The Watergate campaign finance scandals led to a landmark law designed to limit the influence of money in politics. Decades later, some say the scandal isn’t what’s illegal, it’s what’s legal. Lesson plan for educators: bit.ly/RR-watergate

"Return on our investment", politicians aren't stocks that you can buy and sell. Government isn't a business.

Probably unrelated but I might've met Guru's good friend Roger Stone in 1971 at a wedding for the daughter of Robert H. Finch in Pasadena, California. President Richard M. Nixon attended. Dad made certain I met Attorney General John Mitchell and his wife Martha. Also met Press Secretary Ron Ziegler. Haldeman and Erlichman too. Drank 27 glasses of champaign. Never got that drunk again. 3 day hangover. Nixon and Finch were best friends. Finch moved to Washington D.C. to become Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare after being Lt. Governor under Ronald Reagan for 2 years. I was depressed after losing my best friend Kevin Finch. Those first 2 years in Sacramento were fabulous. Nixon's first pick for running mate was Robert Finch but Finch told Nixon he needs someone from the east coast so Nixon picked Spiro Agnew. I remember being at Finch's house in Pasadena and the telephone would ring and one of the three Finch daughters would yell "Daddy, your friend Dick is on the phone". Thought that was a funny name. Forgot where I was going with this. Oh yeah. When I met the President of the United States, I wish I told him if he gets in trouble, to simply tell the truth. Don't coverup the Watergate break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters. Tell everyone that G. Gordon Liddy is out of control and you've got nothing to hide. If only I had a time machine...

Excellent vid, thanks for explaining this. It's a tough call. People need to know who to vote for and why. That means campaigning to get your name and positions out, which cost money. You want people to support candidates they like, but you don't want bribery. The last presidential candidate *not* to campaign was Alf Landon in 1936. He added his name to the ballot and then disappeared. FDR crushed him. Never again.

Government serves the rich special interests. It’s one of the reasons even small town government no longer effectively represents its people. The only interests being heard are the ones with money and that often means corruption.

They should had gone much further by doing the following 1) Fine corporations ten dollars for every dollar they illegally donated to a candidate with strict limits on how much they can pass to workers and consumers 2) pass laws for public tax funded campaigns for all candidates 3) make disclosure requirements on par with countries like Denmark and Canada
