I'm in Spokane, and it's been Crazy here to with the weather...very wet and cold. I tried something new (which was more of an accident), I covered my beds with greenhouse rigid plastic to help warm the soil and keep it from freezing. Worked Beautifully I also used door screen to minimize the harsh down pour from the rain we've been getting. Plants still get watered, but Don't get hammered. My pole beans, snow peas, cuc's, winter squash, carrots are doing Amazing. The door screen also helps keep the majority of the maple "whurly-jigs" out of the beds. I used hog Fencing (not panels), to make arches to put over the beds. This was done primarily to keep my pup from digging, but it turned out to be a great way to lay the screen and rigid greenhouse plastic on too. I use bungees to hold everything in place.

Also in Washington State, I'm relieved to hear that I'm not alone in the stunted plant department. This is a new garden for me this year in a new (Skagit) county, so didn't know what to expect. I have a feeling in several weeks everything will be growing like wildfire and I'll laugh at my current fears of having no garden this year. Thanks for sharing your challenges and successes with us!

I had gotten cold crops seeded and potatoes in but then all heck broke loose and here in SW Montana!! We have completely flooded! We have had mudslides taking barns and garden areas out and then it SNOWED last night! By Friday its going to be 90! Many ranches and farms are flooded out, all of Yellowstone National Park is closed, entire towns near us have lost all their water supplies.... well, lets just say that any of you that can offer up some extra prayers? We certainly would be grateful. Not only is this going to cause homeowner gardens to be impacted by large farms and ranches are hit too. Our ranch has cattle and pigs and they have struggled with these drastic temperature changes all winter and now into spring too. Montana is going to really get hurt financially with tourists not coming into Yellowstone. Thanks for teaching all of us the helpful tips Melissa cuz we are all going to need the extra help!

I've had the same issues with potting soil this year, but thankfully I saw someone's video, who suggested that you take some hardware cloth and basically "strain" the soil, to get the large mulch pieces out of it, so I ended up doing that. It was a pain, and very time-consuming, but at least the seeds were able to make it through with no problems. After "straining" 10 30-lb bags of soil, I didn't want to see anymore for awhile. ;)

Interesting that you say it was bad potting soil that caused stunted starts... I was baffled at all the teeny tiny plants that came along and was thinking the problem was the seeds I bought. It happened in 2021 and again this year, so now I’m guessing both were culprits! Weird though to have all these are doll-sized vegetables! Need to start seed saving!! Thanks for all your great advice!!

Snohomish County just south of Everett. We are a mucky mess with added challenge of mostly shade on our previous raised beds. We really stopped gardening for a few years after we discovered we brought wireworm in with a manure based local compost. They have spread out everywhere from where we had put the compost. We are going to try portable beds in our lumber yard area that has better sun, should be wireworm free. But, it is so cold and rained so hard, it actually snapped off a tomato start in a pot. I called Krueger Pepper Gardens in Wapato yesterday to ask about their harvest dates and also beef they they raise. Kimberley said that they are still finishing getting their peppers and tomatoes in the ground due to the cold war weather. In Yakima!

I’m in central Louisiana & built new gardens after moving. It seems excruciatingly slow progress compared to previous years & decades gardening closer to the coast. I guess I’m being taught patience also. The bugs are all different as is the level of full sun. Seeds don’t seem as enthusiastic as in other years. It’s comforting to hear I’m not alone. Hopefully all our gardens will explode fruitfully soon! More prayers in the garden needed for me.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am in East Texas. Im pretty much your neighbor with the bugs and the heat. If you have a green house or even a garage where you can put up a grow light. Try starting your plants indoors so you can put them out as soon as possible when the weather breaks. Im even starting squash and cucumbers in seed starters to get a jump on the heat and bugs.

I too live in the PNW and am tired of the rain and cold weather. I have raised beds and that has really helped warm up the soil. I also have a small area of inground soil and the seeds and plants I've planted there are struggling compared to the raised beds. I have one raised bed that has a greenhouse covering over it and the plants in there are doing great. One thing that is growing great here with this cold wet weather is grass!

