Today I am chatting about why and how we do Memory Work in our Morning Basket. I share my favorite memory work system, how we have tweaked it to fit our needs, and also our process for memorizing.

Do you do memory work in your homeschool and if so, what is your favorite piece? Mine is a toss-up between Psalm 100 and "The Yak" by Hilaire Belloc.

We love Andrew's poetry memorization program, too! Psalm 100 is awesome...I had my son copy it for his cursive practice just a few weeks ago. I also love Psalm 103! We're also enjoying some Robert Louis Stevenson poetry 😊.

Thinking about memory work as storing up protection against loneliness in the midst of suffering is such a powerful idea! Thank you!

I remember when I was a young kid, we had this Mother Goose doll, it was literally a Mother Goose with a bonnet on its head and it was a cassette player, it would move its mouth and eyes while the cassette with nursery rhymes was playing. I would play each nursery rhyme over and over, until eventually I memorized all the rhymes on my own. Lol! I can still recite them! I ordered the Poetry memorization curriculum and am excited to use it with my 3,4, and 8 year old this homeschool season.

We use this! But each kid has their own folder with the poems printed out and once they can recite the poem on their own they get to color that page. I don’t quiz them through the day or anything, it all just happens as we are going through it in the morning. It takes a lot of time for us since each kid recites all poems that they know. I’d love to add in some scripture too, I need some verse ideas, I have a couple in mind but I’d love to hear more. We are also going to start memorizing short poems in Italian after every 10th IEW poem, I figure it’ll help them learn Italian too.

How would this fit into a classical conversations program? We're already doing a lot of memory work for each subject but I'd love to add in more poetry.

Julie Quates we didn’t do CC but the reason we stopped for a while was because we were doing a similar program of memory work. I was not able to do both at the same time.

@@PamBarnhill ok thank you so much. I love memory work in general but think ill look into this to just gently incorporate some poetry memory work as well but not as a full on curriculum. Like you said sometimes its easier if someone else picks the poems for you.

Pam, I know this is an older video but I have a question. If you took a break did you still go back and review the poems that you already learned? Do you children remember the poems?
@PamBarnhill
@PamBarnhill 3 жыл бұрын
Yes to both. They might need a little more review on the ones we were learning right before the break, but they pick it up again pretty quickly.

Did you ever upload the video on how you did memory work when your children were younger?
