Doing a tune-up of a snare drum shouldn’t be an excruciatingly long endeavor if you’ve put in the time building up experience and understanding of how the variables that you control interact with each other. Today we’re showing you a real-time demonstration of how we go about doing a full tune-up of a snare drum for any use.

Great content! I’m 44 and started learning drums two years ago. This channel has saved me thousands of dollars that marketing companies want me to spend on the “in” fashion. I’m a guitar player of 20+ years that fell into the gear trap…this piece of equipment will make my sound better. Unfortunately, that was usually not the case. I play a budget friendly Gretsch Energy 5 piece kit with a Pork Pie 14x8 snare and Sabian HHX cymbals (cymbals definitely are worth the extra investment!). When it comes to the shells, I believe it comes down to head choices and tuning. I really don’t feel or have the notion I need to purchase an expensive kit because it is endorsed by (insert any name). Thanks for making me use my ears and not my eyes!

Wow, I never knew what the little clips were for with the Puresound wires. That’s such a simple yet genius way of changing out snares!

You guys are gold. I am a string musician in addition to being a drummer. We tune, or check our tuning, on string instruments ALL THE TIME. You get good at it. When you pick up a guitar in the shop, you check for in tune. Why not be good enough at it on our drums, like a guitarist or a violinist? Yeah, you’ve got to be taught and you’ve got to practice.

Another winner from you guys. A few years ago, I noticed while putting a new set of heads on my whole kit that I was finished with the job much more quickly than I'd expected. But yeah, the more you do it, the better you get at it, and the quicker (and more enjoyable) it goes. I've never used a drill on a drum. I admire your courage. I have a speed tuner for that kind of thing, and that's as close to a power tool as my drums are going to get! Love this channel! Thanks, guys!

This is a first time ever suggesting a ruler. At first I couldn't figure out why, but when you mentioned "leveling", I realized "oh this is to keep from putting the hoop on crooked!". I've always been paranoid about it being crooked and the head indenting lop sided. I never thought of a way to ensure it's level. What a great technique!

And this is why they are already tuned and ready to rip. If drummers were like guitar players and said hold on a minute I have to tune my kit the show would be over before we are done. When i saw this title I thought it was tuning festival style. Maybe that will be a future video entitled how to tune on the fly. 😊

A really great snare side (resonant) head is the Aquarian Hi- Performance. It has areas that protect the head from the snare wires themselves and would be extremely useful when lining the head back up.

Love your channel man. I’m having a hard time tuning my tama g walnut snare (6.5 x 14) It came with 30 strand snare wire with a linear drive strainer I watched your previous video to try using less snare wires but still having an issue with the drum sounding choked or too wet. Would appreciate any help!!

Why don't you mute one head while checking the tuning of the other? I always thought that's the way to isolate the pitches at each lug point.

Is there anything in tuning the two lugs either side of the snares…tighter..?

I actually love tuning my drums, I still never trust using a drill for wood drums.

Maybe a small thing (and I like to overthink) but there wasn't any narration for on putting wires back on. I found it less of a struggle to have the throw in the on position but lefty-losey the adjustment screw several times. Then bringing the wires back up once flipped over. As I experimented more thanks to this channel I realized I was trying to keep the throw in the off position but upside down and that wasn't really working (Taking several attempts) before trying and succeeding with the above idea.

Ah, yes. We actually have a very specific methodology that we employ for dialing in the snare throw-off that will be shared in a future piece (more details on that soon!) but this video was less about instruction and more of a peek into what this process looks like for us.

I’ve never wanted to or had to tune my drums like Bonham, or Peart, or Rich, or Chambers. I tune my drums like Bill Fotiou and it has worked on every gig since 1976. I don’t and would never own a tune bot, I had an excellent couple of drum teachers who taught me how to tune drums. I own 2 6.5x14 Ludwig supras, neither is tuned like bonham or Alex Van Halen. No girl or woman has ever run up to me and said she wanted me because my snare sounds like Bonhams!

I suspect the majority of drummers in the world never make it past the "emulate your heroes" phase of development, nor do they have any desire to.

whats the setup you got there for removing the snare wires so quickly?
@SoundsLikeADrum

Just the Puresound Custom Pro wires using string on the throw off side and the included speed strap + cotter pin on the butt side.

If you always line up the head's logo with the badge, there's no need to mark the head with a Sharpie.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 2 ай бұрын
Indeed. But since this was our process for dealing with any snare (one at a shop/studio/etc) and not just one of ours, making some sort of small reference mark is a good habit to get into. Incidentally, it's often easier to align a mark with a lug than with the badge. And some drumhead logos can be deceiving when it comes to centering.

@@SoundsLikeADrum Can more or less tune by ear now but took some time - just use that to fine tune everything. It definitely helped me in the beginning to train to hear different pitches. Struggled with tuning for years, still do. Sometimes I would hear a pitch and it was like there was another pitch I could hear in my head over the top.. crazy stuff..tuning drums can be quite tricky. You guys have helped me a lot over the years. Keep up the excellent work.