I hadn't even thought about it being the potting soil! My tomato and pepper plants were SO small this year. I bought seeds from the same place as always, started them the same time, everything the same as every other year. Glad to know it isn't just me. A friend said maybe I was imagining things being so far behind last year, so I showed him the pictures, videos and journals from last year. I had pictures to show him with dates of things I'd already harvested at this point last year. Not a thing other than strawberries and herbs so far this year. Fortunately, most of those are perennials so they are doing fantastic.

So all my plants that usually shrivel up and die from the unrelenting heat by August, are already dieing. I hope your starts just take off now that you're warming up and will u please send some of that cool weather down here!! 😬😉

Good to know it was the potting soil (I even bought the premium kind!) as my seedlings have been extra puny this year. They are doing much better in my garden beds. Hello Melissa K. Norris. So glad you're speeding up the growing season. Got my taters in the bucket, stockpiled from last year. My favorite method of maintaining a sustainable pantry and stockpiling items long term for the whole family and the family dog and the family cat is what I consider to be the most practical, utilizing every type of food storage methods and technology available, both old and new. . Except for the fruits and vegetables that get canned, I keep perishable items like meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products in the refrigerator on a short term basis until I'm ready to use them for a big family meal - and for even longer term sustainable storage, a large separate freezer, which can store a half side of beef with plenty of room left over for homemade ice cream etc. . I'm considering upgrading to a walk-in freezer at some point.in the near future, if my plans to open a bed and breakfast come to fruition. Sometimes, however a nice round of cheese can do well for quite awhile on a pantry shelf at room temperature - and doesn't mind even if it has to stand there alone.😁 Store bought canned goods get shelves.in the large pantry closet - several for canned meat like corned beef hash, spam and sandwich spread and another for canned vegetables Bread, rolls, grains, homemade pasta, cereals and the like are stored in special humidity controlled bins I order from Amazon Prime - which usually get delivered to my doorstep about an hour after I order them. . Stuff from the family garden and orchard, like onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, pumpkins, carrots, corn celery,, potatoes and yams, cherries, blueberries and strawberries get canned in Mason Jars and stored in the cool, root cellar of this wonderful rambling former farmhouse (circa 1867) I share with my extended blended family and several rambunctious dogs raised on table scraps from the some of the finest food from a plethora of sources both commercial and home based. . There's even a special separate "summer kitchen" which I converted to store butter and ice cream churns, pots, pans, utensils, extra storage containers, foil, bags, cutlery, and other meal related accoutrement. Out back in the woods, just beyond the big pile of wood I maintain all year, (for use in an antique woodstove I keep on hand, in case the power goes out) there's even an old rusting vintage still where my great grandfather made some of the finest corn whiskey for miles. Next to it is the rusting hulk of the Ford Model A he used to transport that powerful hootch by the light of the moon on soft summer nights to his eager customers in a tri-county area. Further into this verdant forest of mostly sycamore, oak, pine and scrub, runs a cool stream into which I occasionally cast a rod or net to catch some Brook Trout, Bluntnose Shiners, or whatever takes the bait (just earthworms for the most part). And yes, hunting season means wild turkey, deer, and even an occasional wild boar. Next week, I'm planning on filing for a permit to 3-D print a smokehouse in order to be able to create gourmet artisan handcrafted, beef, bacon, turkey, and beef stick jerky, which interested local merchants can private label for other people to share with their families and their family dogs. Unfortunately, i had to break the bad news to my free range hens today that due to expected egg shortages regretfully numbered are their days of laying a couple of eggs and then basically taking the rest of the day off with ranging privileges' within the parameters of a few very nice rural acres - parts of which are rich with fat grubworms. There's even a short dirt road between the main barn and the farmhouse which they're free to cross to get to the other side as often as they'd like. My rooster Ben overheard me and he ain't too happy either, knowing full well that due to oncoming egg shortages, he'll be "workin' overtime to make sure there's plenty of eggs for me an the family.

In south sound here. Was definitely a challenge for my seed starts this year…brrrr. This is my 2d year of trellised cukes. Most assuredly it helps for pests. First year I’ve used 20 gallon fabric pots for tomatoes and WOW I’m impressed. The difference tween the bags and those I planted in my raised beds is a world of growth difference. They are tied to cattle panels suspended above the bags. I do believe the oxygen that reaches the roots in the bags vs in beds or the ground is the difference in growth. My potatoes are doing fabulous and I’ve already hilled them once. I leave my potatoes in the ground all winter as well, just like my carrots…covered in 6” of straw….perfection.

