The first 4 quarters of the game were totally fine. Tony Romo was calling a perfectly adequate Super Bowl. And then overtime happened... and everything went off the rails. And Jim Nantz deserves a ton of blame, too.

This is really overblown. I would have stayed silent like most people but it is Romo’s job to analyze. I feel like people pick on him at every opportunity just like during his playing career.

It's really becoming nauseating. Nitpicking every fucking thing he says as if he's not better than 99.9% of the guys doing it. It's the classic cycle in sports -- build 'em up early on only to tear 'em down once everyone acknowledges their greatness. It's the hot take dogshit sports culture we have now

@@thedailygreatness It’s not about handling the scrutiny, it’s that it’s not valid. It’s tedious nitpicking that makes the complainant look way worse than any perceived infraction Romo has committed. And who are you to say what he’s worth? He’s worth what he can get on the open market. You aren’t obligated to like him, that’s totally fine, but it’s a boy who cried wolf scenario when y’all incessantly whine about him… it undercuts any valid critiques that could be levied.

Oh, yes! Dan Fouts. Twenty-one years later and I can still hear him yelling, "Bad call! Bad call!" during the Ohio State-Miami (Fla.) national championship game at Tempe January 2003. It took triple overtime, but we managed to win that game, no thanks to that louse. For that matter, twenty-one years before that, he couldn't even beat my Bengals in the AFL Championship Game. (Granted, the actual temperature was 9° with a wind chill of -60° (or about -45° under the new scale); but it's still football.)

Honestly I wasn't paying attention to the commentary that much. I was mainly focusing on what was going on on the field to think much of what Tony was saying in certain points.

Agreed, I think its a matter of style, Romo maybe broke an 'unwritten rule' perhaps, but maybe its time for things to change.. I dont mind a commentary on the play even right in the moment.

@@comparehealthlifedental imagine it like this. You were watching the last play at the watch party, the room was cheering. And then one guy decided to step in either to the whole room or to you, babbling about the last play, even though the replay wasn't even rolling, so you wouldn't even know what the guy was saying All the while you and the room were still cheering. To some, for an iconic game like that, having such anticlimactic moment at the end because you feel the need to be, can be annoying. That's just me though. For a reference, imo last call of Super Bowl 51 is a good way to do it, take it from the HOF Troy Aikman, and Joe Buck

@@big4horry No doubt of nepotism that as soon as Joe Buck joined Fox in 1995 with only a couple of years of professional broadcasting experience, it was a mistake to immediately hire him as the lead #1 MLB Announcer and soon after the #2 lead NFL Announcer to Summerall/Madden. Buck I agree 1000% he has gotten much better in recent years

@@bundesautobahn7Jim has already “retired” from being the lead Announcer during the NCAA March Madness Final 4. Jim amazingly is only around 60ish years old (he joined CBS at only age 25/26 in the late 1980s)and only a couple of years married for the 2nd time and has a younger wife and kids. Thus I can picture Natnz within 5 years only covering golf for the rest of his otherwise excellent career.

I think Romo is better suited as a lead Studio Show Analyst/Co Host along the lines of Bradshaw for the rest of his broadcast career. That is IMO where he would best shine. With that said, with CBS paying Tony ten million plus a year for basically only 6 months of full time work barring a personal screw up by Romo, he will be the lead CBS analyst at games for at least the near future. FYI With Jim only a few years ago marrying a 2nd wife and having young Kids, I can picture him walking away from the NFL and only doing Golf Commentary for rest of his career in a couple of years.

Yeah this is really nit picky. It is "for the superbowl" because it's assumed that kc will get the touch down when they touch the ball. It was definitely "for the superbowl" because the td that was NOT achieved was what cost the game.

Vin Scully - arguably the greatest PBP man of all time - & Joe Garagiola - were MASTERS of using silence to let the moment speak. On what was perhaps Vin's greatest-ever call -- Mookie Wilson's epic at bat vs Bob Stanley, 10th inning, Game 6, 1986 World Series -- Vin & Joe were silent TWICE. First, for almost 32 seconds after the TYING run scored, and then when Ray Knight scored the winning run, they let the moment not just breathe but completely exhale for a full 3 minutes and 20 seconds to let the pandemonium at Shea speak for itself. NBC even showed two different replays of the winning play during the nearly 3 & a half minutes of silence, and Vin & Joe said nothing. And THIS is how Vin finally broke the silence: "If one picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words."

