Hi Sir, I am final year MSc Physics student from IIT Ropar, currently I am doing masters project and previously in summer I have done internship and also one workshop. Recently I am looking for PhD job offers in different websites and many of them are with deadlines in October and starting date mentioned "as early as possible" . Should I start applying from now ?? since my MSc will be complete till June 2023.

You should start from early 2023 like Jan or Feb. Now is too soon. Even if you land some positions, you would not get your masters degree certificates before the joining date of the positions.

motivation letter is more in depth about your research work like 3-4 pages, however, cover letter is like 1-2 pages max. Cover letter is very specific and brief to write the purpose and mention your suitability for the position you are applying for. Sure you can mention this on the cover letter and in CV mention it like post msc experience. Many students have done this so its not uncommon to switch.

But what to write? I mean it's been 9 months and coursework here is really intense.. Therefore couldn't get that much of time.. Learned techniques but didn't really start my project (as I was sure that I will resign)..

That's the problem with the whole phd system in India. You cannot start your work in the whole 1st year properly. In that case just mention post msc experience where you were working on some techniques like a student assistant. But no research work. That would also count in technical experience.

It depends if your work experience is somehow related to your area of interest, then it makes sense to add it in your documents. But if you were working in completely different field then don't mention that in your motivation letter.

Sure, you should add your work experience since you worked in the the same/related field. That would be a plus point in your CV. You should apply for Phd in the field in which you are interested.

@Manju Kasana if you are not getting any response then most probably, you need to modify your application documents. Especially your cover letter and CV. Another reason could be that your zone of application is too concentrated on a single place. Make sure to apply in diverse locations. And Generally, the response time by professors is not too long. If they are interested in you, then at most 2-3 weeks.

Hi, so you can start preparing when you begin your last semester. During your master thesis work. Try yo find labs and professors that are of interest to you, and that way, you could land a PhD position right after your MSc.
