We have been down that own authority route. What you guys are doing now with Landstar is probably the best deal. When you get your own authority, you do have a ton more responsibilities like you said. We found ourselves to be more profitable under a carrier, simply because of the costs for insurance. When you only have one truck it's not worth all the hassles. We sometimes miss the freedoms of having our own authority, but don't miss those headaches!

You can just set up your own authority basically start your own carrier,, it doesn't cost too much to get setup, do all that good stuff like IFTA, dot number, and Mc number, cargo insurance, all those fancy special permits exc... and grab all the LTL freight if it's worth running, all the LTL stuff I see is like 80 cents a mile or less, Go 100% independent and run your own trucking thing instead of getting a small slice of the pie might as well take the whole 100% of the rate

Since you two been in the expediting business for sometime you should, write a book or have a podcast about the expediting business starting from the idea of starting the business and going through the steps. Step one, step two, step three. Etc. that would really help folks Who want to get into the expediting business and I know you talk about other companies but if you can really go a little deeper into it not to get you fired or lose your accounts. But I’ve been seriously thinking about it myself but it seems like every time you go on KZfaq to get an idea about going into the business it’s all over the map lol it’s not like in order what you should do first and how about going at it. Instead of working for a private owner but working for yourself, getting insurance your authority etc. I think that’s why a lot of people fail at going into Trucking is because they don’t have anybody to talk to to start off at step one. Whether it be semi or straight truck. And it almost seems like it’s a trucking secret lol. Ya have a good day now. Drive carefully

very good information , i love the way you guys are explaining what you do ,,,I personally like being an owner operator with my own authority ,,, the permits and the paperwork can be a pain in the ass because i do it all myself with paper , no electronic logs aside from my driver log ,i'm fortunate , my insurance rates are pretty decent because i rarely haul any high value cargo ,and never any hazmat stuff ,,I've gotten a reputation for being the guy who will haul the crap loads nobody else wants ,,stuff like old farm equipment and scrap metal

I always strive to be safe ,, in 25 years of driving ,,everything from 4 wheelers and farm tractors to semis I have never yet had an accident that was my fault , and never a speeding ticket in over 1 million miles ,,I'd rather drive slow and save on noise and wear on my truck ,,today I hauled another load of scrap to the junkyard for someone ,friggin nightmare stacks of crushed cars ,,i always have to scrub my flat decks afterward cause they are a greasy mess ,,,the idiot that crushed them didn't verify that the fluids were all drained so once you put them through a 200 ton crusher they sorta bleed all over ,, this particular guy pays really well and i get regular jobs from him so i don't complain about the greasy mess ,,usually quick turnaround short runs where i don't have to load or unload ,, i just gotta sling chains ,,and unlike most guys who will only use 2 or 3 chains on a stack of cars i'll use 5 or 6 ,,,,I had a good friend a few years back who was nearly killed by a stack of cars that fell off a truck that were poorly chained and the chains broke

You can find freight other places, you can go to get loaded, they have to be Landstar approved, then you just have to get one of your agents to book it. As long as Landstar gets their part of the load. They usually don't pay as well though as our boards.Or we used to be able to, we haven't done it in a long time.

idk if such a thing could be done but lets say....curious if you added three more drop axles could you haul more weight, i see 5 and 6 axle dump trucks pass me all the time, they literally look like caterpillars so many axles lol, jus saying, hell.... if you invested a bunch of money into your truck and got a bunch of drop axles you could prolly haul loads as heavy as a dump truck loads, lots of very heavy loads that are very short in length, that would totally expand your freight compatibly options.

How was Panther as a company as far as a starting point for getting into Expediting and did you make a livable wage ? And is there any other companies you'd suggest to get started with besides Panther? Also where does the majority of your loads come from when your at home in Waco, ( e.g. Dallas / Houston) etc. ? I'm 56 and would like to get on the fast track to doing something different than what I had been doing for the majority of my career. My last full time job was actually driving a straight truck ( + 26.0" ) delivering caskets of all things in Houston and all over Southeast Texas from Port Arthur to Raymondville down in the valley which the company required me to have a class B CDL , unfortunately the company got bought out by a competitor and they ended up closing our warehouse location just when business was looking down , (little morbid humor there) Ha,ha. Thanks for taking my questions H & J , looking forward to your reply and Keep safe . J.T. , HouTx. 🚚🚚🚚

Your truck only carries 7000 lbs ?? What is the gross weight of your truck ?? Need a slightly bigger truck maybe ??
@ronfullerton3162
@ronfullerton3162 6 жыл бұрын
If they go bigger, the costs all go up; prices, taxes, permits, maintenance, etc. And the small expedite loads pay well. So going bigger would not necessarily reap a bigger pay check. Plus getting around, parking, and handling is easier than semi tractor trailer rig. I could see crawling out of my eighteen wheeler into something like their rig and enjoying life more.

Leasing from a company is nothing more than a glorified company driver What you pay a week i pay a month i have a 2016 w900 was using celidons dot, ins. I quit them kept my truck and i get loads from ch robison

chicken scratch Totally agree about leasing from a carrier. We don’t lease we own our truck. Don’t know of any Expedite carrier that even has a lease option for straight trucks & the lease options for tractor trailers who are with an Expedite carrier lease through a 3rd party not the carrier.