Maybe cheated the ravens but 100% didn't cheat the 49ers, 49ers had their shot and blew it. Rough coaching and cmc looked like he didn't know what a football even was until halftime, Purdy was just throwing the ball but not looking for ideal places and letting 3 and outs come to him. Honestly, that third down play called on the Chiefs in overtime could've been for the Super Bowl. You punt on your first possession in overtime and the Chiefs only need a field goal to win it. That's why Romo said that. I'd give him a pass there.

@@27peted All this said, I agree with JG9's overall point about saying "this is for the Super Bowl!" too often is annoying and bordering on parody. And I especially agree with him needing to STFU right after Hardman's touchdown. If Nantz didn't put up a stop sign, that's bad. If he did and Romo blew past it, that's even worse.

I like Romo, I think he adds to every broadcast he is in. He knows the game and he is a great cheerleader for the NFL. He gets excited, and I like that. Does he make mistakes, absolutely, they all do. He's an everyday man, and I think he can connect with casual fans and bring them into the game. I think he brings in just enough manning cast flavor to balance his knowledge with his excitement. In overtime, several of those plays were crucial and Tony made those calls. Now did we literally believe the game would be over on each one, no!! But the point being, those were the plays that could in the end make or break the final score. I think your criticism here is way over the top. Personally I didn't see anything wrong with the final call then, and I still don't today. What Romo said perfectly complimented Jim's call in that moment and it put a book end on one of the most exciting plays to ever happen in a Super Bowl. I'm sorry JG but I'm going with Romo on this one

Dude! Chill. He did a great job. He's allowed to be excited with the eb and flow of the game. Makes him more relatable and therefore makes me feel more involved as a fan. This post is for the Super Bowl! What’s impressive about the Falcons-Saints game is that it was Mike Tirico’s first year as Monday Night Football play-by-play announcer. Not only that, he had to throw out two stop signs to two men in love with the sound of their own voices, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser, with the latter being inexperienced in calling games.

Honestly, the analyzing after the Super Bowl winning play didn’t bother me at all. In fact, I was more interested on how he got so open rather than listening to the crowd. I didn’t even notice. BUT, to me, the way he kept on talking about “this is for the Super Bowl” is unforgivable. I was starting to question if I understood the rules correctly.

The saying “silence is golden” can go a long way, especially when silence can let a big moment breathe. I’ll point to Chris Fowler with Reddick and Orlovsky calling the game for ESPN Australia for an easy comparison.

You're nit-picking Romo. When Purdy missed on the 3rd and goal, I thought "There goes the Super Bowl" foreseeing what eventually happened. That was a critical failure that gutted Kyle's strategy. Romo's observation seemed spot on to me.

to be fair, i knew it was over when kyle shanahan got a 10+ point lead. when kyle gets a lead in the super bowl or nfc championship against a real super bowl contender (green bay wasn’t one in 2020, they were the epitome of a team helped out by refball), he’s losing. the chiefs, patriots, and rams will tell you that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Romo's lack of respect for Nantz also contributed. Sometimes, I get the feeling that Romo treats Nantz like Joe Rogan treats Mike Goldberg when they called UFC fights. I've heard him correcting or attempting to even though Nantz was in the right.

His inaccurate analysis in the overtime was inexcusable, especially given more than half the viewers were casual watchers, and needed reliable rules information. Romo, is a nightmare to try and parse his ferret hopped up on crack cadence.

These announcers have scripts in front of them or at least talking points. That’s how Nantz so quickly mentioned Mahomes’s 333 yards and the stadium address. I remember in Super Bowl 56 after Rams took the lead at the end. It was a pretty normal drive, nothing special at all, and Collinsworth said something very outlandish about how this is a drive we’ll remember for a long, long time. It was obvious to me that this was a predetermined thing for him to say because it was actually a pretty boring drive and not dramatic at all.

not a football game, but my fav example of the announcers being silent at a big moment is the aftermath of scott brosius's homerun in game 5 of the 2001 world series. theres about a million things going on on screen, they even show the replay of the home run, and buck and McCarver just sit there not speaking for nearly a minute, and when McCarver finally talks what he says is perfect.

