hi! this is quite the long video to accompany the long journey of writing an essay as an english major - I've included all the timestamps below so feel free to jump around! I wanted this to be an in depth look into the essay writing process, all the way from researching and drafting an outline to editing and solidifying a final product to hand in :) I know a lot of you have been asking for a video like this so I hope it's helpful/enjoyable! much love, xx

Wow! I'm an English major as well so this was so interesting to watch. I've never seen someone else's writing process in such depth. I'm one of those maniacs who tend to bang out the whole essay in a day, and though I doubt my grades have suffered much for it, I really hope that I take inspiration from this video to work through it in segments next time. It would certainly help my blood pressure a lot lol. Your organization and motivation are incredibly inspiring, Emma, so thank you for all of your hard work, both in writing that essay and in making this video

Last year I had to write an essay on a topic of my own choosing. We were completely free as to what it was about (obviously the first week the prof would accept or reject your subjects) instead of having a set topic or article for everyone to write on. I got a 97, I was at the top 0,5% of my whole year (600 people). One thing that helped me the most is the amount of secondary research I did. We had to cite at least 5 other sources next to the three main sources you found for your subject. A lot of first year students stuck to those 5, but I actually had 27 sources since it was a 7000 word essay. The teacher didn’t really give me any feedback other than to be a bit more concise in some parts of the conclusion (I hate conclusions so I saw this coming). I recommend everyone to become completely saturated in the literature surrounding your topic when writing an essay. It’s exactly what Emma says, you have to follow the already existing discourse and theories instead of trying to fit sources together and cutting out sources that don’t support your thesis. Do as much research as you can and use them honestly instead of fitting them into your own idea. This will really elevate the quality of your essay.

I have a 6 paged essay due in three days and I still haven't started. Am I watching you write an essay instead of completing my own? Yes, yes I am. This is the peak of my productivity :-) Edit) Just an update for anyone who cares: it is due tomorrow and I’m 3 1/2 paragraphs in :-) It’s also like 10 pm here

believe me, i've seen my friends writing 6 paged essays (or even a bit more...) just a few hours before the deadline, hahaha, crazy college stuff. You're safe, but I'd advise against "deadlining" and to start the essay today or tomorrow (if it's already night there.. don't push yourself too much), no matter how many pages you end up writing!

I'm a history major and I think I'm a pretty strong essayist, but this is really good advice nonetheless-I ought to try some of your tips next time. Also I'm feeling some of your English-student-pain this semester, I'm taking a class on the "Victorian worldview" and we've been told to read George Eliot's Middlemarch, which the prof has kindly segmented into four 200-page sections for us. So I'm feeling rather intimidated.

I'm glad to know that professors in your experience appreciate long intro paragraphs. I've gotten points off for having intros that were as long as yours in high school, so I'm a bit more encouraged in my own essay writing now that I know someone else has had positive experiences with it in college.

This is gonna be a very interesting video! I haven't watched it, but I will finish the entire video right after this. I'm a graduate of a social science subject (hint: not literature). I've never really seen the essay writing process of English or other literature/language students/grads in general. I'm happy that you are super open about your academic journey, Emmie! Wishing you all the best in your academic endeavors, and just know that you might have a large non-literature student following and audience. Your eloquence and fluency in conveying things in the English language, are so fascinating to a non-Native speaker - to me, English is actually a very difficult language, I recently noticed that there is a huge discrepancy between written and spoken English. Studying for the verbal section of GRE made me realize just how vast the English language is, beyond its standard everyday use, and even academic use. I'm planning on improving it, though. And when the knowledge on difficult English literature is made accessible, it makes everything so fun, and less intimidating (although I know that Emmie doesn't only read classic and "difficult" novels!) TLDR; I'm just so glad Emma exists, and I love how excited she is about her academic endeavors as an English student, motivating even the non-literature students. She is just the ideal student, isn't she? *UPDATE AFTER WATCHING* Okay, update: I finished the entire video, it was VERY well-structured, an actual essay walkthrough, and I actually learned so much from it despite being a non-English/literature student. I'm really not surprised that Emma received a really good grade in her essay. Keep it up, Emma! Much love, French Toast

Your essay tips are fantastic, Emma! I just graduated in December from my English Literature Honours degree, but even after 5 years of studying something I love so much, I keep learning so many new things with each assignment and essay or examination into a work. I'm the same, I don't go through several different drafts on essays, I just keep honing in my different paragraphs till I'm 100% happy, especially the choice of words, which of course takes forever haha!! So I related to that a lot. Though... I also often ended up writing my actual essay in two or three days, just because I took too much time in research and prep and ran out of time ;). Loved that checklist your professor gave you. Also, I absolutely enjoyed reading your introduction. My honours thesis was on Lewis's exploration of medieval and renaissance literature, so I engaged quite heavily with the Faerie Queene, and watching you work through your essay on motherhood in the Faerie Queene was both so nostalgic but also SO FASCINATING. I'd love to dig into the Faerie Queene more, particularly the historical context and stuff. So interesting. Congratulations on the amazing grade! Well deserved! Your professor sounds really amazing as well. Emma, this was such a wonderful vlog, thank you so much for sharing! Such a great video, I'll be passing it on to my uni's Lit society for them to share with other lit students :).

Definitely enjoyed it! I never thought to highlight my notes in different colours for different paragraphs. I might try that! I totally understand the need to work on an essay for days rather than hours, haha. I'm not physically capable of a rush job either. I usually give myself a few days for planning and organizing everything, a day to write the outline, and then I pick a day that I can fully devote to the writing of it, pretty much just stay in bed with my laptop and notes, and take long breaks between each paragraph. I always tell myself I only need to get half of it done, but I'm usually on a roll by then and just want to get it over with. I always leave the conclusion, proofreading, and works cited page for the next day, though.

I finished my MA degree two years ago and don't see myself writing an essay ever again but I'm still planing to watch and enjoy every minute of the video. Besides I broke my elbow a week ago, had an immediate surgery and am now in bed all day with a cast on my arm so I'm glad to get some comfort from your content 🧡

I really enjoyed this analysis of your essay writing, especially since I am returning to study through Open Learning soon. I'm attempting an arts subject so any videos or tips on writing and especially essay writing is so helpful. I have to say that I would love more teachers/lecturers/professors to be as wonderful as yours is for this video essay, he/she sounds excellent. I feel that excellent teachers of this calibre are not always available. I love lots of feedback, too. I hope my teachers in Open Learning will be as excellent in providing really good feedback when I begin.

Not an English student, but this was actually so helpful. I like the idea of splitting up the days you write the essay and going over the work you have already done each day.

Damn, as an English and Linguistics double major and one of those people who most definitely writes their essays in a day, I don't think I could ever bear to go through as many rounds of edits as Emma does. I hate reading my stuff back because it makes me insecure about it and when you have 20 minutes until the submission deadline, there is no time for that. I've literally handed in essays I've just edited while writing them and never read through beginning to end. It hasn't come back to bite me in the ass yet, so yay?

hi Emma do you think you could make a video about the other type of essays that you need to write for your English classes? the ones where it's less research based and more about your own thoughts. I always have a hard time with those because head empty no thoughts 😞 your essay is absolutely fascinating and I loved how you lead us through the process!! always so fun to see how other writers approach writing their essays ❤
