Engineer title is definitely an attractive title to recruiters, but it's not entirely clear to me why they want one. It's a job, but its not quite the opportunity I was looking for. I'll take it for what it is and hopefully better opportunities will come up.

I got a degree in Violin Performance last year, but was having a hard time making ends meet where I live, so I decided to start paving a way to a more stable life by beginning another degree in Computer Science. Not sure what I want to specialize in, but it would be either graphics engineering (working for like NVIDIA), using my music background for some audio programming/sound libraries, game development, or just all around software engineering. Either way, I don't want to stay in the USA any longer, really. I am looking to Japan right now for my future because the layout of the cities, the architecture, the culture (besides some glaring social issues), the nature, and QoL all just seem right to me. I just hope I won't be too late in the game by the time I get my degree. I will have just turned 27 and depending on my internship, I may have no good work experience to look appealing to companies overseas. I am trying to use my time to start learning Japanese now, so I can integrate better, but I am worried about being able to get a decent salary from the get go to help cover living expenses and loans I have from school. I'm also worried about time spent at work. I'd like to have time to relax each day and be able to build relationships with people outside of work.
@DevinJapan

@@krusty4651 Make sure you have some personal project that makes you stand out. I recommend creating a mobile app(cross platform or native). Create a portfolio webpage. Anything that helps you stand out to get that first internship. If you work your butt off to get a good internship, life will be a breeze for you in the future. Don't slack on getting into a GOOD company. It's one of my regrets not working harder to get a good internship as a student.

What do people do if they have say millions in 401k in the US.. but then go work in Japan. 401k, as an example, is tax sheltered in the US and there is no tax owed until one withdraws from it at retirement. Will Japan view the 401k as a taxable account? Will I need to pay tax on it each year as it appreciates? Complex tax situation such as this gives me a pause when I consider working there.

@CodeChrysalis
@CodeChrysalis 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, 23% of our bootcamp students either have a computer science degree (usually from the US) and/or already have developer experience. It really depends on what your goals are and what you already have experience in doing--i.e. have you already have internships, do you already have a portfolio of projects, and so on. Our Immersive Bootcamp covers a lot of topics that are not covered in most computer science/computer engineering courses--particularly on topics that pertain to longevity in the industry, the process of creating a software product, teamwork & communication, engineering best practices, etc. Many people with a computer science background still find that our curriculum fills many gaps. Hope that's helpful!

Awesome Video! Had a quick question, if I have a spouse visa in Japan, will I still need to jump through all of those hoops if I don't have a 4 year degree or is that just to obtain the work visa? Also, I know you covered that it's possible to get a job without a degree, but what experience or supplemental credentials do you recommend to increase the chances of getting hired as a soft engineer without a formal education? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Keep being awesome and putting out killer content!
@DevinJapan
@DevinJapan 4 жыл бұрын
Spouse Visa is basically do whatever you want Visa. It's the easiest visa to live with here as you don't have to worry about looking for another job fast if you lose your job. Work on some side projects around a technology you are interested in working in. If that's mobile app development, make an app and put it on the app store. Other than that learn some Japanese, that will go a long way if you don't have technical experience.

very unlikely. There is a test you can take. I forgot what its called but it will likely require you to already have work experience as dev.

Those are fairly common skills that you can find work with anywhere including Japan. I recommend you learn ReactJS.

Can other engineers such as mechanical, electrical and chemical also find jobs in japan?
@DevinJapan
@DevinJapan 3 жыл бұрын
Sure. You probably need to learn Japanese to a high level though.

You can try companies like Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Sharp and automotive companies like Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Suzuki. There are also robotics companies that need mechanical and electrical. Chemical maybe panasonic as they are working on batteries. Im sure there are many more and lots of startups.
