That's so awesome! I went to college right out of high school and I loved it but then my mom got terminally ill and I gave up my studies to take care of her and I later went back to University in my early 30s and got my degree in education and graduated Suma Cum Laude, walking across that stage was the greatest day of my life! Do you ever have trouble with timed writing? I do and I'm scared that it will hurt my testing scores
@yesreneau
@yesreneau 7 жыл бұрын
I actually hated timing writings--I thought they focused way too much on the main points and not enough on creativity. For timed writings, my advice to you would be to focus hardcore on essay structure, and don't worry about using beautiful language. Work on making things clear and concise.
@ralphtaylor9547
@ralphtaylor9547 7 жыл бұрын
I found that structure was a huge help in writing. Once you have your structure it is easy to hang your ideas in the right places. Different structures can be used for different purposes. Defining your structure can help a lot with writer's block also.

since you've recognized that it's a weakness, practice. find out exactly what examiners want you to achieve and keep those criteria in mind as you answer a question. increase your vocabulary and practice using more complex words a little when writing, slowly moving up to manipulating the English language to answer the question in a meaningful way while showcasing the depth of your thoughts. practice finishing those tests quicker than the allotted time, and even be aware of the speed of your handwriting, because writing faster will help. find a technique that will help you 'hit the most points in one go'. One of the biggest mistakes I made in essay writing was that I was too random, so I couldn't get the consistent results I desired. finally, remember to work on your essay's cohesion, because I think you definitely start to lose legitimacy when your ideas don't feel connected to your main ideas. I know it's intimidating as heck, but just do it, because the last thing you want to do in a situation where an essay like this is required is waste time.

This isn't always true though. In things like working out, yes, you want to practice it perfectly because if you use incorrect form you can seriously injure yourself. But for things like essay writing you often get feedback and sources you can use to improve. And some things you only learn by making mistakes.

I think this really only applies to 2 scenarios: 1. If you're writing for you English teacher and 2. If you're a professional writer already and writing for a legit publication/website. For regular schoolwork, and more importantly, FOR EXAMS, I found that my teachers appreciated the exact opposite. It was good to use nice words from time to time but maybe a handful (2-3 per paragraph max) and that was to really emphasise a point, like if you really wanted to show how well you understood a certain concept, you would use a fancy word with a very specific meaning that shows clearly to the teacher that you're not messing about and you know precisely what that term means. But other than that, teachers (and examinators) really really like it if you stick to very common sentence structures. By having the common filler words and structures you make it so that whoever is marking your work needs to focus less and concentrate less on the fancy words and unconventional sentence structure that you're using and more on the actual points you're getting towards your grade . This is extra important in exams where you don't have time to think and you need to keep your Points-Per-Line super high due to the time limit. If you can develop your own "cliches" and set of swiss army sentences you can mentally spend less time thinking about how you're writing and more about what you're writing. It honestly doesn't matter if you structure every single argument and start every single sentence the exact same way in an exam as long as it's competent. When it comes to intros and conclusions, my teachers and my experience have always led me to one conclusion: if you're not saying anything, don't bother. If you're not using your intro and conclusions to answer anything, cut them out. You can make your first paragraph have 1-2 sentences introducing your argument, or you can have an intro paragraph where you give all the definitions if you need to tick off "knowledge" points in an exam/homework, but don't waste time with "I'm going to talk abo-", THEY KNOW, THE TEACHER F***ING KNOWS WHAT THE ESSAY IS ABOUT. Same with conclusions, if all you're gonna do is restate what you just said, keep as a 1 sentence max. If you're gonna develop everything you've said in order to make a nuanced argument (what you'll need to do in Business, Economics, History, Sociology, and all that) then you can have it a bit longer. The hook thing is useless, you get NO POINTS FOR IT, you're wasting your precious time on it. The counter-arguments thing is 100% legit tho. Whoever marks your exam LOVES seeing that you know more than what the question asks at face value. If you prove that you understand the limitations of your argument and you can show nuance rather than simple black and white, they will cum all over your essays. But from my experience, it's better if you always keep doing a back and forth yes-no-yes-no-yes-no to keep showing how much you know and how nuanced and smart you are. Also, keep re-answering the question at the end of every paragraph, if only by adding a few words like "thus this proves that blah blah blah blah" By doing these things, you'll save yourself the maximum amount of time when doing homework and writing in class, meaning you can spend more time shooting your friends in the face across the internet and passing really stupid notes around to distract your classmates you are still writing while you look like an absolute badass for finishing early and getting an A. But more importantly, it will guarantee that you'll finish your exams. Now, I'm not sure how the exams work in the states, but here in the UK, (and this also applies to whoever is taking their IGCSEs or A-Levels) you have barely any time to finish and I only managed to finish my A2 for econ and history with maybe 3 or 4 minutes left while everybody else failed to finish and this was all because they spent their time on unneccessarily complex wording and intros and all that jazz. Also, if you're wondering, I did get straight A* in my A-Levels and GCSEs, with the slight exception of my GCSE business studies were I got an A.