Romo needs to be demoted down to the level of Ian Eagle. He doesn't understand the concept of "Shut the hell up." The celebration of the game-defining final play of a Super Bowl is not an excuse for you to talk over it. Unless you are either Vin Scully, Kevin Harlan (ex-Chief radio PbP man who called the game for Westwood One/CBS Radio), or Mitch Holthus (the current KC PbP guy), you let the moment speak for itself. Even expert radio guys like those three understood. So did Nantz. Romo deserved the same bop to the head Alex Hawkins should have gotten when he dropped that "sissy" bomb on Roger Staubach.

Youre wrong. Every play from the opening kick is FOR THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL! It's why every mistake is critiqued for weeks to months afterward. It's why the Super Bowl has such high stakes. Every play is for the Ring. It's why we love it. It's why Vegas loves it. If your gonna make a video shredding a guy, at least do it for something other than the guy doing his job with some passion. Let's not forget this was a boring game. Romo had to manufacture excitement.

Romo has fallen off terribly since his debut season. His excitability used to be charming and fun but now it's obnoxious and overplayed; this Super Bowl exposed that fact. He's basically football's hype-man at this point. Funny thing is that I recently had a "facebook memory" come up from 3 years ago where I complained that Romo was overrated as a broadcaster. Nothing has changed my mind on that front.

In Brazil, there is no such rule. It must be because we inherited this from radio. But none of this really justifies it, because I know the American way of communicating, which is different from ours.

I like Romo cut in the silence , I don't like Lance cut in. Romo played at highest level at QB he like John Madden above the other announcers. Romo is way better than the other announcers is something you have to get over

I was the in-arena voice for my college's volleyball team when I went there. We were pretty good, won a heck of a lot more than we lost, especially at home. One year we won the league title (and later were national runners-up). I remember that match pretty distinctly. My usual call of the match-winning point was "Vikings win set three by a score of and win the match three sets to zero!" That time I called "Vikings win set three by a score of , win the match, AND THE TITLE, three sets to zero!!" There was always some post-game prattle for me read off as well; usually I gave it a quick moment cause the crowd was always hyped up a little (on the rare occasion we did lose at home, I just launched straight into it). When we won the league title, the students stormed the court. I made my call then killed my mic. It was at least five minutes till I went into my post-game prattle.

Absolutely, my brotha you indeed articulated your point very well. Tony Romo is a good NFL analyst, but he is biased to the Kansas City, Chiefs. We've had the displeasure of having to hear his commentary during some of our regular season games, and he is strongly disliked by Chiefs Kingdom.He just refuses to let us be great.

Reminds me of the 2009 World Juniors on TSN. In the semifinals, Canada tied the game against Russia within the final 5 seconds of the game. On their home ice in Ottawa, the crowd erupts as the commentator Gord Miller says, "Can you believe it?" Analyst Pierre Mcguire jumps in with, "I can" then starts spewing random things about the play.

I really don't mind Romo. He's more like an enthusiastic puppy, and I like that. Someone previously mentioned Harlan and Warner, and they are a really good combo in terms of knowledgeability and calling ability. Harlan's legendary "I'm calling both games" is a clear example of his ability to wing it and come up with something awesome (thanks Urinating Tree). But, Romo's fine. He's like your drunk uncle. And, it's been years since I watched games with an older family member.

It's overblown to say that he RUINED THE SB. He's GOATing the whole game, but just butchered that last call nantz made. Romo was babbling about the last play when the audience couldn't even exactly know what he was talking about, because the replay wasn't even rolling yet, all the while the euforia was still going on and the cheers were still at their loudest. THAT'S IT!

He didn't do anything as bad as Greg Olsen did last year with his constant bias and absolutely unprofessional and irrational bitchfest about the holding call not even acknowledging the angle showing the hold. Like when Romo and Nantz deduced that the ball hit someone other than McCloud, you just know Greg would've been too busy throwing McCloud under the bus

Just because he doesn't let there be radio silence doesn't mean he's not giving any valuable information to viewers, my guy. I tend to do stuff like this all the time when there's lulls in the action and my family needs catching up on the game. This is a nothing burger and, honestly, quite the personal overreaction on your part. Romo's not perfect as an announcer by any means, but he's still one of the most knowledgable and best in the business.
