Swiftwater rescuers must complete a rigorous training course in order to be fully prepared to rescue individuals who have fallen victim to fast-moving water. The Swiftwater Safety Institute teaches rescue agencies and river guides the skills they need to save the lives of people caught in deadly currents. We traveled to Moab, Utah where the Swiftwater Safety Institute conducted a 3-day training course on the Colorado River. The course teaches the proper way to react to dangerous situations including foot entrapments and raft flips, training students on handling tools like a throw bag to help bring a casualty to shore.

I LOVED the clear way the instructors spoke not only to the students, but also to the camera. Very direct and action-oriented. You can really tell they know what they're doing!

Trapped in river stream gets almost fatal, great job by river rescuers.

It's definitely fatal. A friend of my sister when we were teens drowned by getting trapped in a flipped kayak in flood conditions. He knew the river very well, but it didn't save him. I feel so bad for those who were working so hard to save him and they basically had to watch him drown as they just couldn't get him out in time

Swift Water Rescue is one of the hardest but most rewarding and fun certifications to obtain. Granted half the time we get called the situation is rapidly evolving and/or is a flood. Flood water is no fun to swim in.

I watch this some KZfaqrs who do clean rivers, magnet fishing and recreational sports. I always wanted to learn how to be a responder and learn though, there's not that many location that I know that teaches in Nebraska. Even then I have to (re)-learn how to swim. If anyone know some good links and locations please feel free to send some to me. I also did White water rafting and I loved it. Much respect and love for those out there doing now!

Old response I know, but in the US contact FEMA and ask about volunteer SAR - they should be able to point you in the right direction as they'll know affiliated SAR/USAR etc orgs. If they're not known to FEMA, then don't use them.

The scariest thing is the drowning person's will to survive which can result in them drowning their rescuers. That's why rescuers will sometimes knock the person out to make it more manageable.

In my days on the water, we were taught to bop a floater on head with the paddle to stun them. *This was before helmets were standard. Then you haul them to shore like you would normally do with a miscarried whale calf. Then start CPR.
