How & Why We Shear our Sheep
Last week Charlie was back to shear the next group of ewes due to lamb in December. I love shearing day, although long and hard work, the ewes look so much cleaner, brighter and lighter.
I use Instagram Stories daily in my sheep barn.
And up until now, I’ve had no problems with showing the truth behind what I do everyday.
But today…
Today INSTAGRAM BLURRED MY SHEARING VIDEOS!
At first I was like whatever…and kind of laughed about it.
But as the day progressed, I got more upset. Upset that in this world of choice and freedom of speech, they blocked mine.
My choice to raise livestock.
My choice to share a chore that is mandatory for animal welfare.
My choice to show how it is done properly.
And this scares me.
The fact they can block one entire side of a choice, a profession.
I am all about respecting people’s values and beliefs…but what about mine?
Can we not share what we are passionate about, without being bullied or blocked?

It isn't a 'city people' thing. I live in a rural area and I hear plenty of damned stupid things too. We have a poultry farm. I've heard it all at this point.

J-MOS how do they think one can shear the underbelly without sitting them on their bums? A sheep with years of wool growth is a neglected one, not a sheared one. It shows someone cares enough about that animal to take a financial loss and have it sheared. Silly people...

Some sheep farms are extremely harsh with shearing their sheep. The sheep are also sometimes put outside in the freezing cold to give birth. That's most likely what KZfaq saw.

Take a terrified terrier that needs sedation to be groomed and compare it to one of these sheep. The shearing doesn't hurt them and is just as necessary as clipping a maltese or poodle.

This- the sheep are so zen about it! It's obviously bred into them. Less stressful than watching a little dog get a trim. They get nicked a bit, but they are 100-200 lbs and need to be manipulated and stretched out. I doubt most pet owners could do this with their own dog or cat if it needed it.

Hi Sandy, my husband has been a sheep shearer since he was 15 years old. He is now 58. The amount of energy a shearer burns in an average 8 hr day of shearing is equivalent to running a full marathon. It is hilarious how sheep don't seem to recognize each other once they are shorn. Great job explaining the how and why of shearing.

@Acer Acres I am not sure what they think they would eat or wear if it were not for agriculturists as a whole. We not only provide meat and other animal products ,we also grow the lovely veggies that they nibble and the cotton and flax that their high dollar clothes are made of. So sorry for your farmers earning an honest living being harassed.

@@MrVailtown He does have strong back muscles, however he has had episodes of sciatica and a bulged disc at times. My grandfather was a shearer also. He had several fused vertebrae in his back. A couple other shearers I know have had knee replacements and arthritis in the wrists. So it is a very physically demanding profession.

This pisses me off so much. I say this as someone who is a dog groomer: If my client dogs were as chill as those sheep? I'd have a lot less to worry about with nicks and scrapes. (And nicks and scrapes happen. I get out the med glue and accident reports in preparation every time I see an old, white toy poodle on my list for the day.) Even if you WERE raising sheep for their wool, you still wouldn't want them nicked and cut, because scar tissue doesn't grow good hair/fur, if it grows it at all. Supposedly Facebook (who owns IG) has some strong connections to a certain group of ARAs that I refuse to name, and they have a long, long history of misrepresenting what happens during things like shearing. Thank you for sharing what gets done and why it's done, because education is more important than someone trying to fear-monger.

YES!!! I keep comparing what we do to dog grooming... honestly because more people can relate to that! If you have a matted up dog, you would find it inhumane to leave it. And its the exact same thing with sheep! I guess the traumatic videos of shearing done horribly has likely triggered this move. So I guess, in a way, if they also block that content at least we would be all on the same playing field.

If it was up to some animal rights activists, they’d probably eradicate many breeds of dog and sheep that don’t shed their fur naturally, since grooming them is “cruel”. Along with all exotic pets from the largest snake to the smallest frog. Before moving on to ruining pet ownership in general. And gods knows what they’d do to equestrians.

Acer Acres If your farming practices are legitimate, you should be as angry if not more than the activists. You can’t fake the videos of slaughter, shearing, and factory farming that depict atrocities. Those “farms” or cafos are ruining farming for everyone. Showing people that smaller farms and operations still have integrity and care for their animals is so important. There is a battle on the horizon though. With the movement towards plant based diets and science that clearly backs up the benefits, you will have to fight to stay in the game. In my opinion, the movement away from factory farming is a good thing for small farms that have been previous trampled on by large scale operations. With the rise of farmers markets, people pay a pretty penny for meat they feel is local and ethical.