In grade three, I made my favourite opening sentence to introduce the new topic I had to bring into my research essay; Okay, so I'd like you to sit back and relax while I tell you some cool panda facts! That one sentence impresses me to this day that I wrote that without copying it from anywhere since I am a year younger than everyone else in all my classes since, I am a grade ahead so I was around 7/8 years old.

What's the topic your writing about--I could give some ideas. If you're not writing about anything and just wondering how to do this for any, do this: 1. Think about what your topic is, what you want the reader to take from your paper, the mood of your essay; etc. 2. By thinking about all these things, try to write an opening sentence that shows the mood of your paper (this goes along with what the reader should take away from it) and covers the topic. It should introduce it in a way that sort of hangs off, if you know what I mean; don't give all the information, but give enough for the reader to be interested and want to read more. I'll give an example. There's many different essays, but I'll just be using a problem/solution. Topic: PTSD in veterans. Problem: PTSD can be caused by exposure to combat/violence and previous mental health issues. Some effects: families and lower cardiovascular health. Solution: Don't watch violent movies/shows and don't go in the military with previous mental health issues. What reader takes: The reader should feel sorry for the veterans and act upon the solutions because of it. Mood: Sad Possible first sentence (not the thesis): Not many have thought about the ear-splitting gunshots, the dark red blood or the mourning of families, yet it happens to many brave military personnel, risking their lives for their nation and receiving little in return.

HELLO!! I am a really big fan of Harvard students!!!! I ama middle school A student, but unfortunately, this semester I recieved one B(89%) in my report card in Pre-Ap science. i am wondering if Harvard University looks at your middle school grade and what to do to improve that 89 to an A+.. THANK YOUU!!

Listen, your middle school (and elementary) grades don't matter AT ALL... Once you enter high school, everything gets wiped clean. Middle school is the time to prep your mind and motivate yourself to be determined to do well in high school. Don't fret too much in middle school, take that time to enjoy your pre-teen/early teen life. Really, working veryyy hard in middle school is a waste of time. Ready yourself for high school by making sure you'll get into good honors classes in high school and then put all your hard work there. Good luck :)

I appreciated the part about formulaic writing. I completely agree that there are great structures out there that can teach us all how to write. But, like you said, they are just training wheels. You learn from them and then you learn how to move on and get creative - push the boundaries with your writing. Great advice.

same! but i'm in 6th grade, i'm not sure if this is the right advice but, i think if you don't doubt yourself and you focus on your grades and your plan for future (like how you are going to get into harvard) but still develop some social skills needed for presentations and etc. then you should be set! Also if you don't get into harvard it's ok! That's why the extra hours of volunteering that you have to do to get into harvard helps! (Now i don't know what I'm saying so please ignore my grammar lol, hope that helped!!!! )
