‘TV’ shows have also faded away for ‘streaming shows’ which are more akin to the old TV miniseries as opposed to the actual TV series of Network TV. Budgets are bigger, but seasons are shorter. And While they are broken out into ‘episodes’ most streaming shows are just parts of some long for story instead of individualized self-contained episodes. Most streaming shows I had a hard time remembering distinct episodes because it’s just one big multipart story.

It really depends on the story you are trying to tell. Some would feel awkwardly short in film format, while others run the risk of feeling dragged out over a full series. Awhile ago I would’ve said something like, “TV Shows are better because you can spend more time with the characters, world, and story.” But at the same time, not everyone has time to watch twenty plus episodes of a TV Show, and what if the series ends badly.I know it’s about the journey not the destination, but a bad ending to a TV Show is probably worse than a bad ending to a Film Series because of how long a tv show can be. Unless you’re watching an episodic show, TV shows are a little risky.

I feel we are in a golden age of indie films (or on the cusp). A24 releases consistent indie films that are best experienced at a cinema in my opinion (e.g. X, Pearl, Everything Everywhere All at Once). Even aside from A24, recent indie movies (e.g. The Banshees of Inisherin, Emily the Criminal) are creative and entertaining spaces for creators and audiences alike. Great video!

An average movie is better than a average tv show because tv shows can feel like a waste of time alot of the time. Tv shows definetely have more potential in my opinion with the longer run time which is why I will always prefer tv shows. My favorites tv shows are Dark, Breaking bad and better call saul and attack on titan.

What a great topic to talk about! There are so many elements that go into our current state of entertainment. Thanks to channels like HBO and streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, TV has come a long ways. They can have a very cinematic quality to them that is unprecedented. It's nuts how much content is produced each year for television and movies. It's like ice cream flavors, how do you choose!? haha Combine that with a substantial decrease in good theater experiences for many people, it's easy to see how tempting it is to stay home and just stream a new movie for $19.99. I appreciate you mentioning the lack of those mid-range budget dramas that we used to have. I really wish those would come back. It makes me wonder what stories and experiences we are missing in the cinemas. If those kinds of movies would return to the theaters with notable actors in them, I'm curious what theater attendance would look like, as well as the demographics. BTW, I did go and see Avatar 2 twice in theaters, IMAX 3D, this holiday season! It was that good of a movie experience, I had to see it again. I will always prefer movies and the theater experience. You mentioned that series have narrative flexibility and room for build up several times. Yet you would be hard pressed to show a single series which first episode serves the hitting power of final episode. Series are firmly commercial products which linger on as long as it is financially desirable. Movies however can work towards a singular vision their entire runtime.

I think one thing that helped movies gain the upper hand during the original television golden age was that a lot of movies were being televised for the very first time so a whole new audience was being introduced to these films which in turn resulted in renewed interest of movie stars and reminded people why they fell in love with the films in the first place. I agree that there’s really no way for films to surpass tv in the modern era since back then there were only around 3 tv channels and a movie playing on tv would’ve been much more widely watched. Plus, I think tv is easier to know about since you can see new shows recommended in your Netflix queue or commercials during your favorite show advertising new tv series, while with film I feel like I barely ever hear about new movies unless it’s the predictable Marvel or Star Wars movie so I think that in addition to the incredible variety of content and subject matter for television, it’s also easier to discover new television shows to watch while films only seem to gain hype when they’re either a sequel, remake or superhero film, which many of us are tired of at this point so we’d rather stick with the more reliable option of tv since we know there’s so much out there. It’s crazy to think that such an amazing show like Succession is also extremely popular since if that story had been made into a film, no one would’ve probably even heard of it.

Another issue I think both formats suffer from is the nature of economics superseding story necessity: with both films and television, stories and the characters that tell them have finite potential for motivations, arcs, emotional growth, development, etc., but all too often, when a move or show is popular, they run the risk of being forcefully continued when, often times, there really isn't any necessary or compelling story to keep telling. But the success of the property ignites the economic machine to create more to capitalize on that success, regardless of whether or not it was ever meant to be more than it originally was. Endless movie sequels, spinoffs, reboots, etc. are bad enough for a lot of stories and characters, but ongoing TV seasons stretch that issue even farther, which makes me less inclined to follow TV series as opposed to films. When I get hooked on a TV show, there's so much more time invested that I find it harder to disconnect when it runs past its due course; a bad sequel or reboot to a film is easier to ignore, to me, at least.

As someone who prefers movies to TV shows, I am really annoyed that so many action/adventure stories are constantly turned into a series. I understand why people like TV shows, but they are a lot less exciting to watch than movies. I would love to see a resurgence of original action movies.

