🇳🇱 How trains get delayed: Railroad Crossing Malfunction: Amsterdam - Eindhoven VIRM 9/4/2024

I don't regularly drive to Eindhoven, but today it's that time again! Unfortunately we will not arrive on time. Along the way we initially have to deal with that miserable long stretch of slow driving near Culemborg due to unstable track. Further on we get even more delay due to two malfunctioning level crossings..
This is the first video in which I provide information about the provinces we drive in. From now on I will also report the average punctuality of the train series, and before the intro I will show an exterior of the starting station when possible. I would love to hear what you think of these additions. Enjoy watching!

Ik rijd niet regelmatig naar Eindhoven, maar vandaag is het weer eens zo ver! Helaas komen we niet op tijd aan. Onderweg hebben we in eerste instantie te maken met dat ellendig lange stuk langzaam rijden bij Culemborg vanwege verzakt spoor. Verderop krijgen we nog meer vertraging vanwege twee gestoorde overwegen..
Dit is de eerste video waarin ik informatie geef over de provincies waarin we rijden. Ik meld vanaf nu ook de gemiddelde punctualiteit van deze treinserie, en vòòr het intro laat ik een exterieurtje zien van het beginstation indien mogelijk. Ik hoor heel graag wat jullie van deze toevoegingen vinden. Veel kijkplezier!

bij 54:00 staan er 1x links en 2x rechts een soort van witte schoorstenen? Kan me niet bedenken waarom die daar zo strak langs het spoor staan.

Inderdaad interessant, en goed gezien @nlsupport. Ik weet het ook niet. Zou iets van beluchting kunnen zijn voor ergens bij of onder het spoor. Maar hoop dat iemand ons dat hier nog kan vertellen. Zag wel bij 54:00 en ook ter hoogte van de spoorverzakking bij Culemborg dat er een witte paal met brede voet en zonnepanelen erop en camera's eraan. Dat is duidelijk. Hiermee wordt het spoor bewaakt, wellicht ook tegen koperdiefstal.

I love the extra info and intro of the exterior of the station! I'm always a sucker for more information, so I would say to keep 'em in the videos! thankfully I've never been on the road when a railroad crossing defected, but I have been in the train from Amersfoort - Deventer when we had to pass reaaally slowly because the crossing defected (exactly the same crossing as the one in the video you mentioned, the one in the bio). very interesting to know the procedures train drivers have for passing defect crossings!

Another great video! We didn’t get to Maastricht quite a bit, but we were delayed a bit anyway. But the leisurely ride gave passengers the opportunity to admire the beauty of spring nature.

Mooie rit. Ik heb die vaak gemaakt toen ik nog jong was; in m'n uppie met de intercity van Weert naar A'dam Centraal om model auto's te kopen bij de Bijenkorf, dankzij de OV Jaarkaart. Dat waren goede tijden, begin jaren tachtig. Geweldige week gewenst! ~Maarten

Je kan best gelijk krijgen over de oorzaak van de dubbele overweg storing bij Vught. Ze zijn namelijk al een paar maanden erg druk bezig met de voorbereidingen voor de verbouwing van station Vught. De aansluiting bij Vught gaat van 3 naar 4 sporen en krijgt een dive-under. Naar mijn weten wordt het stationsgebouw een aantal meter naar achter verplaatst, en worden de sporen en perrons in een open tunnelbak gelegd. Ook word de A65 verlegd, in verticale positie. IPV onder het spoor, eroverheen.

Met betrekking tot vertraging, trein liep Den Bosch al binnen met 10 min vertraging. Hoe lang duurt het probleem voor Culemborg nog, snelheidsbeperking aldaar bestaat al tijden. De toegevoegde informatie en beeldmateriaal is wat mij betreft een dikke plus, meer van dit :D

Geweldige video. Voor ons kijkers is het altijd leuk(er) als het niet zo gaat als normaal! :) Dacht trouwens dat dat verzakte spoor bij Culemborg al was herstelt. En wat ook niet helpt is dat er daar ook voortdurend gele seinen achter elkaar volgen. Kwam zeker door de filevorming op het spoor door die snelheidsbeperking? En interessant, net ten zuiden van de aansluiting met de Betuweroute bij Geldermalsen, 54:32, staan nieuwe seinen. Is wel wennen. Zo'n lang achtergrond bord, en maar één licht in drie mogelijke kleuren. Maar dacht dat de algehele uitrol is vertraagd omdat er toch problemen zijn geconstateerd was leesbaarheid betreft voor de machinisten. Enfin we zullen zien. Overigens opvallend dat je in Eindhoven op het 1 na noordelijkste spoor binnenkomen. Weet niet of dat hier door de omstandigheden kwam of dat het veranderd is. Vroeger stonden hier de IC uit Venlo en uit Heerlen/Maastricht. Dan kon je op hetzelfde perron overstappen. Bedankt voor het maken en delen van deze video!