Hi Sandi we run a merino sheep farm in Victoria Australia and your sheep look perfectly happy and well cared for to me. People need to start to realise where their products that are essential to their lifestyles come from. Humans can’t live without animals and our domesticated animals can’t live without humans. Hi Sandy. I grew up on a small grain and sheep farm. My parents sold out of farming a year after I graduated high school in '95. 20 years later my wife and i bought a small acreage so we could raise our two young boys on a farm. We made the decision to buy 50 ewes. I was excited but my wife was nervous. She didn't grow up with livestock at all. About the same time, I discovered your channel. My family and I watched all of your videos. My wife especially. For her, seeing a lady taking care of sheep gave her a lot of confidence before they arrived. Also, my boys loved seeing the lambs. Sandi, you are sharing another aspect and a job on the farm. It is the responsibility of of anyone who raises animals to ensure they are cared for properly and shearing the wool is part of that responsibility. We did not raise sheep, but there was a neighbor who had a few head and i remember visiting on occasion watching the process. The sheep are not hurt and not in discomfort. Not only do people not understand where their food comes from, they dont how their clothes get to the shelf. Great video. God Bless.

Thank you so much for explaining it! I always understood the reason behind shearing sheep, but most people don't. Growing up on a farm with many different animals some jobs need to be done for the animals health. Keep up the great work and I will be waiting for the next video! remember that one sheep that lived in a cave for 6 years? His wool was massive!! Sheep absolutely need to be sheared. The poor fella (his name was shrek) mentioned had wool weighed about 60 lbs. That's way too much on a sheep. keep on shearing!

I remember Shrek. That was a MASSIVE fleece when he was finally shorn. FYI some breeds do shed their wool, but it's MUCH more common to have to shear.

Dog groomer here! And I’ll be the first to say, I get dogs in my shop that Are so matted I have to shear them like a sheep 🤦🏼‍♀️ it’s 100% the same thing, and most definitely not offensive or hurting the animal in any way. What’s offensive is that the dog owners let their dogs get that matted!

"sensitive content" its just a haircut, the sheep are chilling or a tad annoyed, and thier baa is not really different from what they do all day anyway. And if they dont get sheared, they can die due to many, many reasons (let alone heavy kilos of wool on you must be a pain for the legs anyway)

I love how you describe Charlie's work "as a dance and not a struggle". This is true. When he knows his job so well, which he clearly does, it becomes a dance for him, all fluid movements. It was beautiful to watch him shear the sheep. I was in awe just watching him!! He does it so smoothly and calmly.

I'm a vegetarian and totally against animal cruelty, but you guys seem to be doing your best to care for your livestock and are very attentive. I don't think their lives are negatively impacted as long as you don't slaughter them

I'm planning on getting a small flock of sheep one day if I'll move to countryside, just to get some wool and create things from it - meat as well if or when I will I will breed them. It's a shame that some people just see all animal agriculture as abuse. People are humanising animals way too much - if they're well cared for and have enough space, food and socialisation, they're just fine. They don't worry about tomorrow. And if these people think all of this is bad , then they should consider pet keeping as abuse as well. Also, especially sheep farming can be very environmentally sustainable - at least where I live it is - and wool is one of the greatest fibres you can find. I prefer it over synthetic materials when possible. Of course it matters where you get it from, but there's no reason to think all sheep are miserable. I think sheep are relatively easy to keep happy.

She breeds and sells lambs up to about 4 months and then sells them to market - yes for meat. Some are kept for breeders and others sold to other farms for the same. There is no money in wool as she explained in the video. Her animals are also well cared for and loved.

I love seeing sheep being sheared. So many benefits including checking their weight. Once all the wool is gone you can actually see their body mass. And this is all natural! I love this. I love your channel.

Yes I was about to say something about the hooves.. you stopped us on time. It was great if you had another person to trim them straight after shearing. Another annoying task done same day. You are right about shearing your own sheep can cause stress. I have a fancy shearing machine in the closet for 20 years, collecting dust, only because I lost patience with my sheep, during shearing. Let a professional do it right.

The one on the right is being so gentle while shearing the sheep. You keep doing what you are doing. Those complaining are probably taking their pets weekly to be groomed. Charlie’s just awesome at his trade.

My gosh dear lady! You are a working maniac! I'm old and sickly now but even in my prime, I don't think I could have kept up with you. You are fantastic!!! I have always thought that after being sheared, the sheep feel so “good”. !!! I know when I bodyclip my horse in the spring, I think they both like getting that winter hair off instead of waiting for the whole shed out process.