Our tomatoes and peppers are in a rowhouse and doing well. Some of our potato plants are flowering now. I think they’re one of the few plants that like all the rain and cool weather! I not only found tomato starts that were San Marzano, I only paid $1.99 per 6 pack for them and got 2 bonus tomato plants. There are potting soil issues. I bought the best potting soil in our area, Schultz Moisture Plus, and I was so unhappy with it. I still had 2 bags of Master Gardener potting soil from last season, thank God, because it has been my saving grace with the garden. The Schultz Moisture Plus was molded, had huge stick pieces, smelled like there was pig waste shoved into it, and just altogether has been horrible. The soil was gray with white fuzz all over it. I amended it with bags of coconut coir, vermiculite, perlite, and other nutrients just to get it to pull on out of the funk and make it worth my while. Still, not happy with it. It was $12 per bag or more, which is waaaaay more than I normally pay for potting soil. To me, it looked like the potting soil was rushed, not broken down enough, and sometimes still hot.

Same here. I bought "organic" miracle grow soil for some new no dig gardens. Everything is either stunted (store bought plants), new seeds either didn't germinate or just stopped growing, and leaf drop. I've heard from multiple places that a bunch of soil companies have contaminated soil (grazon, a herbicide.) Why not? It seems like the year to destroy food on all levels.

Slugs and snails I pick out daily but the night creatures I can’t keep off. Rain washes away anything I put on them. I did buy starts as well for some plants. It’s been a tough season so far. Rhubarb seems to be missing the sun. Potatoes, sweet potatoes , peas are handling the weather fairly well. Tomatoes under cover help keep blight away. I trim off what gets diseased right away. Carrots and cabbage from last year are currently seeding.

Thanks for sharing this, I feel a little better about the state of my garden. I'm in the valley (Willamette Valley) and I was really starting to wonder if I should just pull all the cold crops and feed the leaves to the chickens so I can re-use the beds for something else. I'll leave them for a bit longer. My romanesco is doing the same as your broccoli, just tiny heads and then starting to bolt. Im not convinced the cabbages will fully form and my yellow wax beans and purple pole beans look terrible. I actually had to replant the beans, the whole first planting just rotted and never germinated because it was too cold and too wet. I'm really bummed with this weather this year. I'm trying to grow enough to preserve for several crops this year, and I'm not sure I'll get enough of anything for that. Except potatoes, ironically, now that I'm eating low carb. I did potatoes in grow bags this year and they're the only crop that is really thriving right now. Well, actually, the swiss chard is doing great too.

My mom heard from a gal that possibly their has been some chemicals found in potting soil (Not sure if that’s true, but good to be aware)💁🏻‍♀️ So discouraging! This has been a very strange year. Had problems with what I think is cut worms, and I believe it’s because it’s been so cold, that everything is stunted, and the bugs had a chance to nibble😅 the Lord is in control though!

Also in wa state about 30 miles north of Seattle, I actually seeded things in my greenhouse I don't normally seed first so I could kind of be where I should be but fingers crossed...........only finally put out my tomatoes this week about to put in most of my other crops after this hot spell to help the soil warm up slightly......also slugs have been a bane in my exsistence last month and the beginning of this month and have decimated what I have had out even with prevention measures, heavily relying on the certain bird species I feed outside to help me out slightly

Yup...very validating. I live marysville Washington and have struggled for months with the help of a true green house. I don't have a heater in my Greenhouse so the temperature keeps dropping in the 50s at night. Sow my seed starts are pathetic. I've also battling slugs.everywhere. I will definitely check out your video on storing potatoes in the ground. I did that one year. And they all turned to Mush because we got too much rain. And I got a black heart rot in my potato so I've never stored them in the ground ever again. So curious do you cover them so that they don't get any rain on them when you're storing them in the ground?

Like so many others have commented, thanks for sharing about the soil. I make my own for seed starting but I filled a Greenatalks with bought soil and I thought it was the seeds, which I've replanted 3 times now, or that I was doing something wrong with the Greenatalks, but now I'm thinking it's the soil.

