A lot of you have asked me how to write music using motifs since I released the "What is a Motif" video. So, today we look at different ways to manipulate a motif into music.

awesome man, I'm researching a lot about songwriting in the more "pop" sense, so it's a breath of fresh air to see this type of composition, in classical form. I wonder to what extent Mozart actually thought about these definitions and structural things, or if it just came to him and now we grind it through theory.

Great episode! I've been messing around with motific composing for a while, but I'd love to learn how to make longer pieces using motifs. I can do a 3-minute piece by mutating a few motifs and messing around with harmony, but how on Earth do you write a 20-minute piece that feels coherent but doesn't feel stale?

Start with a timeline. I take an 11x17 sheet of paper and mark 0:00 on one end and the intended length of the piece on the other end (perhaps 20:00). Then start filling in what you know. Say you start with a motif, and then you know you want it to come back at certain points - mark down where those occur. Perhaps also mark down how you are going to manipulate the motif, and how long those changes will take to occur. Then think about other structural things: When is it big? When does a second motif enter? What instruments are involved and when? I also like to think about the "Emotional Architecture" - what emotional journey are you taking the audience on? There's a billion different ways you can approach these things, those are just some of the things I like to think about. Hope that's helpful!

How do you sequence a motif for more than two measures if you're trying to adhere to an 8 bar sentence or period? I can see the first transposition, but then you have to repeat it again or do something else? Thx

It’s an older one, but I really like Arnold Schoenberg’s book on Composition, which I think I may have quoted in this video.

How to scramble ones brain with motifs , find every note in every order put them upside down , back to front , high and low , close to together and far apart , in every note form and every measure possible , yep scrambled my brain good one lol.
