How venoms kill - Venom 101

Venom... the word sends chills up your spine at the mere mention of it. And with good reason. Its aim is to incapacitate its victims and boy does it work a treat. What's really interesting is that not all venoms are equal and not all work the same way. They're as diverse as the animals that deliver it. From clotting blood, causing paralysis and destroying living cells. It's a fascinating world that Assoc. Professor Jamie Seymour knows a thing or ten about, after all that's his shtick. So given that he's a fun-loving sharing kind of guy he given us a bit of a lesson, kind a like a venom 101 of his world (which is venomology and toxinology which are tricky words to say let alone spell) showing us how they work on their victims which sometimes include the human-kind, and the results are..... all sorts of awesome! He also sets us straight on the difference venom and poison, which we will now be able to use with so much confidence, the world will think he has been cloned!

It actually sounds pretty interesting to be a toxicologist. First time i saw a video where you were featured, was in a smarter every day video, and when i heard you made your own channel i subscribed instantly. It's rare that you see a person with so much love for his/her job, and that is how every teacher should be like, because that's how people listen and learn. you could just as well be a boring person who's like "yeah here are some venom, see you next time" but you take some real examples of it, i think it was really interesting to watch a heart stop beating, blood clotting, and real examples of people who's been stung or punctured by these animals and watch the effect of the venom. So thanks for these videos, there is not one single day that goes by where science fails to impress me, and teach me something

oh, I completely understand that one frog had to be sacrificed for such a video to be made, It was really interesting to see it hooked up to a monitor meant for a mouse. These are not the types of machine that we are used to see in everyday life. Overall very interesting stuff, I instantly subscribed after watching the video, I wish you good luck with your youtube videos, and hopefully this can help the cause and draw the very needed attention to research into venoms and toxins.

venoms are not dangerous if you touch them. They need to make a way into your blood system to deal real damage. that is why often it is okay for predators to eat snakes and scorpions, the digestive system ruins the venom. This is contrast to poison, which can be dangerous on contact. your skin is a remarkible defense against many things, venoms included.
@mrvwbug4423
@mrvwbug4423 6 жыл бұрын
I probably wouldn't want to dissect a Cane Toad without gloves on though, Cane Toads are poisonous and knicking yourself on a scalpel or bone while touching the toad's skin could potentially expose you. These are the toads that people lick to cause hallucinations.

@jamieseymour2063

+Vectored Thrust thanks for your comments. Although australia has some seriously venomous beasts (we have the most venomous animal in ever group EXCEPT the scorpions and centipedes (and beofre you ask, I dont know why..............yet!) ) we only manage to kill baout 3-7 people on avergae a year from venomous animals! So although it may SEEM like a hazardous place to live/visit/holiday in, its actually really safe.

Great video! Just one question. With the toad, you injected the venom directly into the heart. In reality, a jellyfish will sting a superficial part of the body, thus vastly decreasing the amount f venom that will make it to the heart. How does this, combined with the fact that humans being much larger require more toxin, lead to death from box jellyfish sting? Is it that potent? Thanks!
@jamieseymour2063
@jamieseymour2063 8 жыл бұрын
+gregvs93 thanks for the support. Ok, I'll try and asnwer your question. The quantity we injected directly into the heart of the toad was really really small. It was actually a diluted sample (can not remember exactly but it was in the order of nanograms of venom. Big box jellyfish have a reasonably unique venom deposition system, ie the way the venom gets into the body is different from other jellyfish (and actually most venomous animals!). Venom from most venomous bites is deposited into muscles but for box jellyfish its deposited directly into the capillaries (you will have to trust me here, may be we will make a video to show you how!) as a result the venom from a big box jellyfish sting goes directly to your heart. Having said that, you need a big sting to cause death, upwards of 2 m (6 feet) of tentacles on an adult human to cause death.

Talk about fascinating-- watching the toad's heart slowly turn white and stop beating within seconds of the Irukandji jellyfish's venom being introduced was amazing to watch, seriously. Thanks for another fantastic video!

+strfiretiger123 Thanks for the support! Without seeming like a smarty pants though, its actually the venom from the big box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) which causes the heart to stop beating :-)

This is fascinating! I'd love to see even more videos going in depth into how these poisons work on the cellular level. It's cool and a bit scary how many vital processes in our body can easily be stopped by tiny tiny amounts of a particular substance

+Jamie Seymour please don't thank me, I loved the work you did with Destin on Smarter Every Day and videos like yours allow me to learn and remain fascinated in the world we live in... Jesus Christ, what happened to the blood when he introduced venom is the one of the most chilling things I've ever seen. To think that that's what happens to the human body is just to scary to imagine.
