As a viewer and a relatively smaller techtuber, I appreciate seeing larger channels and yourself/team for covering this. You conveyed very well how the system works for reviewing products as well as sponsored content (I mean specifically dollars exchanged). I am grateful to subscribers and viewers that have helped enabled me to get the opportunity to work various brands. I'm also grateful for the feedback from brands that chose not to work with me at various points in time, "no's" are important too. I can totally attest the point of this being a business and that when your channel is smaller, not a very profitable one (ha). At ~2,500 subscribers, my channel is very much so a labor of love rather than some kind of huge income generator. Like many others, IT by day, KZfaq by night :) Not that your content isn't entertaining and educational - it most certainly is but, the previous video asking the viewership about what they want to see and this one about how Tech KZfaq (and KZfaq in general) actually work have been very well thought out and put together. Looking forward to the rest of the 31 days of Techmas!

Jay, one of your best qualities is that you are VERY real. I remember a similar topic and you stressing that you will turn down a sponsor of they "convince" you to make the product appear to be the best even though it's truly not. A lot of people don't think about the journey you have made. Keep it up, even with the shortage of products I still look forward to reviews

I've always understood that everything you get from a company implies a unit of work that you will have to perform. Whether or not it's in the form of a showcase, ad, build, or whatever...you've never received anything "for free". You get a 3080? Great, now go do 20 hours of work on a review that shows what it can do. You might get to keep it after that (if you're lucky), but more videos can be produced afterwards which will still need hours of labor to produce. Trust me, you earn everything you're sent!

Even those considering social media / KZfaq etc careers etc would find this content a bit of an eye opener, especially younger viewers who think this work is simply get a product you want when you want it and it’s free. This is my "Twocents" on what I want right now for content. I'll say this, as someone who is probably the same height and weight as you. Your take on computer "accessories" like your PC chair review means more than anything to me. As a "Tall" man (6 foot 4 and 250lb) finding a chair, desk (honestly anything) is a nightmare. For me to find a desk that even come close to my body type, I needed to buy a 1.5-2.5k adjustable desk (That just shows how much I'm willing to pay extra for a slab of wood with legs) to even come close to having a piece of furniture fit my body correctly. But also on the other end of the spectrum, it's nice to hear Phill's take on something even if it doesn't relate to me.

It's nice to hear how things are happening BTS. I've heard similar stuff from other Tech tubers about how *Free* stuff is not really Free. The businesses that give you something are expecting you to make a video or two on it to try and expose as many people as possible. Part of my problem sometimes has been since I built my first computer I just want to keep building computers and to see someone get a *Free* component sometimes drives me nuts. I do end up pulling myself back and realize that you guys have to spend a lot of time to build the channel up to be able to work with the companies to get the stuff to review. It's not as if you are using all of the components to build a thousand computers for you to hoard. Also I do appreciate that you do all of the giveaways of components or PC's. Hope everything continues going well for you guys. Keep up the good work. I do like the build video's because it helped me to build my computer. I also like the review videos of the different parts. It was nice to hear some of your opinions about who should consider upgrading their systems to a DDR5 system. I wasn't in a rush but it's nice to know as a pretty much pure gamer/youtuber watcher that I can wait a couple of years and upgrade the system when I start to replace parts in my current machine. Also as a kind of question related to the video itself and the giveaways that you do, Do you reach out to the companies like NZXT or Corsair and work something out with them similar to how you receive the parts for the review videos or do they reach out to you or is somewhat of a 50 50 type of thing?

As a small content creator myself I really enjoyed this video. My content is 4wd, camping, hiking etc. The reviews I have done so far have all been items I have purchased out of my own pocket and are 100% honest and "My Opinion". Some in my genre do accept products and push them to be amazing simply because they are paid to and sadly that reflects on all of us. I have no sponsors, no financial supporters etc although I do have a couple of companies I would love to work with because I believe in their products.

I always know that when you like a product, it’s because you genuinely like it, and that holds a lot more weight than some excited unboxing or 5 star anonymous review. Jay, I posted on the previous 'serious talk' video a couple of days ago about the suggestion of more content creator collabs.. after watching this video it would be great to see some collab videos discussing how you guys came to where you are today. Comparing your milestones with products, 'sponsorship', 'exclusivity' etc. Im curious to see if you all had a similar formula you followed and tweaked to get here today, relationships with manufacturers now, how you've grown together helping each other out etc. The community of the techtuber appears to be helping each other out, sticking up for each other, and that is a really interesting topic that I believe you should discuss and share across the channels.. eg. try get in on the WAN show, or get Paul or SteveGN on your own talk show or just to a meet and greet at a microcenter or something and walk through the store just talking about your transitions to where you are today exploring the products instore. Just a thought, let me know what you think!

