this is a new version of my "How to Write a Green Day Song" video from Dec. '20. this one is better.
In this video, I break down the Green Day sound and create an original copycat Green Day song from scratch! I talk about chord progressions, vocal melodies, guitar and bass tones, the drum sound, and the production techniques that make Billie and the boys sound like themselves. Enjoy!

I don’t understand a lot about music, but Green Day is definitely underrated. I agree with you. My music teacher said that American Idiot is as great as any album of The Beatles. He’s probably exaggerating, but we can agree on his point about the band being underrated.

Great video, mate. I just wanna say a couple things: 1. The falsetto oohs are actually very common in punk, The Ramones and Bad religion did them even before Green Day. 2. I think “Blue Night" would've been a cool fake Green Day name. 3. I absolutely loved it how you moved your arms like BJA during the bridge, kudos for that. Anyway, I hope you keep making these kind of videos, they're always a good time for me. If you're taking requests... I know halloween is over but I'd like a Misfits video. I'd die to hear you make your best attempt at a Danzig impression.

Very very helpful man! Much appreciated. Great breakdown of why you did what you did. I, similarly started guitar mostly because of Green Day and my guitar teacher started by teaching me nearly half of American Idiot. Also similarly I'm a one-man band in terms of I produce (although I mostly produce for rap/dancehall), play guitar, bass, drums, piano, and a bunch of misc band and foreign instruments... Heh, it's a little tough now to keep up with practicing them all... I haven't really told anyone but I wanna tell you. I just started writing a pop/rock/punk/emo/metal fused project inspired by the mid-late 90's. So oh my gosh this is soooo helpful for understanding what I'm partially aiming for right now. So again, much appreciated for the effort you put in and I hope there'll be more from you. I'm subscribing.

Eric, I really enjoyed this! I, like you, started playing guitar and “singing” primarily because of Green Day…I definitely don’t sound anywhere near BJ compared to you, but definitely patterned a lot of my “singing style” by listening to Green Day. There are many things you mentioned throughout this video that I completely resonated with! You should check out some of my covers if you feel so inclined as it seems we have a lot of commonality in terms of musical tastes. Again, great video…I subscribed and look forward to checking out some of your other content👍

Amazing work, I always come back to this video to learn more! Im working on a project where Imma write my own song in the style of Green Day, Im already stuck on the drum fills. Is there a way to write drum fills in Tre Cool's style with a mouse in Pro Tools ?
@EricAmesmusic

Thank you for the reply my dude! Your video is helping me out so much! I figured out the drum fills thing today, not a problem anymore! But I really do need help with the sounds / tones. I heard that you said in your video that you used Superior Drummer, which Imma get probably later, but how did you get that Tre Cool drum sound ? Is it a preset that's ready ? Or you had to make it from scratch (Please don't be the latter x) ) And Im trying BIAS FX 2 to get the Green Day'ish modern guitar sound!

@@EricAmesmusic Yes please! You would be doing me A HUGE FAVOR 🙏!! Also I can't get over the fact of how you literally nailed the very core essence of Green Day! The sounds, the vocal adlibs, the solo, the theme etx... literally everything is perfect! I hope I can make something close to this, right now Im tryna figure out the main chords/melody of the song, on which Im gonna build the rest, I tried many riffs but still can't decide nor imagine how the entire thing is gonna play out! Also I wanted to ask, in your case did you start by writing the melody first and used it as a "base" to build the rest of the song? Or did you write your lyrics first and adapted everything else to it? Sorry for the long comment tho, the project Im working on is part of my studies, so I have to take this so seriously x) !
