Over 4,000 Volkswagen workers in Tennessee just joined the UAW. They’re the first American workers to win a union at a non-union car company in decades. This historic victory will change the auto industry, and the future of American labor.

The wealthy-class billionaires & millionaires will NEVER willingly give up their addictions (and neither will most working-class westerners for that matter). Good luck getting the RW-extremist Repubs and moderate-RW Dems out of the way; 99% of them are millionaires funded by billionaires. BOTH major US political-parties(and a few smaller ones) are bought, owned, bribed, and controlled by wealthy-class-RWers. Workers are finally realizing that the "bosses" are working for themselves and not them. Record profits for businesses without increasing benefits for employees was becoming too common. It would be great if employers genuinely appreciated their employees but corporations have become absolutely fixated on short term profits, often on the back of their employees.

I wish all factories would unionize. But VW was the easiest challenge on that front: All other VW plants worldwide have been unionized, Chattanooga was the odd one out. Also VW wanted to have UAW unionize Chattanooga in 2013, but Tennessee and US politicians fought back and stopped the move. I'm so happy the workers finally voted for unionization this time, this has been long overdue. But VW is famous for working with their unions more than other companies, so while the unionizers sure did a hard and great job, while they were not really kicking in doors that were already open, the doors were not secured with a drop bar either. The next unionization of a non-US automaker's US-plant will be an even harder battle. But this is a fantastic step in the right direction and gets the campaign for unionizing foreign automakers in the US up to a good start. Carry the momentum on!
@sgs8747
@sgs8747 Ай бұрын
@@Dr.-Ing._M 100% see your point. I kept seeing during the coverage that while VW did do the typical anti-union PR, it was more tame vs. Starbucks/Amazon. The others will be a harder battle for sure and I imagine already the UAW priced in losses. While insping to hear him talk about the big 3 becoming the big 12, he knows the odds are slim but at the same time if we can use this momentum to add to the now Big 4 and make it into say the Big 6-7, the clock moves decades in the right direction.

@@sgs8747 Activist investors? I don't think there are many of those. Some might have ideals but those ideals will very quickly fall away if they feel their power is threatened in any way. I was a bit afraid of it, but unless you were management, you had to join or find a non-union house which was challenging to say the least. Union labor started out being the backbone of the labor movement after WWII. Their association with organized crime became common knowledge as the mob bosses saw an opportunity to make💲and ruled over them wherever they could. My experience was a positive one and I never regretted it & am a believer! Union labor can reshape a nation. If done correctly, there are no losers! VOTE☑️BLUE☑️

I'm not sure how big the cut was that Adecco was taking from us, but I know that it was substantial. What really sucks about having a bullshit 2 tiered pay system like that is that the cheaper employees get abused constantly. We worked 6-7 day weeks often with mandatory overtime and STILL couldn't afford the most basic costs of living even with rent split 3 ways at the time. This companies exploit labor at an extreme level and rake in billions in profits while their employees can't even afford rent, let alone purchase one of the vehicles they build every day. It was honestly pathetic, and I will never, ever consider purchasing a Honda because of my experiences there.

@@vart7767There are reasons why people aren’t doing that: Mexico’s improving economy is giving workers more leverage and that is in turn making some of the advantage less extreme than in the past.

I expect that there will be a LOT of FUD about how this will kill auto manufacturing in the US. Remember that the big 3 screamed about this during the negotiations, but about a month after the contract was ratified, GM spent $10B on stock buybacks. So, giving the workers their fair share was going to kill the company, but they had $10B for buybacks even with the new contract.

Detroiter here. This is great news. American auto companies have been working with unions, while foreign automakers have been able to unfairly exploit their workforce to gain a competitive advantage against GM and Ford. Buy union-made cars, people.

As a UAW member working for one of the big three, I am so goddamn proud of them. I really believe this is just the first of many. All the autoworkers deserve what we have at the very least, and we all deserve to continue the fight for better. All workers deserve this. I have been loving watching unions becoming a more popular thing. ✊️ Solidarity forever! (Edited due to accidentally putting automakers when I meant autoworkers)
