Now this is how you run retro equipment! The NY Transit Museum is an incredible organization and it's great when people like them are passionate for rich transit history. And as a Jersey City connoisseur, it warms my heart to see you do the proposal in Jersey City. The views of Lower Manhattan, especially at night, are absolutely wonderful and it's definitely one of the best spots for a transit-loving urbanist to propose. I know Calatrava's Oculus is controversial, but honestly, I think it's stunning. Whenever I walk into Grand Central Terminal, it's a breathtaking experience, and I get that same feeling walking into the Oculus. And that was the inspiration for Calatrava, he wanted to emulate Grand Central Terminal. He wanted to give a building to the community for a place like Ground Zero, a monument to the community, something that celebrates the day-to-day with the people, not to think this part of NYC is a somber place, but a place that keeps moving forward. Though unfortunately, because you took the PATH from WTC, that meant you didn't get to see the Christmas tree and menorah they put in the PATH tunnel every year on the 33rd Street line!

The summer excursions they've done to Coney Island and the Rockaways are pricey, so it's great that it doesn't cost so much to ride them during the holidays as a special treat! And yup, accessibility is a key to making a successful transit system. You can make a station look beautiful, but if it's not accessible, then it's not a perfect station! So yes, while I do appreciate retro subway cars, PCCs, and older stations, it also makes you appreciate how far we've come! The PATH is quite the interesting system. It was originally called the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad and although the NYC Subway is iconic, the PATH predates the IRT as the H&M was first planned in 1874, although it wasn't possibly to safely build a Hudson tunnel at the time so the IRT opened first in 1904. PATH's construction finally began in 1890, funding ran out, started again in 1900, and opened in 1908. Newport and Exchange Place opened in 1909, 33rd Street and Grove Street opened in 1910, Journal Square opened in 1912, Harrison and Newark Penn Station wouldn't open until the 1930s (before this it went to the PRR's Park Place in Newark which opened in 1911 and closed in 1937), and WTC wouldn't open until 1971. The PATH used to have a station called Manhattan Transfer but there were no exits as its only purpose was for people to change trains from the H&M to the PRR Main Line. Like Park Place, this closed in 1937 when the PRR and Newark agreed to create Newark Penn Station.

Congratulaions! If you love ancient loud subways you should definitely include a stop in Glasgow in your upcoming UK trup. The cars have been "modernised" after a fashion, but the system is still as loud as it was on the day it was built because of the small tunnels.

just an average commute on the MBTA red line 1500s, you cannot even hear yourself think if you are going over 30 (which is about 2% of the time though right now). The jerkiness of the acceleration you were talking about at 2:34 is also the same on the 1500s, so when you are in a slowzone, every 5 seconds the train jerks forward, then slows, and the cycle repeats. The MBTA needs to replace them, but I hope maybe they can take them out for holiday runs like the MTA does, they are so cool. Thank you for the great video Caleb! You are Kalkidan are perfect together!

I was lucky enough to ride a SMEE car originally used for the World’s Fair about a month ago for the Yankee’s Opener. Crowded and loud and uncomfortable, with lights that seldom worked. So so worth it

Best ending to a Classy Whale video yet! And also love that the Nostalgia Trains are operated at various times throughout the year, not just during the holidays, meaning these cars are surprisingly very active as they approach 100 years of service

I’ve ridden those relics. It’s amazing they still operate. Some of the thrill is hearing all the clinking and whining from the motors. You didn’t cover the conductors operating the plunger door triggers from OUTSIDE those cars. Talk about things you don’t design any more. And that was my backup spot to propose to my wife many years ago.

I rode the nostalgia train on December 23rd. I bumped into Jeremy Zorek (I’m pretty sure you know who he is). I thought it was cool how some of the people were dressed in outfits from the 1930’s. The whole experience was surreal.

First off, congratulations Anyway, as I said in the premiere chat, the group name for the R- through R9 fleet is simply “R9”, of which “Arnine” is a phonetic spelling. Also the R doesn’t stand for rolling stock, as there are “R Number” contracts that are not trains. R24 and R25 were wheel truing machines.

This is New York City ,where they operate old subway cars unlike any other city in the USA ,i wish my city could preserve some trains *sigh * base on some videos I watch ,they always run historic BMT trains between 2 avenue and idk what because I forgot ,and the ind one is between grand central 42nd street to idk what cause I forgot ,you can see all these subway cars at the New York transit museum which was the old court street stations that closed and was converted into a museum, they also sometimes but not most of the times ,a few occasions they will run historic trains to Brighton street ,and yes I memorise all the nyc lines which was kinda hard to memorise Edit : sorry I forgot about you Chicago