The thing that pisses me off is when a reviewer does not clarify in the start if they got the product for free or if they bought it. I'v followed you on and off since the early days. You are still refreshingly interesting and I know what I'm getting from you. Keep doing what your doing. People's tastes will change. In a lot of cases we deviate towards people with similar outlooks and perspectives. I used your videos to do my first full on water cooling build. I ranted on your channel. When my damm yellow water cooling liquid was going orange and you where the only KZfaqr to call them out and offer to help them make it better. I even was there when you did your cycling phase. If you deliver what I like and enjoy to watch awesome. I will like and enjoy the content and share it with like minded folks. If I don't like it. That's also cool as well. You can never please100% of the folks. Folks like me who have been here since the early days will go away and come back. New people will come in. You can never please everyone. Keep doing what your doing and I think in today's world. Transparency is more valuable then anything else a person can come out with. I don't mean show folks your bank balance. I mean be upfront on how you get stuff... Mahem and thermaltake. You guys know what you did lol Rip caselabs. Stay awesome Jay.

So, this is interesting. As someone who used to review tech stuff (while back), I hear this sentiment all the time in comments. What I wonder is, what difference does it make (do you think)? If I review PSU's or CPU's or flash drives or Fans - what difference does it make if they are given/loaned or bought? Funny thing is, I know it makes a difference, but I am thinking not the difference you think it makes. You would be surprised. Also, I think (and things may have changed) that you don't have disclose unless there is monetary or large compensation (like a car). Now I am just rambling, but there are all kinds of deals and contracts and policies you probably are not aware of (and I am not aware of). Sometimes we had to return product. Sometimes we had to destroy it (I had to destroy a fan once and send a picture - lol). Sometimes we could keep it (often). Sometimes we could keep it but it was not actually ours. Never allowed to sell it (totally unethical). Often we could give it away - but with the understanding it had no warranty unless it was for a giveaway project. No matter how you slice it - it was not income. How many CPU's does a person need? If you can't sell them, they won't buy dinner. And, even if you could, they are not worth enough to to keep a place going. For the most part the value of the hardware is small fry unless you are a tiny site/channel. If I started a channel now (as 1 person), and reviewed say a mother board, the resale value of the board would barely pay for my time doing a review.

That's nice they let you keep what you review. When I use to do reviews in the 90's I almost always had to send it back to them afterwards. Software I was always able to keep, but 90% the hardware had to go back. Every super positive review I ever did, I was accused of being paid. Advertising dollars were super hard to come by back then, and I never made a dime creating content. In fact I was out money every month. As my popularity grew, my hosting fee's kept increasing until I had to quit all together. The only reason I did what I did, was I liked getting stuff before other people, and I enjoyed informing people about tech that I thought was cool! I totally respect the way Jay operates, and I often find my views and way of thinking usually align with his. Keep up doing the good work Jay!

I remember watching that video way back when and how excited you were to be getting anything for the channel. You gave it an honest review even though it was your first free piece of tech. Thanks for not changing over the years and you honesty back then and now is why I'm still here...

I’d be interested in seeing personalized advice to what you’d suggest to people to upgrade rigs - like if I sent my specs, you could say in a video that I could inexpensively upgrade the RAM, but don’t go passed 3200 MHz because my MB can’t handle it. There are nuances like that I just can’t grasp and advice like that would be great and I think a fun watch!

"How we get free parts" Easy, just start doing something that has no guaranteed success and requires commitment of lots of time, maybe as much as several children at once. Start doing that 10 years ago and never give up, no matter what. There will always be people that envy someone's results when they haven't put in even a portion of the same effort.

Thank you for this, it's always great to see how the sausage is made (even if it includes hog slaughter.) But as a followup, how would you recommend a small channel get started? I'd considered doing a hardware review channel and building/selling custom builds on the side (or maybe even filmed) to finance it.

Jay I really appreciate your candor in this video showing how you get free parts how it works because a lot of KZfaq reviewer’s don’t really tell everything like you did. Because I think they like to keep it close to the chest rather than tell their viewers how they get their stuff and how it works and that. Because myself I always was wondering how channels like yours get free stuff from manufacturers from computers to video cards to memory and so forth but now I know! And thanks. 😀