I just want to say thank you for posting these videos! Even though instagram is censoring it, it's obvious to see this is such a humane practice for your sheep! It would seem almost cruel NOT to shear them, and the fact that your shearers are so skilled and quick at what they do clearly minimizes any stress the sheep would have from the handling/process. I'm not in the farm industry myself (besides owning horses), but I can see how well your sheep are taken care of, and that this is a very important part of that. Instagram censors all sorts of things with no logical reasons really, and I'll keep watching for your updates even if they're behind a "sensitive content" screen!

City people have no idea about the farming or country world... it's as ridiculous as a farmer criticising a neurologist. When I was a kid I always thought sharing sheep was the same as getting a hair cut but grown up now it does more then just getting a hair cut. The wool can be used to make clothing which I like cause using every part of a animal to me is the best and most respectful way of harvesting/keeping a animal. It keeps bugs,unwanted things off of them and as mention in this video keeps them balance.

Plant corn to feed me, but don’t pollute the air with your diesel exhaust!! Make me a wool blanket but don’t hurt the sheep!! Demonstrate against anything with signs made from PAPER & CARDBOARD, which is made from TREES!! But don’t worry about that.... Great video the guys did awesome work, you & mark are doing a great job.

Some people just don't understand that if the sheep were never sheared they would be miserable. I love your videos and I think they are very informative. If you own live stock its nice to see how others do things it can save you money and time if you learn a few tricks on birthing, shearing and other stuff like feeding routines. And if your going to wear a sweater or eat meat its nice to see that the animals are well taken care of. These are not abused animals. They are obviously well taken care of.

I could watch sheep sheering all day it's so relaxing. I wish people could educate themselves more about why sheep get sheered in the first place. They have no problem with dogs getting shaved but god forbid you do it to a sheep *shake head*. Also shout out to Charlie and his assistant sheering is tough work I tried it once and never realized what an art form it really is it takes so much practice.

Shearing time was my second favorite time with my sheep. Lambing was my first favorite. Some people just have no clue and the others are just plain st*p*d. You have the most amazing set up so envious. So living vicariously through you. Keep up the wonderful videos.

Good morning Sandi, instagram are bunch city slickers that have never put a toe on farm. Farm people get how its done and DONE the right way. We shear in the spring , but before lambs are due, we shear what we call 'tushie shear'. Everything from in front of the udder, belly, inner thigh, and bum gets sheared. It makes it easier to lamb the ewes. 6 to 8 weeks after they have lambed everybody get sheared and hooves trimmed. Then they get run through what we call 'the maze', we give them their shots, worming dredge, hoof trims. We separate our wool white from black as we sell our wool privately, by the fleece. We have huge table in the barn, that we trim out any burrs, poop ,skirt the edges then fold into thirds and roll into a tight roll. Pack the rolls into reusable bags that are sent to our buyers. If the buyer returns the bags (cotton) back to us they gets a 5%off their next purchase. Our sheep live outside with round out house to shelter in bad weather. Surprisingly they rarely use the the round out house. It has to be very bad weather before they move into the house.

I see cobs on the ground prior to combine , squirrel damage ? Would hair sheep fit your operation ? Friend raises hair sheep, only lambs once a year do to a full time job, normally sells 300 lambs per year tho. That breed work for you? Normally twins or triplets every ewe. ????????

You can’t mix hair sheep and wool sheep together though because then the wool is actually worth nothing and where I live in Australia, hair sheep are extremely dangerous for wool sheep growers because our market depends on fine wool and if hair sheep are near a flock the wool is worthless

I raise hair sheep. Wool here is worth nothing anyway and you would lose money on every fleece paying to shear them. Hair sheep are easier to raise, and more parasite resistant.

I just love watching people farm. I wish I could too but sadly I didn't grow up in a family that already did so for me it's pretty much impossible to get into at this point in my life. But I have so much respect and awe for people doing this. The stamina and committment is just amazing to watch. Hat's off

Great video Sandi. Sheep need to be shorn, and if some people dont want to see that, they have the right to turn it off. As you explained so well, shearing a sheep is for health and wellbeing purposes, not for profit. Dont let instergrams knee jerk decision knock you. I have learnt so much about sheep from you and love your content.

Hello Sandi and Sandi B. Fans! I was able to watch the instagram shearing posts and like you wondered how they could be blocked. To me, in my opinion, the sheep look like they really enjoy the "haircut." They looked relaxed and appreciative like scratching behind a dog's ear or taking off work boots after a long day. The shearing guys are amazing, so fast, so precise and like a machine! Just a "non farmer dumb city slicker's perspective." Sincerely, Dan in Bloomington, MN P.S. Love your videos! I think it’s great that you upload informational videos and give the reasons WHY you sheer + all the reasons it benefits the ewes and lambs. People need to hear that from an experienced farmer. From a fellow farm wife, you’re awesome! 👍🏼