It's very difficult for me to start a tv series, Breaking Bad was a rare thing for me I am a long time film buff that prefers the art of film but I will invest time in a series if I really find it appealing but many shows are formaulaic , algorithms are writing much of todays entertainment.

I just want good quality from both. If it's good I'll give anything a shot.

Cool video. I feel like the Disney+ Marvel shows are showing us how "studio production" tv shows are working even less than the movies. Amazing spectacles (John Wick 4) and my favorite directors still get me to theathers, but I think Mr Robot was turning point for me. The greatest TV shows are up there with the best of the movies. And it's amazing.

I love to see that this discussion is happening, i'm a big believer of more long form storytelling over film anyway, just personal preference, always been that way. And have even recently been talking to my friend how much more popular tv is becoming especially with increased budgets on shows like stranger things, people like contentment and that's in tv, comfort shows, characters etc. Just excited to see this conversation happening online other than just between me and my friend.

It is very rare for me to watch a movie these days. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that I don't want to commit to a story that will be over in 2h. I want to know their world, talk about the show with friends and all that. I used to be a movie buff growing up but these days I much prefer tvshows.

The idea that viewers saw Avatar 2 for “the spectacle alone” is a huge oversimplification. People go to films to see great filmmakers tell great stories. And James Cameron happens to be one of the greatest directors to ever do that. There’s a reason audiences went out and saw Avatar 2 during the pandemic era and skipped out on CGI spectacles like Jupiter Ascending with bigger movie stars (pre-pandemic era).

There was a 5-8 year period in the 2010s where I don't think I watched any new movies. When I finally did watch one again, it felt "unnatural" for lack of a better word that so many events were condensed down to a couple hours. I guess I prefer the gradual story telling as seen in TV shows.

I enjoy mini series for drama. I can't get into long ass series and movies aren't my thing. But the mini series or limited episode series has been perfected.

Between 2000 and 2005, I went to the movies with my son literally every weekend. Great time for movies, but shortly thereafter movies started to suck. I really wasn't a TV person before, but right around my exodus from going to the movies, I switched to TV series and haven't looked back. That was around the time shows like Two and a Half Men, House, Lost, Greys Anatomy, 4400, Prison Break, etc. came out.

These days with streaming we cannot even call it TV, is something between that and movies, you have bigger budgets and movie starts doing it.

I think spin-off tv shows that are a continuation of older classic movies are what people prefer over these legacy sequel movies & legacy sequel trilogies like Halloween & Scream. I love shows like Cobra Kai. Shows like Chucky & Cobra Kai seem to be doing better than all of these legacy sequels probably because you get to pace it better & don't have to cram so much nostalgia & call backs into just two hours or less. With legacy tv series you get to pace it more gradually to where it doesn't feel rushed & new characters you introduce get more time to develop & blend in with the legacy characters in a way that feels natural. Legacy sequels like Terminator Dark Fate, Scream, Halloween Kills & Halloween Ends would probably have gotten much better reactions if they were done as tv shows that you can stretch out into a number of episodes & for as many seasons as many seasons as you need to tell the whole story you need to tell in a way that doesn't feel rushed. Like the whole Corey Cunningham & Allison thing on Halloween Ends. That might have worked if you'd have just made a spin-off tv series & pace it for about two or three seasons so it doesn't feel rushed. I actually liked the Corey, Allison storyline. But I would've liked it much better if it didn't feel so rushed. So, I can understand why so many people hated it. If it were done as a tv show it could've been paced & developed much better. Like the Ash vs Evil Dead show. I know it got canceled before they could get the last season they wanted. But their ratings were good for the first two seasons. & I think it would've probably been way more hated had they tried to rush that story & cram it all into one movie or into a legacy sequel's trilogy. Three whole seasons of a tv show allows them to pace it better & let it flow. Now, I'm not saying the only kind of content they should make now is sequels or spin-offs of old stuff. But all I'm saying is when they do it seems like spin-off tv shows do better at continuing these stories than movies. 🎬📽😎

Definitely a TV person. I was a huge film nerd in the 90s but basically stopped going to the cinema in the 2000s. At that time, in my 20s, I went deep into foreign and independent films, before pivoting completely to television somewhere around 2010. There really isn’t anything appealing to me about modern films.

In Australia it’s just far too expensive. I don’t want to go to the theatre and pay 20 bucks for a ticket, 15 if I want a drink and pop corn, 8 bucks for parking to watch a movie about a struggling drug addict who is a neglectful mother or to watch some pretentious movie about a character with a disease so some actor can win an Oscar. Nor do I want to see some shitty video game looking marvel movie. I want to see avatar 2, top gun,or good sci-fi films, Tarantino films, Scorsese films, quality action and epics, Christopher Nolan’s and Dennis vilenuve films, movies that were made for the big screen and worth the price of admission.

