How & Why to Use Anki for Medical School

This is a lecture that was given to medical students at ATSU in the Hidden Potential First Gen Club. This is a typical presentation that we give every year to first year medical students. We introduce what Anki is and why it is so effective for medical students and then go into more detail about using the AnKing Overhaul premade deck for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2.

I'd love to see a video on your take on the memorizing vs understanding topic in learning. It is certainly a false dichotomy, but I think you get where this question is coming from.

Hello I really do need your help I installed an Anki deck and I noticed when clicking on one image occlusion box it will reveal just the hidden text that I clicked on ( the other image Occlusion are still hidden until I click on them ) so I would be very happy if you show us how to do it or give me the instructions to do it by myself

Hey thanks for sharing this. I dont know how much you know about how universities besides the american ones teach, but I study medicine in austria and atm I am unsure of how I want or rather should do my anki questions. It really seems far more efficient to study with a premade deck. But, if you know more than I tell me please, I dont think there are any wellmade german decks. But using your decks also has a lot of drawbacks for me I think. (Different language, than the language I am tested in, different system etc.) So my question is, would you recommend using your Deck or making the cards by myself. I could also try to translate them everytime I unsuspend them.

Hey mate - fellow med student, but from Brazil. From my experience, pre-made decks focus heavily on step1/usmle questions (please whoever read this feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken) which are not always the most relevant points that should be taken from some subjects (on a clinical aspect). I ended up making my own cards, although I've used lots of pre-made cards as examples for my own decks.

Hey, had a question... In your opinion, how exactly should I set up cards for a type of question to which the answer is in steps ? For example: Question is: Explain the process of blabla. and the answer to that would be something like: 1. First it does this 2. Then that 3. The result is ... Something like a life cycle could also be a good example. I had a really hard time trying to make it work with a basic card, but putting all that into one answer just doesn't work. Thanks!

Uh maybe make one card for each fundamental step with diagram in the notes? Or put diagram and hide different parts.

@@AnKingMed Wow, I envy the M1's there rn! I hope they realize how good they got it. I have been unsuspending Anking cards along with my M1 lectures. It's a bit time-consuming manually unsuspending via the browser (only some overlap between board and lecture right now) but I am tagging the Anking deck with lecture tags for future generations. Hello How to add always {{c1:}} in one card i dont want cloze 2 3 4 comming in one card its hectic to go back and remove number 2 and replace to Number 1 ... can you please tell me what should i copy paste in front , back, style codeing bar of cloze... Pleased do not suggest me addon i am Mobile user i can copy pase whole coding in cloze file

If you are in Ankidroid, use toolbar and create new toolbar item by press + icon then type {{c1:: in first field "html before selection" and type }} in second field "html after selection" and use it like this: 1) press it then type the content 2) or select the text first by hold press on it and then press the item in toolbar and then it will get wrapped with c1 cloze every time you do it

i try it now it worked fine, the Item will have a number on it

You always should not use the orginal cloze item but the new one if you want c1 clozes only
