How Tunic Goes Beyond Nostalgia

Tunic is the latest game to make my brain go "oh... huh... that's really cool" and so naturally I started writing about it. Eventually the game became a very interesting examination of not just how nostalgic appeal works but how it CAN work, where it can go and what it accomplishes along the way. Tunic is possibly one of the most powerful singular gaming experiences I've had even if the game itself is a pretty light 15 hour adventure in of itself. I suggest this game to anyone even half interested and this video (while spoiling basically everything) explains why.

Realizing what the "golden cross" meant is maybe one of my favorite moments in gaming.

Tunic was a breathe of fresh air to me, it reminded me a lot of playing A Link To The Past when I was a kid. Not having a clue what I was doing, but stepping foot on an adventure and seeing the world unfold

Tunic is the only game for me that has scratched the Outer Wilds itch. And anyone who has played Outer Wilds will know that this is the highest form of praise I could possibly give to Tunic

As a fellow Outer Wilds obsessive, I fully endorse this sentiment!

I am not good enough at video games to be able to play Tunic without significant help, so this tour through both the story, the gameplay, and your reactions thereof was absolutely fascinating. Thank you!

I need to give this game another go. I feel like if I just sit and allow myself to really fall into it, I'm gonna become obsessed.

The more I think on the game the more I reflect on it being kind of thin as far as a menu to credits goes, it's the statements it ends up making that really took me to new places. It's a great game but it's in the details, you know?

The revelation of what the holy cross is and when the second save file appears both blew my mind. What a game. And as a Zelda game it’s great too!

Excellent reflection on such a powerful game! The anecdote about learning to jump in Super Mario Bros is a particularly clever connection. The sheer amount of third-eye-opening moments in Tunic is absurd; every time you think you understand how things work you stumble into another world-changing secret. It just has so much!! Your closing thoughts on the synthesis of past, present, future were super cool as well. All-around great video on a great game :)

Yeah this game really went hard (in my brain). It's the kind of game has me reeling even after hitting publish on the half hour video essay I put together about it. Between this and Inscryption games are really doing what they can get get at the core of how I think about things.

TUNIC helped remind me of a part of me I had long forgotten about: a part of me that has been there all along, but, was just forgotten about due to life and time itself obscuring my vision to that part of me that all along just wanted to be noticed, spend time with, and be loved and cared for as they are no matter what

This game is one of very few games I have played from this year so it is kind of the top by default. It is such an experience in it's own right I think it's earned that place regardless.

This game was really good, another knowledge based puzzler similar to Outer Wilds that does it too. I would try to take note and check behind objects for secrets since I know puzzle aspects of this game but I still missed that one at the windmill and a couple others. Really lovely environments with the most complex puzzle I have ever seen in a game at the end of the game. Another game I would suggest you might like is CrossCode. I think it can be played on any console or pc nowadays. Awesome field exploration like old school top down games but really takes it to the next level. It was a blast getting all the chests and secrets on the field map. The dungeons are insane with some of the most complex puzzles ever. Side Quests help you level up and all are high quality and diverse in terms of gameplay. Some are really challenging too. Story is decent. The only thing lacking in Cross Code is the sense of discovery like Tunic has. One thing that might hold you back is the length of the game.

This was wonderful! I love this exploration of communication that is implied in the gamepad itself. Somewhat reminds me of Raz's gaming for non-gamer series, but this is capturing the awe and joy of new discoveries in that language.

haha, well the reason it would've taken so long was because I would have to spend like a month thinking through all of the implications, which I didn't end up doing :( That said, the thing that really kicked things off in that direction for me was how I read that in the Grand Library there is a drawing of a game cartridge on a chalk board with "Universe?" written under it or something like that... which really freaked me out when I found out about it.