I am in the northeast. A few years ago I startedmaking my own potting soil. The results were amazing and it was quite a bit cheaper. This year I ran out and had to buy some to finish up. I don't know what is going on but it was awful! Ended up making another smaller batch of my own and dumped the store bought in a bin. I'm thinking about adding it to the mulch pile, we have a few, to use around the decorative shrubs. Don't want to take the chance on flowers or food.

Have never heard of making potting soil. How?
@colliecoform4854
@colliecoform4854 2 жыл бұрын
@@susanhenley8240 I use a out one third peat moss or coco coir, one third top soil and one third compost or Black Cow. I also add some perlite and then amend with some bone meal, blood meal and Azomite. I will also add some rock phophate to the mix if I have it. It hives a nice, fine mix no wood chunks and all the slow release fertilizer and amendments you need. Some people just use compost and peat moss/coir. There are a few recipes I have seen but I have been getting great results with mine. You can also revitalize old potting soil by adding the Azomite, blood meal and bone meal and throwing in some peat moss to fluff it up. I did dump all the old potting soil and mix with the new but it got to be to much work.

Just south of you, rainy and cold here for far too long here as well 😞 I'm new to gardening and so glad I built a greenhouse last year or doubtful I'd have anything growing at all. Two questions for you... 1) What is the name of the tomatoes you mentioned that are good for sauce? San-something? 2) How do you keep your potatoes in the ground without them rotting? Would have assumed that would happen with all the rain we get here in the PNW. Am enjoying learning from your channel, thank you so much.

Melissa, I just read that podcast page. Here's my take: If ALL the potting soil is effected, every brand, every product, across the board, then is it possible that our just-in-time delivery system problems may be the culprit, here? This year and last year we saw major difficulties with ports log-jammed and shipping containers going nowhere and products not arriving at stores, which, in turn, saw empty warehouses and empty shelves... so, what if this happened with potting soil? What happens to potting soil when it gets wet and sits and soaks for long periods at a time? If a truck got rained-on or a train or a major shipping vessel sat at port... that wet potting soil does... what? That's right, it goes anaerobic. The soil rots. Any and all nutrients in that soil gets consumed by the bacteria or fungi that thrive in that anaerobic environment. Right? And what happens when you plant seeds in that soil? Here's another possibility: Sea water. All those shipping containers stacked on container ships at sea, waiting at port. If there was any heavy weather, causing storms at sea, with huge waves crashing all over the containers... (I don't know how likely this is.) In centuries past, when warring tribes conquered their enemies, part of their domination of the Enemy was... salting the fields. So... what does soaking in sea-water do to potting-soil? This is ALL speculation on my part. I'm presenting my ideas to you, so I can get your thoughts and opinions on them. So, what do you think?

Kellogg's brand is made in the US so not sure about the sea water but for any imported brands the wet bags makes a lot of sense

What direction do you put your tunnels? Are the ends of the tunnel facing E/W or N/S . I was thinking E/W would be best but some one told me N/S. So now I'm not sure.🤔
@breannahorton
@breannahorton 2 жыл бұрын
It depends a lot on where you are because it effects where the sun moves across the sky, if you plan on growing in the winter, how hot your summers are, and what you plan on growing. Check your location's latitude, well above 40 is recommended E/W, and well below 40 is recommended N/S. E/W is better for letting low sun angles in winter in, but N/S will warm up quicker in the morning. Similarly, E/W will keep it cooler in hot summers, N/S will mean more ventilation in hot climates, but N/S also allows better access to the sun for taller crops like trellised tomatoes. A lot just comes down to personal preferences and local weather.

You are the first person to mention that the spring temperature doesnt get warm enough to germinate until later than in the past. I am in East Texas and cucumbers, squash, watermelons and Cantaloupe could be planted about March 15. Now it is close to May when these will germinate. Do any other growers notice the soil temperature change the last 4 or 5 years?

I have a very simple pickle recipe. 3 cups water, 2 cups white vinegar, 1/4 cup kosher salt. Best sour pickle on earth. Just dissolve the water, vinegar, and salt in a cook pot and pour over the loaded jars. Boil at least 10 minutes in the water bath.. By the way, The same solution can be poured in a bowl when cool and you can drop your sliced cucumbers in them. They make excellent ice box pickles in about 3 days and keep for a couple of weeks in the close container.
