Get the latest strategies on treating trauma in the short course: "How to Work with the Part of Trauma That Can’t Be Verbalized" with Peter Levine, PhD: www.nicabm.com/program/levine...
Peter Levine was at a trauma conference in the Middle East when someone in the audience asked a question: "Is it possible to work with a trauma if you don't know what it is?"
So Peter threw the question back and asked if anyone in the audience had a particular symptom that they'd like to work on.
One man raised his hand. It was Haim Dasburg. He just happened to be an expert in the field of treating trauma.
Haim joined Peter on stage. He told Peter about a chronic back pain that he'd been been suffering with for many years.
What happened next was took Haim completely by surprise.
------
In this video, Peter Levine will share how he helped uncover an incomplete traumatic response that was stuck in the body.
Traumatic memory is unique in the way it can often live on in the physical patterns and the cognitive patterns that a client might develop after a traumatic experience.
This can become a painful paradox because the very response that may have kept our client from harm can now also be keeping them from healing
Peter is one of the world's foremost experts on treating trauma. He is also the creator of somatic experiencing. When it comes to healing trauma, Peter focuses his work on the body. Because it's there where we can often see the effects of past traumatic experiences.

I'm doing a college paper on alternative treatments to PTSD. I have suffered from this and there's a lot of misconceptions people have about it. I was always told PTSD was a brain thing but it wasn't until i realized the trauma stored in my body that I was able to make progress. In the Army they would always talk about muscle memory during our exercise time and it got me thinking if the body contains neurons just like the brain why cant trauma be stored there?

You know why it's that way, because when fear strikes your mind, and it can't be contained, it moves to your body, and it disables certain functions of your body. You use the mind to attack the fear of the body, and you use the body to attack fears of the mind. .. Every time I go in my mind to destroy my fears my body has contained, I'm like 10 seconds in and I'm already whooping those demons, then I stop and tell myself that I'll save this little pleasure for later. lol There is light, friends.

@@seatrill Every client is different. Areas of the body store different levels of memory and trapped energy. By allowing the client to talk and then gain their trust during the massage session, they will start to open themselves up enough to release it. Many times they do not even realize it is happening, it just happens in the course of the massage. As the massage therapist, you will intuitively know where to place the right amount of pressure in order for it to happen. Sometimes it happens the first session, sometimes a few sessions later, depending on the level of trust developed between you and the client. Sometimes, if the client has too much fear or is not ready, it will not happen at all.....but you will sense this too.

@@seatrill sorry! I can’t believe I’m seeing this notification only today! My approach is more metaphysical. The client doesn’t need to speak, their body speaks to me as a massage therapist I’m connected through the body. The physical body communicates what is within. A person who suffered a trauma or faced a radical life event that caused suffering, can around a year later develop malfunction in their organism to respond the memory or beliefs that got printed in their unconscious. Chronic pains are usually related to the present moment or to the belief a person printed in the unconscious out of an event or trauma. In the worst scenario, it can come as a cancer after years. Massage therapy allows a person to become aware of their own body as they sense them, it becomes integrated. When I was studying massage I had a study case where the client liked to talk , but she changed the subject as I moved to the other parts of her body. I did research and all made sense. Today my client go silent in a peaceful state, after the session a give my feedbacks. A very simple example , I had an adult man who sad he needed to restore cos he faced a funeral in the family and was still grieving. I didn’t ask details for discretion. But after the session I told him the reason why he was so drained was his mother, cos even being an adult, she kept being controlling him and he felt like she commanded his next steps in life. “Exactly! How did you know that?” He said. So I explained to him that when I pressured his right calf he moaned in pain, calves are your legs going forward, the right side of the body represents the feminine authority we have in life. When he starts to take his own steps without feeling that his calf is chained, the pain will go away.

@@riripurpletini it is basically like asking you to translate trauma or pain into a gesture or movement of any kind. It's a very powerful question which helps those who are kinaesthetic learners, people who learn via the physical body and by doing rather than reading or just listening. But a random example might be if one experiences a memory of a trauma as a severe fluttering in the stomach, and they would act that out by shivering or swaying. Generally, trauma held in the body has a pattern of some sort and you might self soothe it physically via things like foot tapping or picking your cuticles or swaying and not even be conscious of it. He's trying to connect you to that feeling and your physical expression of the feeling. I hope that helps.

