Can we use classroom walls to immerse our children inside a dividing cell to teach them biology? Can we hack photosynthesis and speed up the growth of plants to feed the whole world? Joe Crossley believes that the answer lies in projection mapping. At the intersection of art, science and technology, there is an exciting future taking shape and new solutions for old problems are appearing from the light technology now available. Joe Crossley / Visual Artist has been in and around the leading edge of the new media art movement since 2006. In 2009 his personal work GEO-GLO marked his arrival on the art scene with coverage from the likes of The Creators Project and VIVID Sydney.
Since then his works have branched out into ‘actual reality’ projection mapping, working with indigenous communities of Australia, including his VIVID Path to the Future project, a widely celebrated ‘open-source’ projection mapping film festival.
Joe has also created acclaimed works for the Sydney Opera House with Intel, this time for Sound Cells, Australia's largest 3D print broadcast units, and True Life, an ongoing work using naturally occurring processes.
This year he was named EPSON’s first official projection mapping artist which will see him attend a number of events around the world showcasing his works of art.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The 2011 “Skrillex Cell” is still the best projection mapping I’ve ever seen

Literally thinking about it when he showed the cubes xD that thing is awesome, loved the red bull video about it. also the motion suit and all the work, build up, tear down, next day another concert. over 300 in a year. What a world!!

The photosynthesis projection mapping with visual feedback and AI/ML dynamics is quite fascinating. I would add that there's a way to build surfaces as well. If you can map existing surfaces (or design one), you can also project that light to reproduce that surface with a photocatalyst, much how 3d resin printers work, but potentially at a larger scale or with different construction dynamics.

Hey! I've been digging deeper into motion graphics, just watched "Box" by Bot & Dolly & GMUNK, and your video was next in autoplay. I'm so glad it was. I'm a video producer for a church in the US, and I'm always hungry to find new ways to use tech to communicate. Thanks for the inspiration and the the hard work, Joe!

Do you have any respurces that you've gathered to make this happen without a $30,000 projector? I work at a community college and we are trying to use this for an annual scholarship fundraising event.

My first experience with project mapping was when I visited Reims in France with my fiance. After seeing the Regalia show, I almost wished I'd proposed there instead of Paris.

This is fantastic however it is well known that speed growing plants does affect quality and shortens lifespan. I still think that it can be used to perfectly meter light for perfect rated growth which would be very cool indeed.

My experience has been that quality can be maintained by careful monitoring of all variables. Increasing a plant's growth with increased light has diminishing returns without also maintaining sufficient nutrient supply, water, pH, air circulation, temperature, and so on. Optimizing those given the unknowns about biology and limited feedback from the plant is challenging but it's the kind of problem where AI/ML really shines. This idea has a ton of merit.

Your intuition is spot on, and this tech is actually 2+ decades in the making. NASA uses laser/LED pulse lights on the ISS to grow plants and even to help astronauts maintain . Photon radiation of certain wavelengths at certain pulse speeds is FDA certified to speed up and assist in bone matrix growth and nerve cell regeneration, already used for soldiers, pro athletes and astronauts. DARPA, the Dept of Defense project, did some of this in the early '90s.
