Sheep farming is more intense than it appears on the surface. You are great to be able to keep up with everything.

I just saw this (years later). I am all over this kind of information being an angora rabbit raiser for a long time. I needed good hay and pellets for the mums and then for the weaning babies. This video was so real and true … if we don’t feed our animals those top grains, etc.. then the over results might not make us too happy. Having a mum with good condition after raising a litter, it’s so important. It can effect their wool production. Thank you for posting this.

I really love how you share the internal workings of sheep farming. Who new there was so much science behind shepherding. WOW you’re awesome Sandi, I have sooooo much respect for you and what you do.🥰

Sandi, you explained the complexity of a sheep’s feed rationing so well. I never imagined that it could be so complex. Like you said, I think your sheep eat better ( or at least more balanced ) then me! 👍👍👍❤️🐑🌾🌾🌾🌾

Very interesting and informative. I have read that a lamb gains approximately 70% of its weight during the last month before birth. From what I understood about what you explained, this coincides with how you feed the mom the last 4-6 weeks of pregnancy.

Great points! Nutrition is our #1, I don't know where we'd be without out nutritionists/ feed testing. I'll add that if they eat less in summer need to maybe make ration more dense so they still get the same nutrients.
excellent! Tfs and please stay safe and sending hugs to you and yours 💜🙏🤗 and it really is great to have people helping you to succeed !

I find your videos give real practical information. Thank you for that. I have a few questions. Is it different raising fiber sheep? Is the market good for you in Ontario for meat sheep? I am researching to do some fiber and meat sheep as well as a bit of fiber, meat and milk goats. Nothing as big as you to start with. Maybe four or five of each to start with for experience. Do you know of any breeders for Merino and Finn sheep? I'm also looking for goat breeders like Angora, La Mancha or Oberhasli and Spanish goats. I live in Quebec. I'd love you hear your feedback.

I have 200 polypay ewes, i feed free choice good hay and 5lbs of corn silage. They milk great and the lambs and ewes full of energy. THIS fall will be following up with triticale to chopp for silage as a cover crop. Have you considered corn silage?
@SandiBrock6 жыл бұрын
Yes. We feed corn silage as part of our ration. Last year however, we grew rye to use as green feed and ran out of room on our pad for another ag bag. Silage will be grown again this year.

Hello again Sandi.. Is it possible for you to share your ration for ewes and for sheep you sell for slaughter? How do you feed your new born lambs? Do you start using grains right after birth to make their rumen used to it as early as possible? Thank you..
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
Newborns get feed introduced at about 10-14 days old. The ration for the ewes changes depending on their life stage. Lactation, flush/late gestation, maintenance and ewe lambs all have their own ration. I can make a video on how those are developed.
@erkerk46405 жыл бұрын
Sandi Brock thank you :) after few days, I saw in one of your videos the sheet which has all rations :)

also if you know where i can purchase a few of these plastic with the holes in so that the goats & sheeps droppings would fall thru, pls let me know. the holes/ spacing in the plastic is about 3/8 to a 1/2". I see a company that sell them on youtube here but they are in Australia.

Do you ever have pregancy disease. If not how do you prevent it in ewes that have 4 or 5+ lambs.
@SandiBrock5 жыл бұрын
I had quite a few go down this last lambing group acually... I talk about this a wee little bit in my next video, but I always have to check my notes with my vet... Glucol orally, and calcium SQ... but for dosage and actual products, I would talk to your vet... But prevention by changing the ration is key...

Do you plant a special hay crop?
@SandiBrock6 жыл бұрын
Hey Eddie... I think what we originally planted was a 60:40 alfalfa:grass mix. I can't remember what exact grasses were in the mix. This year is our re-establishment year, likely plant the same again. Made really nice, consistent feed.

Your calculations are very similar to what I do as an artist pricing out projects. You gotta know the total costs of not just the materials, but time. Your time. Otherwise you'll go broke very quickly. Lol I do not like the business aspect, but it's a necessary evil.

hi, I have about 4 Dozen sheeps and i would love to improve on their feed, vitamins, and meds. The farm is in jamaica the caribbean. they stay in an open barn. I have to buy everything. i used to have a guy that carry then out to graze in the farms but they kill him and stole over 70 goats and about 8 sheeps. also i want to know for your lamming feed gate you have in one of your blog, how wide apart is the bars and how tall. rash an is very expensive in jamaica. what is your take on feeding them corn, in jamaica they said its bad to give them corn everyday, mix with grains. how do you mix your feed. I would love your feed back. thanks
@SandiBrock6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Wow... I'm not sure what to say! I'm so sorry to hear about your feed guy! We take for granted our personal safety here in Canada... As for your feed, is there any feed nutritionists around that could balance a ration with the feed that you buy? Even just having the proper vitamins and minerals will help immensely. If they sell you feed, they should be able to provide you with information (at least they do up here...) I feed a total mixed ration (TMR) of haylage, dry corn, soybean meal (to the nursing ewes), and mineral. I often feed corn silage as well in this mix. As for the lambs, when they are with mom, they get a prepared pellet that I get delivered in. The finishing lambs get an 80:20 mix of dry whole corn and 39% supplement (that has a premix of minerals in it). The lambing gate has different holes to make it adjustable... So as the lamb gets bigger, you can widen out the space... I'm not sure of actual measurement, but I will try to remember to do that at barn!
