We took on a challenge of using AI to help create every shot of this retro sci-fi trailer:
• SOL KILLER | AI Trailer
AI TOOLS
Midjourney - For all the base image creation, generating matte paintings and set extensions, and for creating some of the VFX assets.
Adobe Photoshop Generative Fill - For extending set extensions, and matte paintings, and adding static elements to shots.
Eleven Labs - AI voice generator used to create the narration.
PixelCut - For upscaling images.
LeiaPix - For adding motion to some still images.
NON-AI TOOLS
CapCut - For all the video editing, sound design, color grading and additional effects.
Adobe After Effects - For compositing and adding VFX elements.
Video Copilot - For 3D animation inside After Effects.

To show each motion effect in detail would take forever, so we just covered as many of them as we could without making this a thirty minute video. Haha. We already have other videos on compositing and VFX, but we’ll probably make more specific to this if there’s enough interest.

As it should. AI was never meant to replace the artist but being a tool in extension to the artist's skills and creative vision. If the artist can be replaced by AI or is over reliant on it, then that only means they're not very good at their craft.

While that’s true, it can of course be used to replace many more artists being needed on a single project by expanding the ability of each individual artist, just like the invention of digital filmmaking. How it’s used is of course up to each individual, and then eventually AI itself.

@@rayge It replaces many things, saves time on many other things, but like all tools, they are only as good as the hands of the artist or craftsman they’re in. That is until of course more AI become artists themselves that do not require input from humans at all. Then both human and AI artists will co-exist as well, but to a far greater degree than they do today.

Honestly it's this level of grandeur that's been missing from Star Wars (well good stories wouldn't hurt). Some of the best movies in history have no dialogue, just grand vistas, and sweeping music to convey emotion, such as Luke Skywalker looking up at the twin sun's setting and we immediately know the longing and sadness that he may be stuck on this moisture farm forever. Of course, these shots can't exist in a vacuum, dialogue still needs to drive character and plot. It seems sometimes when I watch new movies that the filmmakers didn't even study these basic concepts in film school. Too often, every split second is filled with dialogue as an excuse to get to the next action scene, meaning there's no drama or tension, no space to allow the audience to experience the emotion. The other mistake made excessively today is over the top CGI. For example, at the end of Star Trek Picard season 1 and Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, a thousand ships show up for the battle. It's a mess, and the number of ships actually takes AWAY from the drama. How many times in Star Trek did ONE ship decloak in front of the enterprise menacingly to great effect. CGI is a fantastic tool, but it requires careful application so as not to detract from the story.

Couldn’t agree more! This is such a beautiful comment. Thank you. We feel the exact same way. Hayao Miyazaki does this phenomenally in his films. Genndy Tartakovsky as well with his shows Primal and Samural Jack. Miyazaki calls this “ma”, which is emptiness or negative space in films. We actually have plans for an entire film universe for SOL KILLER, and they will be filmed exactly that way; very sparse dialogue with a massive emphasis on visual storytelling, which after all, is the entire point of filmmaking, and it’s what separates it from every other medium.

It's like sitting in a beautiful SMEG Kitchen, having a pantry full of exotic spices, but having no idea about cooking. AI is NOT going to make any Joe into the next Steven Spielberg. It is just a tool, you still need to know the basics and have creativity. AI is no substitution for creativity and storytelling.

Great video! I was wondering how much of the effects/moves were done in graphics/compositing programmes ? There are parallaxes in the movements that wouldn’t be achieved with the key framing you demonstrate. Are you using layers of video and moving them for that or doing this in a 3D programme ? Are all the explosive ‘clouds’ jet trails stock assets or generated. These are not ai right ? Did you do any movement with ai generated video? I’ve found it difficult to do that with existing tools. Thank you so much!! Things like the explosions, spaceship contrails, dinosaur, creature wings, etc, are all VFX assets composited into the scenes. For the parallaxing, I used two main techniques. The first is a web-based AI program called LeiaPix which creates parallax movement in 2D images. The second technique which I didn’t cover here, was that I would generate and image in Midjourney of a subject in an environment. I did this for example with the shot of the woman watching the spaceship fly up and explode. Then I upscaled the image in PixelCut. Then I brought the upscaled image back into Pixel Cut and used the Background Remover to get a new image of just the character on a transparent background. Then I brought the original upscaled image into Photoshop, selected around the character, and used generative fill to remove the character from the scene. I now had two upscaled shots, one of just the character, and one of just the background. This let me put the character on a layer above the background, and keyframe animate movement of each layer separately to create the parallax effect. @@liz4ward Definitely After Effects! It’s what we use for all our VFX. We actually learned from Andrew Kramer and his stuff at Video Copilot, so that’s a great place to start, and we’ll do more videos on VFX as well since a lot of people have been asking us questions about that. You’re probably also going to want to get Element 3D inside After Effects. That’s what we use for basically all our 3D VFX.

