Today I ran my newly weaned lambs over the scale to get the much needed info for some ewe culling decisions. This vlog will discuss what things I base my culling criteria on.

Another great explanation, this time about how you decide to cull any ewes. You know you can’t keep them all forever. 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🐑🐑🐑

Sandi. You are right on data is power showing the direction that you have to move toward. Yes data will show which ewe's to keep or ship. Data threads will show the best breads that gives the best performance. Genetics is a very important part of the equation, the proof is the deliveables. Note: back to the base equation (R O I) Return On Investment, I am sure Mark uses this same base R O I when he checks his grain and hay harvest returns. Please Take Care of Your Self be safe around all Farm Equipment.

I think you would be better able to judge the performance weights in the lambs if you measured the age in Days instead of months and then figured a weight per day of age as a measuring guide. You have to be able to compare apples to apples to get the right data to actually compare them. First you need to compare twins to twins and singles to singles etc. Compare along breed lines as well as by sex. Once you have that data organized you can compare other traits like one breeding over another etc.. In the example you pointed out the 73 pound lamb born 12/9. He was 9 weeks 3 days old (66 days) while the 46 pound lamb (6 up on the list) born 12/25 was only 7 weeks and 1 day old (50 days) . They are both twins, both rams and both the same breed so now you have an accurate scale to rate them on. The 73 pounder was 1.10 pounds per day old and the little one was only .92 pounds per day old. Further up the list you have a twin ram born on 12/3 that weighs 55 pounds. He looks better than the 46 pounder at first glance, until you use the pounds per day scale. He comes out at only .76 pounds per day, while the 46 pounder is at .92 pounds per day. By rating them in this way you can select prime ewes that produce large quick growing lambs by simply adding all her surviving lambs pounds per day numbers and giving her a score.

True! As a matter of fact I have a strong feeling the proposed calculation is already in her Gallagher system. A table with factors for correcting for twins, triples etc. exits and enables comparing regardless littersize. Your "score" may be called EBV or breeding value!

This is great advice , I hope she is able to see it because it makes sense. Maybe this is more information than what she wants but hopefully her program already has the formulas to make the calculations.

If you base culling ewes partially on their lambs’ weaning weight, I assume you also compare this weight to birth weight. A tiny lamb will have almost no chance of competing with a bigger lamb with a much higher birth weight. With no other negative factors for the two mothers, would you rate a ewe whose single lamb had a 1.15 pounds per day gain over one who had triplets who ranged from .70 to .85 pounds per day? Which ewe, in the long run, could benefit you more?

As someone with OCD, I'm not sure if I could be a sheep farmer. It would stress me out. Lots of data- lots of decision making. Anyway, thanks for sharing, I don't have any history of farming, really, but find it very interesting. It looks like very hard work!

if u tagged the lambs at birth/when you dock their tail.... (it’s morbid but necessary topic) you could add a column in excel for death date just like birth date (it might not be that simple but idk never worked with a sorting system just know excel) or maybe have current age in system and it stops tracking when lambs die (just brainstorming)

You bet! I actually added this to my Gallagher reports that I export into Excel. Best thing I did! So much nicer when evaluating mom at weaning time...
@kaitmiller3242

Could you put their death date in the column next to the ‘status’ column? Would you have to do it manually or does the Gallagher automatically plug in the numbers for you?

in the row at the top where your tabs are if you right click with the mouse you will find the option to create another column or row, also in your list of options at the top of the excel program there should be an option to "insert" which is the same thing. hope this helps and keep up the good work!!!

Under your breed column you have listed "olib cross" I'm assuming it's an acronym of some sort ? "O" for Ontario maybe? I've come across it from time to time.

@@SandiBrock I can't imagine. I help with a friends small, pasture raised flock. Mixed fiber and meat. I had surprisingly little difficulty (not to say no difficulty) with bottle feeding the lambs and then stocking my freezer later in the year. But, I didn't have to do it myself. Don't think I could. But if they were in pain, there is no other humane choice.

Thanks John. And I appreciate what you are doing also... Saving sheep from neglect is admirable also... I wish I could keep them all, but alas, wouldn't be financially able to farm. I guess at the end of the day, I know they've lived a very comfortable life and been cared for from the moment they were born. But you're right, the day they leave is always the hardest.

So you don't feel guilt sending them to their death after living a so called comfortable life? Sorry but that's just cold, you have to be cold to do this. 😔

Rekane 97 that's enough. Cut the crap. Go be a vegan somewhere else. You have no idea what farmers go through to humanely, successfully, raise happy, healthy animals. it's a lot of work and it's expensive, time consuming, and sometimes it's heartbreaking but we still do it because we love the life.

Rekane 97 The moment you added insults you only exposed yourself as an intolerant person who is wholly incapable to understand we’re *ALL* different. If you want to be an advocate for animal welfare then go and do it with God’s Blessing. However, you owe this hard working, dedicated lady an apology...doubt it’ll happen but you never know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@maryvee61 the way I see it, is a farmer sacrifices his/ her life keeping the animals safe, fed and protected. The animal then sacrifices its life for the farmer. In the wild more animals would die, at birth, from injuries, ect and they would be stressed more often because of predator attacks.

Do ram lambs tend to be heavier than ewe lambs? And does that impact cull decisions?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 6 жыл бұрын
I find they do end up getting heavier, quicker. But more after I wean than before... This is a good question though... I'm going to review this.
@derekpratt2554

They almost always are. There are certain indexing tables (do not recall exactly where to find it) that allow you to adjust for the sex, age of dam, and type of birth (single, twin, etc.) which allows you to compare them on a baseline. they're usually based off adjusted 90 day weights so in theory it's a 100 point baseline but with smaller breeds you won't usually have 90-100 pounders @ 90 days so you would need to develop your own baseline.

I am always bewildered how anyone makes money weaning lambs at at 60 pounds. Ewe only works for for 60 days??? Like your vids though.
@SandiBrock

I think in doing this, I'm hoping she will lamb again that same year. So the group I'm lambing now will be weaned in May, bred back in July, to lamb in December. So she will be working 120 days a year. (thats the plan, but not always what happens;))

It's more profitable to wean the lambs and feed them than to have to feed the ewes.