Extra information and station buildings shots are a great bonus !! I used to live to the East Coast Mainline in Northumberland, there was a few times the level crossing next to where we lived did break down..... always had an irate driver or two if they were forced to wait more than a few minutes 😬🤯 Did see one driver trying to use the crossing while an overnight closure was ongoing, they didn't get very far.... due to the plant blocking the lines 🤦‍♂️😂

It would be interesting to know about the historical and continued construction methods of the railway track beds in the Netherlands. As some of the older routes traverse some low-lying farmlands, were they built on brushwood bales/rafts to stop them sinking into the sedimentary soils that they cross? The Liverpool to Manchester railway at Chat Moss in Lancashire, here the UK uses this construction; because of this, it has a lower normal speed limit. During very wet years it has its speed limit further reduced as the rafts become more buoyant and prone to move, making the track bed uneven. With the speed restrictions on this route it made me wonder why they were in place. With the two crossing failures adding to the delays it must have felt like the journey from Hell for all. There are not so many crossings in the UK now, the one that comes to mind is a quarry line that closes the road into Coalville twice daily near both rush hours with the shunting of a long rake of stone hoppers with a very slow industrial 0-6-0 shunting loco; it seems to take forever when you are stuck on the wrong side of that crossing!

Chat Moss was a problem because it literally could not be drained, at least not by the technology then in use in England - and there had been attempts to do so, even before the railway came. The Dutch, however, are *famously good* at draining swamps. I doubt that they would have resorted to the same solution just to build a railway. The two actual speed restrictions seem to refer to an underbridge and an area where a culvert may have been installed - a culvert being a specialised type of narrow underbridge to allow the passage of water. It is probably the condition of these features that requires slow running at those particular locations. The train also runs slowly *between* those places, but that is because the signals all show yellow - so we're stuck behind other trains that are stuck behind yet more trains which are proceeding through the second restriction.

Mooie video! Spijtig dat er vertragingen waren en nu nog zijn op de Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). Het lijkt alsof NS het kampioenschap van de Belgische en Duitse treinvertragingen wil bereiken, omdat daar de vertragingen het grootst zijn. NS was vóór de Coronapandemie wel stipter geweest dan de NMBS en DB. En nu minder.

Very interesting video and the additional information welcome. However is the odometer reading of 131,000 for the VIRM unit correct? I ask as based on being in operation for 200 days per year for a unit built in 2008 this works out at the unit travelling less than 50 km per day which is unbelievably low. Perhaps the odometer stops at 999,999 and reverts to zero?

One thing I always wondered is what do the train operators do if there's a moose on the tracks? I'm not even sure if there are moose in western Europe. In which case, substitute any form of large mammalian wildlife.

@MofoMan2000 The closest western European equivalent is probably the humble cow. Cows can be a real problem - they're large, heavy, big-boned and they can cause a _lot_ of damage if hit at speed. The British railways learned that lesson in the Polmont accident in 1984 (details on Wikipedia), which resulted in a whole lot of changes both in terms of operational procedures and train building policies in the UK and elsewhere. in Britain today a report of cows on the line will run through the area at severely reduced speed and the "orange army" will be sent out to round it/them up, clear the line and repair the damaged fence they got through.

They run into it, unless somebody spots the animals on the tracks in advance. Earlier today we had a local passenger train here in Denmark, which ran into - and killed - a flock of 20 - twenty - cows on the track. The train suffered superficial, mechanical damage to the front, yet no people were injured.

One additional piece of info that would be apreciated is the number of vehicles that make up the train set. Was the VIRM you were driving a 4-car or 6-car unit? I've also noticed that when 2 units are coupled together, it's often a 4-car + 3-car pairing. I've also noticed the 10/11/12-car combinations. Obviously dependant on the time of day. Thanks. This was a 4 car train. You can see that on the info card after the intro: '4 delen'. It might be a good idea to mention the number of cars in the train info section after departure. Thanks for the tip!

Any additional details you provide on your videos are always welcome. I probably missed this info from a previous video, but what kind of construction is going on just outside of Amsterdam Central. There used to be numerous sidings in that area which were removed back in 2023. Now it almost appears a road is being constructed there with a new bridge? Or possibly a new right-of-way for the railroad itself? Thanks for any information that could be provided.

What's the reason for the Speed restriction ? Is that because you've had a lot of rain and the water level is high in the canals alongside some sections of track ?

"Condition of track" speed restrictions can be for a whole host of reasons, ranging from subsidence (for example from underground mine workings) to ground shifting (often weather related) to a damaged rail which doesn't need immediate replacement but does need to be hammered less by heavy trains until it is replaced to worksites where track or ballast has been replaced and is bedding in, and probably many more reasons. A train driver won't be told more than "condition of track" because we don't really need to know.

Que increible y que lastima, después de tener unas flotas de trenes tan modernos y tan bonitos, Holanda se ha convertido en el país de Europa con lis trenes más Asquerosos, sucios y con la mantencion más dudosa del continentes. Los trenes amarillos y blancos, a medida que pasa el tiempo, las betas de mugre son más grandes, notandose que hace mucho tiempo que no los lavan y limpian, que verguenza, un país que se dice tan avanzado, que mantengan así sus flotas de trenes, PARECE MENTIRA. En su interior, estarán igual de sucios y mugrientos.