Tv for me. The refreshing and risky argument hits it right in the head on why. Sequel Franchising and soulless reboots makes it a very tired medium. Like you've seen one, you've probably seen a dozen. With TV you get more specialized and niched stories that can fit for you. Instead of a one size fits all approach. Also another thing I love about TV is the sense of community you get outside of the show from stuff like forums and conventions. For movies it's not as fun as they go for attracting everybody so you get a lot of conflict and in fighting within the Fandom community, since it's such a wide group of people who don't see eye to eye.

Im the opposite, I watch more movies now and less tv shows. The 00s for TV were great, but when the 2010s came they became meh. Even the popular ones I find overrated. I don’t love modern movies either but prefer to watch them cause of the runtimes. I prefer not to waste time on a TV show cause I don’t have much spare time to watch 10+ hours worth per show

Most Modern TV or as i like to call them Soap Operas (at least most of the time). Usually go on for far too long, run out of ideas way before the show ends and usually ends horribly with it turning out its was boys dream, or they all turn to fairies or some shit. Because they were making it up as they went to long. Movies even when they suck. Dose not waste that much of my time. TV on the other hand waste Tons of my Damn Time. I don't think its Replacing Movies at all. Regardless if you think these Blockbusters suck. There still more people watching that instead of these shows. There still plenty of Indie and foreign films. Its just that people who insist TV is better are, too lazy to watch them. And if you compare the Best Movies ever made. To the Best TV shows ever made. Its not even Close. Movies win Every Time. TV will never have the power of Cinema. I have never been moved to tears by a TV Show. But i have when comes to movies. I didn't cry for Walter White. But i did cry for Oskar Schindler. And people need to stop telling that TV Better. Because it takes 3 times as long to get to the same story.

As long as films are getting made, I'll never gravitate towards tv shows. For 6 hours, instead of 1 story in a tv show, I can experience 3 different stories in film. Tv shows are nowhere near to films imo.

When you look at some of the major prime time TV productions, they actually bringing movie standards into drama series for TV.

Peoples lazyness and unecessary hype for garbage TV shows, and garbage blockbusters killed off the cinema, probably forever. Cause it’s not only about money, it’s how people react with content.

To me seeing a movie in cinema is probably the worst way to see a movie. I have to leave the home without reason, it costs much more money and you are at the mercy of other people. Somebody checks their phone, or talks during the movie it ruins the experience. I also can't pause the movie to go to the bathroom so it's vastly less convenient. On top of all of this a movie is about two hours of content. Sure, the characters are fun and the world is cool but now I have to wait several years to get another two hours of that content? That's nothing, look at TV show by comparison that can provide you about an hour of entertainment per episode with ten to twelve episodes in a season. The original Star Wars trilogy clocks in at about seven and a half hours of content, spread out over six years. A TV series on the other hand could fill the entire first trilogy of films into just parts of a single season. Assuming twelve episodes at an hour each, that's twelve hours per season and with the same six years that's 72 hours of content. That's two and a half times the runtime of every Star Wars movie combined. Finally the last problem with films is that when I see a movie I don't feel I got something back for my time. With the MCU at least I feel like there's a continuing story, it matters that I watch the film. But a movie that has no continuation, no relation and no connection just feels like a waste of time. Why would I want to waste two hours of my life on a new thing that doesn't contribute to any of the things I have going on already? Put it up on streaming and maybe I'll watch it on the buss to school or something. But going to the cinema to throw two hours of my life into a story that can't even go beyond its own meager runtime? No thank you. In summary: Movies tell less story over a longer period of time, and are deeply hurt by their very limited runtimes. The cinema is a horrible and inconvenient place to watch films, and the only reason I go is to avoid spoilers when new Marvel films come out. Do I regret paying money to see these movies? Yes, but you live in hope that the next episode is going to be good again.

I love that every time people debate about TV shows vs movies what they really want to say is American Tv shows vs American movies. Hollywood is trash, it's being trash for quite a while now and it will continue to be trash, however pretending that A) an indie film industry doesn't exist and/or B) international films don't exist is just silly. Sure, there will always be the language barrier for native English (or any other language really) speakers, but that shouldn't be a problem since subtitles exist, and yes Hollywood movies are the ones that are more available nowadays, but I bet you can find film festivals and screenings near you for indie or international films, so let's not pretend there's nothing else beyond our own noses.

growing up i loved movies, i enjoyed a fair number of shows, loved a couple, but really enjoyed movies, these days i prefer shows with gripping narratives and good jokes than 90% of movies, i think the last movie i saw in theatres was Avengers: Endgame and the most recent film was M3gan which was quite good

It's also about the dynamic of society on how movies will play out. The number one motivator for film is family. But since most millennials do not have a family of their own, rather the head of a family, we tend to approach what we like to watch in an individualistic way, where we're not going to the theaters as a family.
