Trying Not To Sink

Trying Not To Sink

Күн бұрын

We discuss three different docking situations that we had traveling from St. Augustine to Hilton Head. Two dockings were a little tricky due to weather and currents. The other was a piece of cake!

Our Story:
My name is Ed, I am an ex-musician, turned politician, turned tax account, who now imagines himself a sea-captain. Lyn, is an ex-model, turned photographer and the love of my life.
We have spent the last three years traveling on our 65' Hatteras Yacht and it has been terrifying. We have faced down storms, been stranded at sea, towed off shoals and run aground by careless boaters.
But it has been magical as well. We have explored places known only by those who travel by water, met incredible people along the way, and learned so much about boating - and even more about ourselves.
And to think - until three years ago, Lyn, and I, never even owned a boat.
We met when we were 21. I was a starving musician, on my way To Los Angeles to starve some more. Lyn was a model, waitressing tables and dreaming of adventure. We went on our first date to the Jersey Shore, and spent the night on a boat her father was restoring. That date has never ended.
We traveled the country together, and settled for a few years in Hollywood, where she discovered her love for photography, and I discovered that music was not going to be my career. We put down roots in Bucks County Pennsylvania. We built a house together, raised three children and became your typical American family. She opened a photography business and I opened an accounting firm.
On a vacation to Key West, we met a woman who lived on her boat. She had been an emergency room nurse for many years but decided she had had enough. She sold everything, bought a boat and sailed to Florida. We were fascinated. It seemed so romantic, so us. The seed was planted.
Flash forward a few years and the children are grown. Lyn retired from photography and sold her business. And me, well, I was only working three months out of the year and looking for a new adventure.
So, we bought our first boat. A Carver 355. No experience, and completely clueless. We hired a captain to bring us to our local marina and we were determined to learn how to operate her. We practiced in an empty marina for a couple of days and then, we just went for it! We figured, if we liked boating as much as we imagined, we would trade up to our dream boat. Two years later we did just that.
This video vlog is our story. Boating has become our passion. We invite you to share this journey with us, as we explore the waterways of the Atlantic and Caribbean, having the time of our lives, while "Trying Not To Sink."
Cheers!
Ed and Lyn.

Ed, you are correct. You are an expert with your boat. Understanding how your boat handles is key. Take your time and don't rush is the secret to docking and boat handling at close quarters.

Well done,Captain,I might have done some differently, but you got the job done, and didn't break anything.I had a 50'DeFeverOffshore cruiser in the 1980 s.Most of the time,my brother served as first mate.He had worked on shrimp boats,so he was proficient at that.He knew nothing about navigation and boat handling.Once, crossing the Gulf of Mexico,he asked me if I would show him some about navigating.I,had learned a few years earlier from NavalROTC.I was too old to enroll in the program, butI could take some of the classes as electivesThe DeFever, had anTransit satelite navigation receiver,so navigation was simply keeping track of your position on the charts.I started him out by showing himmhow to plot a position, and when.Underway,I kept a current track, and took a fix and updated the track every hour, making any course corrections needed. After a few days,he came to me and"You really know this stuff, butI can't learn it from you"Imtold him if he ever wanted to try again' Et me know. Then heasked me how I knew what to do when docking the boat. I told him,it's simple physics.Look at the situation, and formulate a plan. I said, this is a big heavy boat, with not a lot of horsepower to muscle it around,t but it's enough to do the job..I said best thing you,is stay ahead of the boat.Be aware of what the boat is doing, and what you need to do compensate for it.In the Caribbean,we noticed all the super yachts had radio headsets for the deck crew at least, and some had them for all crew.Inthought we were too small to use them.Though at times,I was tempted to try someThose times were rare since we knew each other so well.By the way,Inhad a 50 ton Masters Licence, whenI had the DeFever.Ilet it expire, and then let the grace period expire,so I would have to start from scratch if I wanted to replace it now.Iliked your video, and have sunscribed

I don't have thrusters on my 72 so it is imperative that the dock hand tie to the correct cleat. My wife points to the cleat she wants it on before she throws it and says the Captain wants it tied there and make it Fast, as in tie it tight. Once fast I go in gear and the boat lays againt the dock and we can take our Tim throwing and tying the other lines as the engine keeps us hard against.

My other thing is trying to cause any damage to the boat when switching!! I’ve gone from center console to M/Y, now the games begin!! Great informative video. How do you like your new headsets? What are the make and model and thoughts on if they are a keeper, or you’d get something different next time? Also we plan on going to the Bahamas for the first time, very, very nervous about most all of it! I will do my due diligence and keep a great watch out while trusting my nav equipment and Navionics, any thoughts on if there are special sites I can go to for better safe navigation and or maybe someone else’s recent successful tracks thru the Bahamas? Great videos, much appreciated!

We use these: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LOKU8KQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 We are very happy with them. They seem to be the standard in boating headsets. I do not know of any web sites that might be helpful. I know we have posted quite a few videos. The Bahamas is relatively easy. The main thing is to watch the weather carefully for the big crossings (Gulf Stream, Providence Channel, etc.) Otherwise, just be careful about the reef heads. They are marked on the charts. We always do our research, and when possible, ask the locals or other boaters for advice. Talking with boaters at the bar has always been very helpful. You are usually speaking with someone who just did what you are about to do, or someone who is getting ready to do it. Everything is scary to us, until we do it once. Then we wonder what we were worried about. For example, we were very worried about crossing the Gulf Stream the first time. We read how bad the waves could be and how we should start out further south and ride it up on an angle, etc. Then we talked to another Hatteras captain who said we were listening to sail boaters. "You're in a motor yacht with 1200 horsepower, it doesn't care about a 2-3 knot Gulf Stream. Just don't leave in northerly winds." And he was absolutely right.

Bow thruster? We don’t need no stinkin bow thruster. Serious question have you ever looked into how big and expensive of a thruster you would need to move the bow of your boat which probably weighs close to a 100,000 pounds? I always thought bow thrusters were more for single engine, light weight boats. I enjoy your boat repair videos and the info on the different marinas and towns. Thanks