I interpret this approach as paying attention to bodily sensations and leaning into it to find out what it is trying to communicate with us. What I found most interesting about this video was the part where Haim was asked to notice whether the tension was uniform and where it might want him to move his body. I experience muscle tension and aches all over my body almost every day, and one of my approaches has been to do a body scan, notice the sensations, and help my body relax with hot showers, hot water bags, self-massages, hip-opening stretches, sun salutations, progressive muscle relaxation, and bilateral eye movement. All of these have been very helpful in managing my pains, but I do them as part of my daily routine, not intending to sit with the pain and emotions that might be coming up right after. I give myself time to sit and experience the emotions during the day when I notice them rising in my body. I have started feeling too activated, which could mean that I do not integrate enough. I think I am also missing out on crucial insights that I could get by tapping into the emotions that arise right after my practices. I am curious about trying the approach talked about in the video and seeing how it works for me.

Re-living traumatic situations again in the register of the whole body is to me a condition for working out the contradictions in the vegetative system created by these incidents. When this occurs, it leads to spontaneous recovery of the vegetative system’s functions. Spasms in the musculature loosen, spontaneous recovering of breathing occurs, the skin changes colour, the patient gets better sight and as some say, it is easier to think clearly.

trauma will manifest in physical symptoms which can cause disease such as cancer. The mind is the engine that controls our thoughts, it can be used for healing or destruction. We should take inventory of how we feel physically and how to remove/address the emotional attachments to a past emotion such as anger, resentment, etc.

This is a wonderful find.. After many years of dealing and working through severe panic attacks, GAD, and all the other stuff it brings with it.. I found that there was a very somatic symptom still ever present.. it would escalate when my stress levels were high, or I'd been through a stressful event.. but even at times of relative calm.. it's just there.. I'm at my wits end.. I'm starting work with an actual trauma counsellor. I can't find anyone who understands my symptom.. it sounds fairly straightforward enough.. basically it's issues surrounding stomach/solar plexus area.. any 'exertion' can cause a panic attack. At it's worst, I've literally had panic attacks just rolling over in bed.. literally. Like my body is so wound up like a rubber band stretched to it's maximum.. but it's more than that.. I just know there is unhealed trauma. I've had moments of immediate respite when I've talked about some childhood events.. I just can't sustain it. Sorry to write a lengthy post here.. but I just need to let this out in an environment where there is a chance someone will understand what it might be. I'm frustrated and in tears, because it's stopped some aspects and dreams of mine.. and things like training at the gym.. any movements that involve bending over exacerbate it so much that it leads to panic. I just want to release it once and for all. Thankyou for reading, love to hear from anyone who experienced the same. It just feels like such a mystery symptom. I hope you all find the healing you deserve :)

@290802001 Hi, thanks so much for your reply.. really appreciate it. Over the years, it's been counselling that was geared more toward the panic/anxiety side of things, that involved just talking/cbt etc. Personally, having been active always helped..I've always been into sport.. gym, mountain biking, hiking.. though what's funny, is that is when I really noticed the physical aspect even more so.. training at gym in times of high anxiety, despite providing relief after the fact, is where I'd notice my symptoms, and they'd be borderline debilitating and panic-inducing. I find meditation/prayer help.. though I haven't been as consistent with meditation as I'd like to be.. considering I have felt results. I know that's a bit of a vague and general response for now, though it means a lot to have someone who is experiencing something similar reach out. Feel free to message me in reply here, or inbox me on my youtube channel. Thanks Caroline :)

Hi John...I was watching this video and randomly came across your comment. I'm very sorry to hear you are having so many difficulties. Are you still having problems or were you able to find someone to help you release this trauma? Your comment was very interesting "any movements that involve bending over"....if you think back on your life, did something terrible happen to you when you bent over? I hate to say it, but was there perhaps some sexual abuse? You don't have to answer publicly, but it's something to think about. It sounds like you have some very severe trauma...I wouldn't recommend you try to work through this one alone.. You might want to look into a therapist that is familiar with Peter Levine's work and works using his methods. I found this video very interesting; as I'm an adpotee, and in my later years I've been feeling sore in and around my body. I was adopted by my biological Mother's brother and his wife, as soon as I was born, then at 81/2 months old mum had a baby but because of complications she had to stay in hospital for 3 weeks; I didn't stop crying throughout the whole time only to sleep because of exhaustion. Mum had a new baby to look after, plus aneedy one ( she must have been torn). At the age of 6 years old mum and Dad split up and I was devastated by the whole situation and felt so alone. I was also told at an early age about my adoption but I don't remember anything about it OR any thing else about my life; what I do know ( or think I know) is that there are many things in my life that I don't remember, like the time I was chased by my step father with a pick ⛏️ axe. I'm now wondering if certain illnesses are trauma related and how can I know this. I'm trying to heal myself through KZfaq videos and I think it's helping because I haven't cryed like this in years but what I'm really hoping for, is to stop being angry and start being more loving.