Nicely done! How did you all do the moving dinosaur at 4:43 and the reflections on the spaceship at 5:53? Are those Midjourney models, or other assets?

Thank you so much! The dinosaur is a separate VFX asset I composited in. The spaceship is a 3D model I animated in Element 3D inside After Effects, and I created the reflection by duplicating and flipping the initial model, and repositioning it at the correct angle. @@FILMCRUX Well, you know, I prefer to keep my imagination private, or at least not give my ideas away to those undeserving of them, unless of course they're willing to offer sufficient compensation. AI is pure stupidity. I sat at my computer for hours trying to get an AI art engine to draw what I asked it to. Although drawing hands is not my strong suit, I'd do a much better job; It is easier to sit down and draw the image myself.

@@artstation707 If that statement is any indication of your level of ideas, you’re unlikely to be compensated very well for them. It sounds like you’re just really bad at using the tools. We’ve seen young children use them with incredible success, so if you’re struggling that much with them, they may just not be for you.

Some of these things can be done on iPad, but the iPad version of CapCut is different than the desktop version so the features aren’t the same. Midjourney can be used on iPad though, and many of these other tools.

No need to apologize! That’s a great question. There was no budget, unless you count the subscription to a few services like After Effects, and a few tools we already had like Element 3D, this entire project was made for free in a few weeks by a single person.

We’re using VFX assets like smoke, fog, etc, and just compositing them into the shot. You can make something like a ship contrail by using a meteor VFX asset for instance. You just drop it into your shot, change the color of the smoke with the ‘Tint’ effect to whatever color you want it to be, then composite in your ship or aircraft on a layer above the meteor, and keyframe it moving at the same rate and speed the meteor moves in the VFX asset. That’s an easy trick we do!

We’re more interested in real things, like being creative, experimenting with new tools and ways of doing things, and bringing our dreams to life by making the best work we can with everything at our disposal. @@DizajnirajProfit That's a presumption of yours, however the truth is that it is already replacing human art. The problem with these tools lies in the fact that they scrape the internet for images created by humans to train their models on and are gaining in popularity -fast-. Wide adoption of these tools is cost and labour effective, thus virtually inevitable, resulting in less original art of human origin available on the internet and causing the next iteration of such a model to train on images generated largely by itself. This leads to increasingly lower quality art, that doesn't progress in terms of creativity and originality. Will human art then finally be reintroduced into society when AI generated art has muddled the pool but as a niche? Possible, but in the long run with massive job losses initially, and since AI poses real existential threats, we should be asking ourselves the question if there will be a humanity left to enjoy art at all. #NoGenerativeAI #AIDangers #StayAwake #SayNoToArtificialIntelligence

If I have a script that has two unique actors, is there any way to maintain these same actors throughout the movie, as I continue create new and different prompts for each scene?

Yes, there is. There's a bunch of different methods like using some of Runway, Pika Labs, or Dalle-3's new tools for AI video, creating consistent characters by using image-to-image in Midjourney, and some other tricks, but it would basically require its own whole tutorial to explain. Haha. It's definitely doable though. Just search whatever you're looking for, and add "consistent characters" and you should find some good tutorials that show you how to do it. You can even use. something like InSwapper in Midjourney to make sure your characters always have the exact same face. It's pretty rad. Hope that helps!

Appreciate it! We used After Effects as well to design some of the shots, but many of the shots were put together entirely inside CapCut, and the whole thing was edited in CapCut on Desktop as well.

@@SohaibSaidi-G For the contrails we just use a meteor VFX asset, and then put the spaceship above the actual meteor so just the trail of it shows behind the spaceship. We add the ship in Element 3D, and then just animate its movement with keyframes. Hope that helps, but let us know if you have anymore questions!

