I'm disappointed that you forgot to add the fact that they tried to add a Terms of Agreement with the Warcraft:Reforge's custom maps where they will legally own any maps/game modes made/created in W:RE to prevent another Dota 2 incident from happening

Pretty sure Icefrog worked at multiple studios before landing at Valve. This includes Riot Games, and S2 Games (they made HoN, which was the GOAT MOBA). On top of that, Icefrog tried to get Blizzard to believe in Dota, and they rejected him each and every time. There was no robbing, more like Valve took a good piece of furniture left on the side of the road knowing it was an extremely high quality piece that just needed some love.

Imagine if Blizzard made a Dota 2 with the original lore of wc3 with the 4 factions. The game would've had more appeal since its roots wouldve been deeper. Its absolutely moronic how they handled the situation, what a massive opportunity wasted.

Some big misstakes. 1) By time Guinsoo was hired by Riot, he was not a dota developer for quite long time. 2) HoN, Smite and other moba based were realeased way before DOta2 was announced.

There's also that thing in WC III Refunded's EULA that any content made there will be own by Blizzard, not whoever made it. I don't know if it's still around but this caused even more outrage back in 2020

Blizzard could have had chances with HoTS to compete due its early popularity BUT, some idiot got too greedy and started demand insane royalties when even a LAN-event would have price pool of total +10k and blizzard games were involved. So what happened instead was that every non-blizzard LAN-event dropped all Blizzard games out of their e-sport event lists and went with Dota/LoL/CS events. This eventually lead to that people with esports dream started focus on these games and Blizzard games got totally over shadowed. So Blizzard never really got "Robbed", but more that they shot their both knees and hands.

Robbed is a strong word and a wrong one a that, BlIzzard ignored one of the best parts of WC3 and now it cost them dearly but it was a bleesing to us DotA under Activision would be a HORRENDOUS place

Heroes of the Storm was a really fun game tbf, but its weakness was how casual it felt compared to other MOBAs, in a genre where the audience is usually pretty hardcore.

dota is from 2004 and the first people working on it who later went to create league and riot, were at the time of leaving, trying to destroy the idea of defence of the ancients , never forget ; )))

The different objectives made HOTS awesome for me. The problem was it felt too shallow heroes needed talent trees if they werent gonna do items. and yeah shared xp felt like baby mode.

Basically all Blizzard had to do was not have share exp, add farming gold, and have a game mode that didnt have different objectives. They should hire me.

Lol the funny thing is Heros of the Storm was actually decently popular and PROFITABLE. Like Blizzard just was not making as much as they wanted. It was profitable though and so they just shut it down because they were too greedy.

I think in Warcraft 3 Reforged EULA, it gives Blizzard total ownership of all the Custom Games. You know, just in case someone makes a new banger game type using their game.

There is a huge difference on the "MOBAs", they were free to play to starters, so no money needed as other genres to buy and play, and also being a team focused game instead a 1v1 it allowed people to let go the frustration of acknowledging they were bad by putting the blame on their team player.

Heroes of the Storm is actually my favorite MOBA game. It's both sad and hilarious how badly Blizzard bombed the 2010s. They could have been the kings of E-Sports with SC2, DOTA, and Overwatch

to be completely fair, at that time blizzard was a leader in rts genre, in mmo genre and soon joining fps as well (overwatch). Also keep in mind that back then blizzard actually cared about making high quality games. Which demands lot of resources. But its possible that they just had their hands full already. Its like when youre a child, you have 10 toys, you cant play with all simultaneousely but when your sibling takes some of them you suddenly really want to play with it (hence the lawsuit). Theoretically they could just make a halfass version of original dota, milk the brand and leave it die. But I think they just chose not to, which cost them the race. You cant have everything. HotS in my opinion is pretty fun game, but they released it in worst possible moment. Also I think they didnt read well the target audience. They tried to make it less casual than league but it wasnt enough. It was still pretty complex for very casual audience, so why leave league? Most people jumped in, liked the freshness but at some point got back to league/dota or leave the genre completely for fortnite/pubg. I think something similar to mobile legends would be much better at that time. Very simple mechanics, small map, fast games. But again, I personally like the game they created, I just think the audience wasnt there, which is sad

StarCraft brood war wasn’t waning in popularity when StarCraft 2 came out and it certainly wasn’t a solved game. SC2 only became more popular outside of Korea. If anything the SC2 pro scene in Korea died pretty quickly with Brood war still to this day being much more popular than SC2. The game has definitely not gotten stale by any sense of the term. Blizzard’s focus on SC2 came from a wish to not be shut out of the distribution and streaming of the esports scene. StarCraft Brood War was illegally being shown on cable and tournaments being run without permission from Blizzard. Blizzard tried to sue to get either royalties or StarCraft off the air but lost the suit. SC2 represented a way for blizzard to reclaim the rights to organize tournaments and broadcast matches for StarCraft since they would be able to start everything instead of coming late to the party. The irony of SC2, a game made to be an esport, being less popular in the country that made the franchise an esport is palpable. It somewhat mirrors what happened with Dota 2 in a way

Value didnt steal shit from Blizz, in fact, Ashenvale is a moba map, and was blizzards attempt to take (steal) 'dota' and add it into world of warcraft.. but it was too hard for them to work it out and they abandoned it leaving it as just another leveling zone in Azeroth

don't mind me yapping but in my opinion, Valve should've taken advantage of the Warcraft 3 Refunded fiasco and upgraded the DotA 2 Arcade, Map Editor, and Model Editor to grab the bleeding players of WC3 and bank on the custom game scene; and it's still a total mistake to kill the Arcade by banning monetization when Valve could've just moderated and taxed on them instead anyway, hope Valve does something funny and make an RTS campaign series for DotA 2 with a dedicated Co-op mode like in Starcraft 2, and even an open world MMO for DotA 2 lore btw, there was also another Warcraft 3 custom game - Pokemon Defense, that someone used as inspiration for DotA Chess in DotA 2 Arcade that eventually made it into its own Auto Chess mobile game, DotA Underlords, League's Teamfight Tactics, and even Mobile Legends Magic Chess also, I believe that the time Icefrog asked Blizzard for collaboration, Activision already assimilated Blizzard, no?

Both LoL and Dota2 developers had to go through many years of experimentation to optimize game balance, hero/item variety and complexity. When blizzard announced heroes of the storm, I thought there is no way they can possibly put up a refined game without those years of learning and tuning. Especially they had the game balance manager for sc2 for the job, who had trouble making sc2 balanced at the competitive level imo

It's really, really heartbreaking. My first PC game was Starcraft and Half-Life. Those 2 games really greatest games for me all time. And I always watched Starcraft ESports.