I also am thinking about his explanations. His association with pain and trauma and the body's response. I think I'd accommodate it in my own life, because I suffered a lot of severe trauma after major brain surgery. I had very severe hormonal issues and weak immune system where I contracted Coxsackie viruses and epstein barr as well, consuming my thyroid. It triggers also sweating because of fear professors treated it very badly, just asking me how I feel about knowing I can die any moment because of that. It was the furthest thing on my mind, because I felt I had a lot of life and service to give as a mother and nurturer ob the brink of the biggest adventure of my life!

It is about merging the bodily, emotional and cognitive experience in such a way that the patient experiences / recognizes the conflict / opposites as an organic whole and that they are solved as an organic whole (cf. Newer Research, Two Memory Systems, Damasio). The unconscious emotional experience, the trauma, is made conscious, integrated. This "only" happens fully in the human basic position.

I belive that the main task of the therapeut is partly to help the patient to recall ECOSORS: Emotional, COgnitive and SOmatic Reconstructions which have been decisive for how the patients own self-regulating growth possibilities have been disturbed and entered the vegetative system as an unsolved contradiction, thereafter to be congruently present in the patient’s emotional condition, a co-wanderer in the land- scape which the patient must seek to be able to construct, or rather recreate his history.

Past definitely does define the future , until we drop in the body memory and release the patterns from repeating it. There is no other way. The past actually holds the key to the future . We live in quantum unviserse , so that means what happened in human past time is actually still running the current show and the future show , until we become actively conscious of the energy patterns within our body and remove them one by one.

Is it possible to release pain and discomfort from hidden trauma without assistance from someone else?
@Ladida386
@Ladida386 4 жыл бұрын
Hm, I suggest not to. Because of trauma, you see yourself as a victim. You need someone beside you to see you as a whole person, who will recognize if you are going in the right direction. Usually, we are not that strong mentally and psychologically, to go through trauma just by ourselves. Sometimes you need to because there is no one around, but this is not for beginners. Reiki is good, but you need to know that reiki evokes a lot of things, also attached entities that must be cleared, but you can not do this alone. I suggest you pray, make confessions, connect yourself to God before you go working on your trauma. When you are working on trauma, you open up a black hole in your soul and entities can pull you into something you don`t want to experience. That`s why you need to be protected, that means that you need a guide and you need God on your side. And you need to grow morally and ethically to really overcome trauma, no judgment towards people or situations that were involved in trauma, just pure understanding that this happened to you and that it has no effect on you from now on. It`s a lot of work and sometimes it takes a lot of time if it`s a heavy trauma it will take years, little by little overcoming it, looking at the trauma from many aspects, sometimes knowledge that you get from dealing with this particual trauma can become your mission and job.

That will make them feel better when they probably feel guilt for what trauma's have been inflicted on them x people going through this need compassion and understanding and to be heard and be drawn to whatever healing is best for them, supported by whatever spiritual belief (if any) that helps to heal and be free and therefore benefits the whole as we all heal xxxxxx love to all

I have a region of high tension in the middle of my back. I can clearly feel it in relation to unnamed stress. Still I was and am highly functional in my profession as a nurse for already 30 years, which includes also heavy physical work. But this kind of tension goes not along with it. It still is there, feeling sort of a defense against an attack from the off, from behind. - In several sessions with Osteopathy and sometimes massage, when touched there, although KNOWING in advance, I was going to be touched there, I couldn't help and my whole body (back) sort of jumped upwards like if it was a reflex (like patella). It feels extremely alert. All the time.

Trauma can be anything , that has power to overwhelm your rational mind and activates your survival mode ( flight/fight/freeze). During this experience your memory is stored somewhere..so that you can function effectively.... When you have developed intellectual powers , when your mind feels safe then, it will bring out the repressed memories into consciousness....

How to live with someone who has ptsd....? Please help.
5 жыл бұрын
Love and compassion (I had ptsd). Yes it's not easy but patience is the key. The hard thing in ptsd is we can be very conscious of our problems (as in depression) but stressed out by everything. We see stress, we feel stress, anywhere, anytime. So we are pretty detached from life and it creates of lot of fatigue, and fatigue creates more stress etc People suffering from ptsd have to learn again how to relax, the sweet voice of a loved one can help ;) Of course professional support is needed too. The more we can calm down, the more we can access to the primal wound(s) to heal it/these. Hope this helps!

I was hoping for something less obvious than "oh, right, that time I was in that war, and I was injured and all my friends were murdered" Needless to say, most of us don't have something so obvious to "remember" (there is NO WAY a psychologist wouldn't have already thought about this), nor do we remember anything after 2 minutes of looking at our pain. Like most "amazing" psychological treatments, this one smells strongly of bunk.