For the sound mixing we either do it straight in Adobe Premiere Pro (which we use to edit), or in GarageBand which you can see when we’re doing the narration. GarageBand comes standard with all Mac products. Any DAW will work though. As for animating that other spaceships, etc. we use Element 3D inside Adobe After Effects. There are lots of great tutorials on that, but we’ll probably make some as well to go more in depth about our 3D animating process.

@@FILMCRUX Biggest thing, I think, would be to know how you created the motion for the starfighters in various scenes, such as at the :40 second mark in the trailer or the :53 second mark here on the "How We Made This" video. You created a great sense of speed, and that's the main thing I'd personally be interested in learning how you did it. Also, is there a specific sound library you used for the sound design? You did an excellent job.

We’re actually going to do an entire tutorial in the future on how we do our space scenes, especially for animating and compositing spaceships, but basically we use Element 3D inside Adobe After Effects. We just import the 3D model spaceship into Element 3D, animate its movement with keyframes, and make sure to turn on motion blur. We also animate the camera movement separately to add that additional since of kinetic energy and velocity. We then add any other elements into the shot, typically from our SOL Space VFX Packs, and just select the 3D layer on them to make them 3D. We then just move them around in the scene where we want them. As for the sound design library we use, we use a few sounds we’ve collected from random places, but the majority of all our sound design comes from our SINGULARITY Cinematic Sound Effects Library which you can get here: www.filmcrux.com/store/p/singularity Hope that helps, but if you have any other questions, let us know, and make something amazing with it!

Thank you so much! We actually used asteroid VFX assets, put them on a layer beneath the ship 3D models, and then color graded them to be white rather than smoky black! There’s actually very few jet trails available out there so we had to get creative. Haha. We should probably make some, or get our friends at ActionVFX to.

There are techniques to get consistent characters, and there are even tools like Runway and soon Sora that will allow for consistent characters right in video generations. Midjourney is working on methods for this as well as we speak, so search “consistent characters Midjourney” on KZfaq and you’ll see lots of different methods, including what works best for that at the moment.

This guys knows definitely what he is doing. I'd assume he's already an artist with a lot of practice. But unfortunately a lot of people think everyone can create an AI Hollywood trailer within a day, without understanding that stuff isn't just easy but it is a whole process to learn them and integrate it into your own workflow. And for sure people don't want to pay more then a pocken money because "AI" is doing everything. However... Thank you so much for this video and giving us this knowledge 😀

Yeah its a little weird to say capcut a lot when wide angle estableshing shots for example are the only zoom in shots you wont see parralax in. So the shots are choosen specifically for it to be doable in capcut and marketed that way. It is not that you can just make whatever you envision. However it is easier than ever to make anything.

How did you “normalize” the audio from CapCut to KZfaq export? Any tips related to audio when exporting? I recently edited and exported a video on CapCut and the audio had a lot of high “tint” I guess you could call it. Thanks this looked awesome and my main takeaway actually was the storyboard gonna try that next.

Thanks for the kind words! Storyboarding, previs and animatics really changed the game for us. The audio was actually already perfect when we brought it into CapCut, so we didn’t have to do anything with it. CapCut does have some great audio tools built in though. If you have a lot of the high frequency range in your audio, just add something like a 10-band compressor, and bring the high frequencies down a bit. That should do it. We create music scores professionally, and we also sell packs of them in the FILM CRUX Store called OCTIVE Cinematic Music Libraries. The sound effects we created ourselves as well. They’re from our SINGULARITY and IMMERSION packs also in the FILM CRUX Store, and some of the sound effects are also from Splice. As we said for the moving elements, we just took elements like smoke, fog, and other elements and composited them into the shot. We have some other videos already on how we do are space VFX, and we’ll probably make some other compositing and VFX-specific tutorials in the future though as well.

Thank you so much for the kind words! That’s great to hear. Glad you liked it. It’s not hard at all to learn how to use Photoshop Generative Fill. For that image of the lake and the moon reflection, I literally just took the Midhourney image I created, and opened it in Photoshop. I then selected the area of the image with the lake, typed in the prompt on the Generative Fill toolbar, and pressed ‘Generate’. It will then generate three options for you that you can choose from. Or, you can just generate again until you get the one you want. Hope that helps, but if you have anymore questions, just let me know! - Lion
